“Honeymoon Perfection!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2013

My husband and I spent 6 days at Villa Alegre for our honeymoon and had an AMAZING time! We ended up staying another 4 days at another B&B on Playa Grande just to get a feel for the different areas of Costa Rica, but we most certainly wished we just stayed at Villa Alegre. The other B&B was no where near as wonderful!

The owners of Villa Alegre, Barry and Suzye were vacationing during our stay, but they had another couple Kevin and Brunwin running the place and they did an excellent job! They were extremely friendly, welcoming, and my husband and I had a great time getting to know them. Kevin was an outstanding Chef!! Brunwin was very helpful getting our excursions booked and getting useful information to us.

Everything from the pool area to our room was always very clean! My husband and I hope to return to Villa Alegre again and we highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Tamarindo!

Room Tip: The Russian room is very spacious and is good for privacy! Mattress is a a little firm.

Villa Alegre was recommended to us as a great place to stay for a "destination wedding" by our friends. The owners, Barry and Suzye could not have been more friendly, accommodating and pleasant. Within minutes of our arrival, Suzye gave us a welcoming beverage and we had a map of the town with all the best places to eat, visit and explore marked out.
We awoke each day to the most sumptuous breakfast out on the backyard patio overlooking the pool, and the occasional visit from the town monkeys. Yes, Monkeys.
We had access to bicycles, and beach chairs and Barry and Suzye knew all the in & outs of Tamarindo. We could not have been more fortunate to stay there. Our rooms was comfortable and air-conditioned. We had a giant bathroom, tons of closet and drawer space.
And the rest of their staff made us feel right at home, as well.
Staying at Villa Alegre was like staying with family you only see once of year, but they treat you like the favorite cousins. It's perfectly situated just a short distance from the touristy part of town, and around the corner for the Estuary.
Of course, there is beach access. And WiFi.
No TVs in the rooms, but we didn't miss it. Not one bit.

Room Tip: We stayed in the room called USA, but you can view the other rooms at their website.

Twelve years ago, in 2001, I first stayed with Barry and Suzye. It was one of the most satisfying and relaxing vacations that I ever had. In an attempt to replicate this experience for a second time this past May, my wife and I booked a trip to Tamarindo along with four nights at the Villa Alegre. Immediately upon arrival, my hopes were confirmed -- this small piece of heaven on earth had been preserved to the same degree of perfection as 12 years earlier. Barry and Suzye continue to create the perfect escape to paradise.

The four key attributes that make the Villa Alegre so good:
#1) Barry and Suzye -- you will be hard pressed to find two more interesting and caring hosts anywhere in the world. Visiting them felt like a reunion of best friends separated by time and by distance. Not kidding, my wife and my eyes got watery leaving after having to say goodbye. I'm sure this has become a re-occurring issue at the Villa Alegre!
#2) Breakfast + the opportunity to meet other interesting guests -- every morning Barry and Suzye host a great breakfast. Not only is the food delicious but this meal allows everyone staying at the house to meet each other. Both times I stayed here, I found the other visitors to be very interesting people. Long conversations and many good times out and about became a byproduct of these breakfast meetings.
#3) House / rooms / grounds -- everything is clean, comfortable and well maintained. The views are remarkable and the ambiance is a perfect blend of relaxing and romantic. The ocean is just steps away. Nothing feels better than sitting in the pool, looking over at the ocean enjoying a tropical drink.
#4) Location -- the house is located just far enough from town to create a good buffer between your Tamarindo experience and the young hoi polloi down in the town. The walk is easy and offers plenty of good stops along the way. Within you first day, you'll be very happy about where you are positioned relative to the other hotels / resorts / b&b's.

Simply put, you are going to enjoy your stay at the Villa Alegre. Barry and Suzye could not be better hosts and the accommodations create a perfect setting for a luxurious getaway. As a value investor, I'm always on the hunt for a great value at a low price. In this respect, we're very bullish on the Villa Alegre. You just can't go wrong.

Villa Alegre was a clean, spacious and comfortable B&B for our last 2 nights in Costa Rica. The owners were so friendly that we felt like they were our friends. The location is perfect because one feels totally secluded, yet a walk to town or the "mercado" is easy and safe. The pool was perfect and the path to the beach enchanting. The breakfasts were beautiful and the tea/coffee was served with such elegance. You cant go wrong! Barry and Suzye will tell you everything you need to know about Tamarindo and their restaurant advice is really worthwhile. Their lending library was huge as well. The cleaning staff was exceptional. VIlla Alegre: A perfect choice!

Room Tip: We stayed in THE RUSIA room and it had a cozy porch looking out toward the water. It was very large...

We have stayed at Villa Alegre twice and love, love, love it and plan on making a return when we can. Barry and Suzye are charming hosts and you feel like you have new friends when you leave. The pool and rancho have everything you need to make it a relaxing vacation. Barry's breakfast is to die for. Don't miss out and not stay at Villa Alegre. You won't be sorry.

Room Tip: Both times we stayed in one of the little villas. Complete with kitchen and tons of space.

Barry and Suzye have built a fantastic B&B in Playa Langosta just a couple of kilometres from Tamarindo town centre. You are made to feel right at home here and Barry and Suzye are willing to help where they can. The views from the front of the house are great. Having your own car would be ideal but we either used taxi's or walked by the road or beach into town, The beach at the bottom of their path is quite rocky but there is a small area you can swim or just a couple of hundred metres down the beach is a good swimming area at the river mouth. If your into surfing there are some good breaks down at the river mouth and in town, both of which can get some crowds, but right in front of Villa Alegre are some good waves that don't seem to be ridden much. Ideal if you have your own board. There are a couple of restaurants nearby otherwise there a plenty of really good choices in town. Breakfasts are fantastic and a very social affair. Mancheta the dog will keep you entertained when you are sitting enjoying a drink taking in the view. I would highly recommend Villa Alegre to anyone intending to stay in this area.

Truly the look and feel of a villa. We enjoyed three nights in this beautiful home adjacent to a park and a short walk from the overlook right to the beach. What a view and beautiful sunset. Barry and Suzey were charming and helpful hosts. We enjoyed conversations and time with them. Their nineteen years experience at Villa Alegre gives them valued credibility with recommendations and a wealth of knowledge of the culture. They have traveled extensively and bring those experiences to their own place. Breakfast is served at a set time with everyone dining together and the hosts joining the guests at the table - very nicely done. Our breakfasts were delicious and we were tempted to sit and relax by the pool all day; but, Barry outfitted us with boogie boards and directions for sights to take in. We made sure to return early for that chill out time.
