“Great start of Costa Rica tour.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013

Heliconia island was the first stop in our 2 weeks CR tour. We chose the spot because we did not want to drive for long on the first day (still weary after a intercontinental flight). Heliconia prooved to be a good choiche. It's great for discovering the flora and fauna and to get into the right holliday groove. It is an excellent place for birdwatching. We wandered trough te garden ourselves and went for a swim in the river. Caroline was very helpfull and told us a lot about the place. She pointed out some of the animals and birds. The garden being such a unique selling point, a standard walk through the place would add to the stay. We, family with 2 young children, stayed in the familly appartment wich is spacious enough and fairly clean. The porch is very nice overlooking the garden. The kitchen only has a micro wave oven, (Caroline let us cook in her kitchen the second night). After 2 nights we were well rested and ready to move on.

Well worth a visit, though perhaps one night rather than two would have been more appropriate. With a car easy to get to, without difficult to leave. I waited 1hr 30mins for a bus at the end of the path on the main road for a bus, which should have turend up after 10 minutes. It was pouring down with rain. The garden was beautiful, and Carolien's tour enthuiastic and informative. I learned so much about helonicas, and saw toucans, howler monkeys , sloths and a variety of birds, which came to visit at breakfat. Large, airy rooms and bathroom, very clean, but rather over priced. But a very enjoyable stay.

The property was a botanical garden and the grounds are beautiful. The unit that we were in was very nice with both hotwater and a functional air conditioner. It borders the Sarapique River and during the green season can occassionally flood. All units are raised about 5 feet above the ground. Birds abound on the property and the owners have feeders set up in the morning so you can enjoy the sight of colorful birds while having breakfast. There is no bar per se, but they have a fridge stocked with beer and soft drinks. It works on the honor system. I would recommend it especially to anyone interested in bird watching.

We did not stay here, as other reviewers have mentioned, so we cannot speak to the rooms/stay. The "island" is really a small plot of land surrounded by two rivers. The flowers and plants are beautiful, and we did spot a snake. We also heard monkeys, but we only managed to get one photo of them. Nice to walk around for about an hour, but we just looked and took pictures... we didn't really know what we were looking at... so maybe it would have been better with a tour?

I don't think that we would have wanted to stay here, as it was very isolated.

We visited for a tour, not to stay, after, a strong recommendation in our guide book.
It was rather disappointing. Carolien was away so no tours were available. We were invited to look around by ourselves, but there really was nothing to explain what we were looking at, so was rather a waste of time. To charge $12 each was far too much.
I'm sure if Carolien had been there the review would be different, but without, a disappointment.

We did not actually stay at the bed and breakfast/hotel but visited the gardens and went on a tour of the island with the owner. A prodigious display of Heliconia well displayed and excellently described by Carolien. An added bonus was the excellent variety of fauna that we were able to see on out tour. A very worthwhile place to visit.

Disappointed, that's the word that first comes to mind - now somewhat more than a month after our stay at Heliconia Island. Difficult, difficult as good second one. Difficult to write a negative review, with Carolien working so hard to keep this place running! But OK, a review is just an opinion - below depicts mine, ours .... n=1
As the title suggests, the garden is beautifull - but, unfortunately, that's about it...
The rooms/appartments - at least the one we got, was definitely the worst, but strange enough also the most expensive one of our 4-weeks Costa Rica trip. Same for food and drinks. Beautifull trails? Yes, the whole 300 meters. Excursions offered here were seriously overpriced: after two negative experiences (due to the fact we speek some Spanish we learned that we payed about 25% more than the regular prices) we did some Googling for the address of an offered river tour - just drove their (without the Heliconia Island VOUCHER - still wonder how we dared) and payed even 35% less than the Hel. Island offer ...
Then finally, after already too many days at the place, we had the courage to cancel our final night (due to the negative experiences and fact that the Island was almost flooded): not possible. Oh yes it was possible ... but then we had to pay the full amount. Not a nice treatment after a 6 day stay ...
