“Lovely, quiet hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013

If I came back to Tamarindo I would quite likely stay here again. The hotel is located on the edge of town, meaning that it is away from the hustle and bustle of "downtown" Tamarindo. Situated at the edge of the business district, you have proximity to all the shops, bars, and restaurants, while also enjoying a quiet retreat. The room I had was lovely - tasteful decor, impeccably clean, lovely view of the garden and ocean beyond it, hot shower. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The hotel has a French bakery in the downstairs, which serves delicious coffee. The croissants are not authentic Parisian (more dense than flakey) but delicious nonetheless. The prices here were a bit higher than I wanted to pay, but traveling alone I was willing to pay a premium for a place where I could enjoy the balcony, figuring I would have more downtime than traveling with friends. The cost is the one thing that would cause me to look elsewhere on a return trip - I suspect there are other nice accommodations that balance proximity with quiet that are more affordable.

Room Tip: It will cost more, but choose beach or garden view to enjoy the view and patio. Street side rooms ar...

I had stayed several nights across the street at the Best Western before spending my last night in Tamarindo at Laguna de Cocodrilo. I wished that I had stayed there for the entire visit. The attitude of the staff, the location right on the beach, the adorable garden patio...just wonderful. If you are a Francophile, in particular, then this is the place for you! There is a delicious patisserie connected with the hotel. My boyfriend bought chocolate there and it was some of the best chocolate I have ever eaten!

My room on the ground floor had a little patio that looked out on to the garden and the beach. It was a simple room, but very peaceful and relaxing. I loved this hotel and will definitely come back for a longer visit.

We really like it here. We were doing surf camp at the nearby Witch's Rock and they put us up here because they ran out of space at their own hotel. But it worked to our advantage as our hotel was quiet and small, away from the business of the surf camp. And it was only a 2 min walk away by foot, along the road or beach. Nice garden, with hammack and sunset view, and good food (with a French twist as the owners are French), though were only had one meal there. The only drawback to this place was that the bed was very creaky. Otherwise, great deal. Simple but clean and great location. Ideal for singles too.

Room Tip: We had one facing the beach / garden - very nice.

I stayed one night after a day trip to the beach. The proprietor and his SO are friendly and helpful. However, she speaks limited English; there were times when the owner was tied up and I had some difficulty communicating. The accommodations were appropriate for pricing. Comfy but not fancy. I liked the one bedroom with kitchenette that I stayed in. It had a balcony that faced the (busy) street, but there was enough foliage and fencing to offer moderate privacy. Yes, this place is waterfront, but does not have access to the public beach (an easy 10-15 minute walk down the main strip). I visited only a few weeks after a significant earthquake in the area, and I believe the town was still recovering. The stone tile in my room was broken and covered with a mat while awaiting repair. Also the electricity was out when I arrived (during a heavy rainfall) and did not return for several hours. I'm not sure if this is a regular occurrence during the rainy season or if it was an exceptionally heavy downpour. FYI this is on the main road in Tamarindo, but not very walkable to many restaurants or nightlife which is good or bad depending on how you look at it.

We like staying at Cocodrilo for its beach location- you can walk right down to the beach for surf at the river mouth and great views. And the French couple who own it are awesome! Nice new flat screens in the rooms too. Drawbacks? The mattress was lumpy and had permanent indents, the air conditioner made odd noises all night, the shower had drainage AND drip issues, and we didn't have a small frig in the room. The French bakery at the hotel has fresh and yummy stuff but a cup of coffee (small) with milk is $1.80 with no refills- pretty standard unfortunately. The bar and restaurant were closed at this time which was too bad. All in all, it's still a pretty good deal though in a town gone wild with tourism and excessive prices for value.

The hotel is in a great location in Tamarindo, as it is neither in the center of Tamarindo or outside.
The rooms are comfortable, very clean with fan and air conditioning, and is beachfront.
It is very safe and the owners are very friendly.
It has a delicious French bakery next door having breakfast you can eat there, as the hotel has no restaurant service.
All he needed to be complete this hotel is the pool and the restaurant, otherwise it's an excellent choice to stay in it.
The price per night is quite in accordance with the amenities offered by the hotel.

Room Tip: Choose garden view or beachfront, never street front.

Stayed for a week.
Place has it pros and cons, depending on what you are looking for.

It is secluded from the commotion of the center of tamarindo, though the rooms facing the street side still get the road noise from the cars going into/out of tamarindo.

The rooms facing the beach are great. #12 our favorite due to the decor (our friends stayed there) but the balcony does not have the view of the water like #11 does, where we stayed. #11 is a bit more used up, and the decor is not as modern as #12, but the view is right in front of the water (though the water is a good 1/4 mile away +/-).

The room sits right above the bakery's seating area, but we did not have any noise problems like some of the other reviews say. Keep in mind that the bar was not open so at night the seating area was empty like a ghost town (which was a good thing).

The room itself is comfortable yet basic. Could use some more beach decor on the walls here and there to make it more cozy, maybe a paint scheme of some sort. It just felt very plain, but the view made up for it.

The bathroom had some broken tiles on the floor, but all else was fine. The shower was ample and water pressure sufficient. The hot water took a little while to figure out but once figured, it could get really hot if needed. We took mostly cool showers anyways.

Water in tamarindo appears to be well controlled and had no issues with getting sick.
Room had a little refrigerator and a coffee maker.

The cleaning staff was very friendly and very thorough, leaving the place impecable each time.
The towels are quite old, but it happens to be that is how my wife likes them as she says they dry the best that way.

The AC was sufficiently cold and we had it on minimum at 25C during the night. we also had the ceiling fan running. We could not leave the balcony door open because there are no screens, so insects would get in. Also, at around 4-5, you can smell the bakery goods being baked, but one early morning they were burning trash and the wind was blowing the smoke towards our balcony, so that morning I kept the door closed and had no bakery smells :-(

Staff is very friendly and very accommodating. The place is family owned. Has parking outside. Walk right to the beach from the back. Secluded on the sides. Excellent breakfast. We did not try the lunch menu because we were always out, but by the looks of it, it looked just as good as the pastries.

Overall great value, quiet (bar was not running), and clean. Friendly staff.
