I was visiting Costa Rica for the first time and Hostel Pura Vida was the first hostel I had ever stayed at. A reservation was made and a $15 deposit paid online via PayPal. It was a very easy process. I didn't even have to get off of the bus from San Jose to Tamarindo to meet someone who knew where the hostel was. The location is conveniently 5 minutes walk from the center of commerce and beach.
The rooms are very clean upon arrival and cleaned daily during your stay. The shower has good pressure. The toilets run to a septic that can't handle any paper being flushed. One improvement that could be made is if the hostel provided towels for showering. I don't remember them having any towels. I bought towels in town, great souvenirs!
Right outside our room was a large outdoor covered area. This was a great communal area to hang out with other hostelers. The vibe was very fun and friendly. There were two fully equipped kitchens. Refrigerators were available to keep food. Our hosting hosteler, Marcella, is like a Lonely Planet travel book that loves you back. She will help you find any experience would like in town. She gave great recommendations on things in Tamarindo & across CR. She recommended and booked our private travel and hostel in Monte Verde. Great Wifi, great restaurant next door. I would highly recommend this hostel for any traveller.

We had a great time staying in this hostel. First 3 nights in a dorm, then 3 nights in a private room. All rooms were clean (and cleaned every day) and we had enough space. The employees are very helpfull with everything, from picking the best tours to helping us with the busride to the next town and even look for hostels there. Plus it is a nice place to hang out and meet new people. Would definetly stay there again!

Hi!

We stayed with Thomas and Marcella (awesome people from Slovakia) in hostel Pura Vida. Beautiful place, quiet spot and great setting! 2 nice and spacious kitchens, rocking chairs (love it!), friendly staff, clean rooms and a homy kind of atmosphere. We stayed 2 nights and unfortunately had to go someplace else.

They recommanded us on all kinds of stuff, we rented a surfboard there, they have great pizza right next door, hammocks, ping pong table, shuttles to pretty much anywhere in CR etc.

We had a lovely stay. Thanks again Marcella and Thomas for letting us feel right at home. Take care!

Pura vida,
an Aussie and two Dutchies...

Real pura vida way of stay. Very nice crew, clean, simple and comfortable place. The private rooms with bathroom are very good even for a family. Common areas provide nice place to be with and to make friends. Very good place.

To begin, I have stayed in countless hotels/hostels throughout my travels and never once have I had to leave a deposit for the room key.

Beware when taking multiple sets of keys since they require a deposit. Our keys (2) both snapped in the lock cylinder of the main entry gate since they were made of an extremely inexpensive, soft metal. We were forced to pay the deposit for both sets of keys (x2), and received a new set (1) that did not break for the remainder of our stay.

Take the above anecdote for what it is worth and draw your own conclusion about the property's management..

Dear Guest, we apologize for the issue with the keys unfortunately we do not control the quality of the materials of the keys and we make our keys in the local hardware store with what they have available. Needless to say upon check in you were given exact instructions on how to use the keys, after the incident of breaking the 1st key we took you to the gate to explain step by step on how to use the keys. I apologize but after the 2nd broken key there is nothing we could do to explain better, perhaps in the future I recommend to follow the instructions little better as it does not happen very often our guests break 2 keys in the row, matter of fact you were the first one. Thank you for staying in our great hostel and enjoying the array of wonderful amenities we have available for you, since the material of the key was the only complaint you had we feel the hostel was a great stay for you.
