“Great family run hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2009

Stayed here for a week in May. Stayed in a garden view room (room 2). The rooms have air con, fan and cable TV. There is no phone in the room or coffee machine but there is full wi fi access which is free. The beds were averagly comfortable (two single beds pulled together). The shower in room 2 never had any hot water but our friends in room 3 had plenty, however, Tamarindo was so hot that we didn't really need hot water. We have previously stayed in this hotel and stayed in a junior suite. There is a lot more room in the suites, a fridge and a coffee machine and they are far more private. If I stayed here again I would stay in a suite for these reasons.
The hotel owners are really good hosts and look afer you very well. The restaurant in the day cooks delicious food and at night there is a first class restaurant.
The bakery, on the premises, is addictive as the food there is delicious! If you don't have a coffee maker in your room you can get plenty of coffee in the bakery.
The location of this hotel is perfect as it's just as you enter Tamarindo, next to the esturay, and it's only a few footsteps from your hotel room into the sea! As you're on the outskirts of Tamarindo it's a lot quieter. You can walk along the beach to town or other bars.
This is a lovely, family run hotel, worth a stay.

My wife and I stayed here for five nights. It is right on the beach. You can take a free bus to the store to get some food and cold drinks. It is one of the first hotels as you get in to town. Just across form the Best Western. There is a local bus that comes to the airport that will take you out to Tamarindo. We took the bus from the airport to down town Liberia. We waited for another bus to take us to Tamarindo. The bus we got on took us back to the airport and then on to Tamarindo. So I think you can catch the bus from the airport going to Tamarindo. Very safe ride with lots of stops. I think it cost about five dollars. They take US money. The hotel was nice. The music did not bother us at all. We stayed right over the bar. We just opened our door at night and listened to the music and drink our own drinks that we got at the store. The bakery is a must. They start baking fresh stuff in the morning. You have coffee in your room so just go down stairs and get something fresh to eat and take it back to your room. My wife and I barely left our room. We just sat out on the patio and read and drank and walked on the beach. One tip pay in cash better deal. My wife works for the Airlines so we travel around the world a lot. We have stayed in many places and this was nice and relaxing. It is not top end around $85.00 US a night

  • Liked — Price was right and the location on the beach.

We travelled from Rincon de la Vieja to Liberia bus station by private transportation ($60 & ~ 1 hour) and then took public transportation to Tamarindo ($2/pp &~2 hours). It is probably more like an hour trip, but the public bus made many stops. I'd like to think we took the scenic route...

1. all private transportation arranged by Laguna del Cocdrilo (Cedric) went as planned. Tamarindo shuttle came through! ($18 to/from LIR to Tamarindo)

2. i felt cedric was very responsive to all our (last minute) adventure tour & surfing lesson requests. he wasn't there on saturday/sunday and confirming transportation was a little tricky, but managable.

3. overall, the rooms were simple, very quaint., and comfortable. it's right on the beach, north end of tamarindo. it's only a 5-10 minute walk to anywhere you want to go. we were a party of 8 staying in 4 different rooms- our only complaints would be: 1 room didn't have a working toilet, but they manually flushed it w/ no problem. 1 room didn't receive their AC controller and froze the first night, however used another room's remote the other two days. taxes are not included in the website price...so the cost was a smidge more than anticipated.

4. Ben, who manages the restaurant, rocks! the restaurant food is great and he gave us quality advice on other great restaurants and tours in town.

5. Our group did the blue dolphin catamaran (shout out to katie from oregon...) and took surfing lessons at iguana surf shop... we all went away very happy.

6. Restaurants: i felt the best food for our money was Njabba (sp?), the dragon fly, and Noguis. A little on the american cuisine side...but great food, pretty decent prices. We also ate at El coconut- i thought the food was ok, but slightly overpriced. The lady at the restaurant was very helpful in figuring out the bill when we had trouble converting our colones to dollars.

7. The cartagena canopy tour was great. Different from the rincon de la vieja tour (2 hours away...which i felt was more scenic and included rock climbing and tarzan swings), but still fun and totally worth it. the guides were very silly and entertaining. we could ride across the ziplines upside down, with our friends/spouse, and they even took (great) video and pictures of us with our own cameras!

Ok, that's all i got! Pura Vida!

  • Liked — great value...not too expensive and the hotel was in a decent spot with decent amenities
  • Disliked — i personally didn't find the lagoon very "pretty" too look at. maybe i just don't appreciate wild life as much as a should...

Spent 1 one week in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, and booked the stay for one night at Laguna Del Cocodrilo. I travelled alone so a bit cautious. I felt very safe at the hotel and was welcomed by the staff. I did not have any problems at all. The restaurante is excellent and the French Bakery is a must to go in Tamarindo. There is also one in the city center. Don't expect much in Tamarindo besides a beautiful beach, light shopping, and friendly people. It is a very laid back place. The night life was very fun and definitely going back in April, 08! Overall the hotel was a good choice and did not ahe any problems except the mosquitoes.

  • Liked — very home like
  • Disliked — it's in the beginning ot the town

We went on advise from Fodors and were pleased. Small & quaint. The front desk lady was very aimable. The room was small, but we did not spend much time in it. It's right off the main road and a direct path to the beach.

This hotel was clean, but most of the rooms were right next to
the restaurant, so it was loud at night. This hotel was also located
at the far end of Tamarindo and didn't have a pool.

Definitely don't stay in the suites- Room 11 or 12, the open air bar is directly below both rooms with speakers attached to the balconies. The chopping, plates & silverware and scooting stools noise starts at 6am in the bar area to accomodate the bakery and continues all day then really cranks up in the evening when the bar comes alive. The website also doesn't reveal there is outside seating (several tables) set up for the restaurant with lights and more outside speakers so while you sit on your balcony trying to enjoy a long awaited for and relaxing vacation instead you watch people eating dinner and get blasted with nonstop music. And thats not including the bar noise going on directly below you. Hotel guests are not the focus here, the bakery, restaurant and bar are, and the bartender told us the hotel is owned by separate people from the other businesses. We were supposed to stay for a week, managed to force ourselves to last 4 nites then checked out and went to the opposite end of the beach, Capitan Suizo's. Yep, a little more money but soooo much worth it!!! We very much enjoyed Tamarindo and the people are truly wonderful. Even Cedric at Crocodillo was nice about the situation and gave us our $ back (we don't think we were the first) for the remaining days and we will absolutely return and stay at Suizo's.

  • Liked — Nothing
  • Disliked — Everything- there truly is nothing positive to say except the people are nice. Don't stay here
