“excellent retreat from San Jose”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2014

I decided to stay here to get away from the city for a night. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by Ernesto and the front office staff. The courtesy and professionalism of the staff was immediately apparent. Due to arriving late we ordered room service. Even though we ordered close to the kitchen closing our food was excellent! I looking forward to returning for a longer stay.

We were picked up at the airport and wisked away to Tirol. The magical tree lined entry led to a Costa Rican Chalet. The rooms were spacious and very comfortable with a real wood fireplace and oversized tub that along with champaign and candles made for an amazing weekend with my girlfriend. The food and ambiance at the restaurant was amazing. Chef Leo is superb and the overall service was attentive and very friendly. The grounds are perfectly groom and beautiful. We enjoyed walking the grounds and it reminded us of a place out of Lord of the Rings! Simply magical! The area at 6000ft is a perfect micro climate and you should have a light jacket at night. The staff set up our activities and was friendly. They even set up a helicopter ride for us to Arenal the volcano. From wine selections and food pairings, they really seem to have their act together.
The only thing hiccup was the remote in the room needed new batteries.

Room Tip: Loved the suite!

This is truly unique hotel. I wanted a place that would be indicative of Costa Rica and I wasn't disappointed. The facility is an older hotel that is being updated by a new owner. We stayed in a chalet the first night and had an electric fireplace for heat (at 6,000 feet elevation it can be quite cool and breezy at night). We moved to a suite for the next two nights and had a wood burning fireplace for heat. Beds were excellent. The grounds are beautifly landscaped and grounds keepers did a great job keeping everything tidy. Rooms very clean.

Food in the restaurant was good. The included breakfast was outstanding. Servers Jenny and the others who took care of us.were attentive and competant. Dinner prices were very reasonable considering the food quality.

All of the staff were friendly and helpful. Karen, at the front desk was especially helpful in helping us deal with some other travel issues.

Will definitely return on our next trip.

I stayed one night with a friend and two nights by myself as a time to get away and rest. I absolutely could not have chosen a better place! It is so beautiful here with all the tall trees. It almost felt like I was on vacation somewhere in Europe. The rooms are very clean and the grounds are kept up well. Everyone here was very friendly, helpful and so accommodating. I was trying to think if there was anything that I would change or improve and I really couldnt think of anything. Can't wait to find a time to come with my husband.

The chalets were these really cute little colorful houses with a room on top and one on bottom. The grounds were beautifully kept and had beautiful gardens. The restaurant serves a complementary Costa Rican breakfast that is yummy and dinner was delicious (we all had tenderloins).

The only criticism I have is that the ceilings were a little thin so we could hear the footsteps above us but it really wasn't that bad.

I recommend it!

This was the first stop on our trip to Costa Rica and we were very pleasantly surprised! Following our GPS through the city and up the hill at night, we were sure we were lost, and then, there we were in a tropical Eden. Chalets encircle a beautiful garden amidst the forest. Room was spacious and clean. It was colder than I expected but the funny little fake fireplace/heater warmed the room up just fine. Bathroom was big and clean.

We ate our first Costa Rican dinner in the dining room with live piano music and it was delicious! My steak was perfect and service was very friendly and efficient.

We were there 2 nights before beginning our jungle/beach adventures and it was a civilized, comfortable beginning to our trip. We were traveling with our daughter so I can't say it was romantic, but if we were just a couple it most certainly would be! Every staff member we encountered was delightful. I highly recommend this hotel, it is such a departure from the somewhat gritty city.

The grounds are absolutely beautiful with flowers and fountains and a fantastic view of the volcano and mountains. The room was spacious, comfortable, and clean. We arrived late at night and it was chilly, but we couldn't light the fire in the fireplace because we had no kindling. It didn't really matter. The beds were super comfy and the shower was amazing. The receptionist Karen was extremely helpful in arranging our coffee tour in the morning. The complimentary breakfast was served restaurant style, with waited tables instead of buffet. We fell in love with this place and were sad to leave after only arranging one night there. I highly recommend this place. You can easily see how people would make a wedding there. Just beautiful!
