“Great Stay for Groups”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2010

Luna Llena was a fanastic place to stay with a group. ^ of us stayed in 2 bungalows, each equipped with a kitchen, at least 3 beds, a TV and air throughout. While the property is small, it's not crowded, offers a nice sun/pool area, a fantastic fresh continental breakfast (you actually sit and are served, not just grab preservative-filled muffins and joice from concentrate from a table) with fresh, tropical juice, fresh fruit, yogurt or cereal and toast awith home made jellies. The lush, garden-like environment was relaxing, pretty quiet, and offered a great "swim up bar" with fresh mojitos and solid sushi. The hotel is far enough from town that it's quiet, but close enough that it's an easy walk home at night.

We did run into a couple minor issues, like we didn't have enough keys at check in, and one of our doors wouldn't close properly, but for the most part, the issues were resolved to our satisifaction, and within a couple days.

Unlike others, we had no bug or lizard issues, although you're in a tropical environment so you could expect this to occur anywhere, I suspect.

It's not a 5 star property, but it was perfect for us, and I'd def go back, and recommend it to friends.

I found this hotel surfing on the web and thru TripAdvisor I could see some good reviews and decided to go for it.
All reservation process was easy and they gave you a discount if you are national tourist... As I have residence in Costa Rica I could obtain this discount.
I traveled with my wife, baby and parents. We stayed at a Bungalow that is full equipped kitchen for 4 people with refri and portable oven.
The cleaning is good enough and they provided us a crib with no extra charges. Staff is excellent and the swimming pool is great.
I do RECOMMEND this hotel however I make my observations in here:
1- Don´t leave food out of the refrigerator or over your things (bed, table, etc) because there are big aunts in the room (I read this in a review and it´s true) So to avoid this inconvenient to arrive at your room and see lots of aunts keep everything in order inside refri or plastics bags.
2- 2nd floor may be a problem if you travel with babies because the wood makes some noise when you step in. So my parents could not move on the bed during the night
3- Hotel has no parking lot. You have to park your car outside but nobody touched my car. I think the area is secure enough.

Following these observations you could go with no major issues

We stayed at this hotel for four days during Christmas and were extremely happy with our decision. Luna Llena is located about a block and a half from the beach, off the busy Tamarindo strip. It consists mostly of cabinas, but there are also a few rooms in a larger building as well.

The best part about Luna Llena is that it is small, quiet, has a nice pool and isn't anywhere near the throngs of tourists of Tamarindo. This is one of the few hotels that has been around for more than 8 years, and the owner is also a prominent activist for the wild monkeys that used to visit the beach here on a regular basis. If you've traveled to Tamarindo in the past, it is a taste of the old town that is hard to find these days.

If you are looking for 4-star accommodation and someone to be there for all of your needs 24 hours a day, this is not the place for you. Head to the Diria or Best Western, or another hotel that costs at least $100 more.

Tamarindo is a town that made its name on Ecotourism, but has fast fallen out of that route. Though some people in the town are fighting to keep development somewhat under control, it's a place that seems like it is still in transition from a sleep surfer town to a major resort destination. If you like the sleepy surfer town and eco-tourism feel, go to Luna Llena, relax in the pool, enjoy the friendly staff and watch the monkeys in the afternoons just two trees away.

Also - you can't beat the two restaurants (Sushi Club and Via Gusto del Italian) inside the hotel - their food is superb and staff goes out of the way to make your dining experiences superb.

we travelled with friends and was hugely disappointed and we joked that we would never forget about this experience. I don't remember when the last time we had stayed in a place with such poor room quality. and we had stayed in motel for 80-100USD in the US, and to spend 175USD(cash) a night for such quality is a joke. And did I forget to mention the power outage twice for 2 days that we were there? we happened to have brought the flash light but it was pitched dark so we didn't shower the kids and had to send them to bed ( oh, there is no water pressure if someone else is using the water from the lower attitude cabin, or if we flush the toilet when showering). the windows are all made of glass shutter so they are not sealed to reduce noise, the noise from the sushi bar kept us awake for a while before we can fall asleep. and I am used to the noise living in manhatten. the pleasant surprise of the whole stay is the fresh breakfast and the nice italian restaurant. I didn't try the sushi bar so I can't comment on that. in short, to spend 175USD a night here (though it's high season), but we paid 180USD for El Establo only, the experiences are hugely different.

Nice property that is comparable to Cala Luna for half the cost, and same amenities. On check out of hotel no problems, which is very different to our two past stays at Cala Luna.

Would recommend the property as a fun, eclectic property, with a nice sized pool, and very friendly pets roaming the property which made the stay more enjoyable. The employees are very nice and friendly, and they see to your needs while there.

No complaints and we will stay here again. It is one black away from the ocean, and the howler mokeys visit nearby the property every day, making this a great location.

The beds are incredible. The best I have seen in Cosat Rica.

Laundry service is fantastic!

We stayed in the bungalows which were spacious and had an upstairs with 2 twin beds. There is a refrigerator, microwave and heating element. The rooms were clean and the beds comfortable with perhaps a memory foam type mattress. We did notice a few ants and a gecko or two in our room during our stay and at night we could hear a critter scampering across the roof- but it is located in a tropical setting. The pool was very nice with a swim up bar. The Sushi bar is excellent with large portions ( 8 pieces). The prices started at $3.50 and up. There were a lot of people who came to the Sushi bar during our 4 night stay. The restaurant food was also very good but expect to pay $ 10-20. The room included breakfast which was toast, cereal and fruit. If you want eggs it cost extra. The only negative thing about this hotel was the lack of service. When we arrived there was no one at the reception desk nor in the surrounding area. We had to call on our phone to the hotel to tell them we were standing in front of the reception desk. Also during our stay the electricity went out ( due to someone driving over the electrical line). We were left in the dark in our room, no one came to check on us or update us. When we called and asked if they had candles or a flashlight they said they did not have either. Fortunately the power was only off a couple of hours but if it had been all night it would have been a problem to have absolutely no light source.

We spent 8 nights in Luna Llena, is a nice hotel, not fancy but is clean and the stuff is very nice. Very good price .
It was perfect for Us.
There is a sushi bar which is fantastic, very reasonable price, excellent and very very fresh.
The cocktails from the citrus bar are exotic and delicious.
It has a good location if you are looking for going surfing, as you have a few beaches close by, like Playa Negra, Avellanas and Grande. But you need to get there by car.
We are plased with the serviced we recieved.
NIce people!
