“Loved it, wish we could have stayed longer!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

My favorite place in Costa Rica and probably in my Top 5 places ever (in this price range). Such a beautiful, yet rustic place. Loved the layout and décor with the beach as the front yard, which included chairs, hammocks and a daybed. Candles lit the hallways at night. The beds were very comfortable. The breakfast in the morning was great. The location is not in the thick of things, but that's what interested us - it's close enough! Eduardo and the crew were great. Eduardo was especially helpful in not only planning meals in Tamarindo, but also helpful in planning our one night stay in the San Jose area. We were 3 people total (me, my husband, and our best friend) and we all differed on the outside shower. Some of us liked it better than others, but all agreed a hand held shower nozzle with better water pressure and ability to clean out the fallen debris/leaves would have been better. The Howler monkeys howling late night on the first night was cool. The second night not so much, but it wouldn't keep me from staying there again. That's part of the charm of Costa Rica. It's their jungle and they are allowing us to share it with them. I was just so comfortable there that I was sad to leave. Stay as long as you can!

Room Tip: Didn't see the other rooms, but thought the Queen rooms were great.

This place is absolutely amazing!! From the 3 course breakfast every morning, to the awesome views and secluded beachfront location, to the hammocks throughout the property, to the covered bed right off the beach, to the location of all the Tamarindo eateries and shops to the wonderful staff!! An absolute 5 star!! Best vacation ever...don't miss out if you want a nice relaxing stay right on the beach!!

Room Tip: The Luna suite is amazing! Large with an in room hammock and an OUTDOOR shower that is wonderful!

Our family of 15 rented Sueno del Mar for week and had the best experience imaginable! There were 9 adults and 6 children and we rented the entire B and B for the week. Children are not allowed at Sueno del Mar unless you rent the whole place. It was amazing to have the whole place to ourselves for an entire week. The breakfasts were out of this world, I was surprised to have only gained a few pounds that week! We ordered 3 meals from SUNSET CATERING which was located right next door to Sueno. The delivered the meals, served and cleaned up! I would highly recommend them, we couldn't have found a better meal in town. There was such a variety of scrumptious dishes and we had more than enough left over for lunch the next day. The staff was wonderful and very helpful. Anything you need they will happily arrange for you from transportation to adventure trips to massages. 6 of us enjoyed massages right at the B and B. It was one of the best deep tissue massages I have ever had. The massage therapists were Kim and STacey-so worth it. Cost was 60 for an hour and worth every penny. The adventure day of ziplining, horse back riding, hot spas, etc... was so much fun. That too was arranged by the staff at Sueno. They made everything so easy. Like a previous reviewer stated, you do need to be aware of the howler monkey alarm clock, crabs in the shower, mosquitoes, and damp air. But if you want a truly unique place full of charm and relaxing places to sit, read and sunbathe in addition to looking for shells, surfing, walking, watching sunsets and enjoying nature then this is the place for you. Also, the kids loved the pool and we loved the fact that it was partly shaded and easily seen from many sitting areas. The spend hours in it each day. I would go back to Sueno del Mar in a heartbeat, we have memories we will treasure forever. Thank you to Eduardo, Susanne, Sol, Lily and the rest of the crew.

Beautiful B&B. WONDERFUL staff who gave us tips on the best restaurants, best coffee (truly outstanding and we'd have never stopped at that coffee shop), best Costa Rican souvenirs to take home. Delicious breakfast looking over the beach (people come just for the breakfast). Made special meal accommodations. Honor bar for cold drinks 24-7.

But you might want to know...There is a howler monkey family living in threes. Really cool? Yes. Very loud at 10pm and 5am? Yes. There also is a slightly funny smell right outside the B&B from their droppings. The rooms have their own AC but the windows are screens with shutters so there is always a moist feel in the room. The outdoor shower is a magnet for mosquitoes (and your body is not protected anywhere in the shower!) and a few will end up in your room. There is a HORRIBLE bumpy road-the worst road in the three areas we stayed in CR-to get from the B&B to town. Free wifi outside by the office is nice, but load up on mosquito repellent to be able to sit there for more than a minute or two, which is to be expected in CR.

I would stay there again but it was more "rustic" than I expected.

It been about a month ago now but we still have the best memories of this beautiful place. The B&B was perfect - you can just walk out to the beach and go for strolls - or chose to lie down on one of the sun beds which feel like beds indeed - so comfy! Wildlife all around you - monkeys, iguanas, cute looking squirrels, birds..Rooms are very generous sized and i have to admit i was actually glad there was no TV in there - vacation like that is not about watching TV and it gives you more quality time with each other:). Breakfast is awesome - 3 courses that don't disappoint and just amazing for a vegetarian like myself. staff are very nice and helpful - always full of tips and assistance. We hope to come back one day!

"Pura Vida" and "No Worries". Each phrase heard repeatedly during our June 11-16, 2013 stay at Sueno Del Mar, and each time, the resort lived up to it. From our check-in with Sol, to the delicious breakfasts served each morning by Lily and Helen, to the tours arranged by Sue or the recommendations for food and massages from Eduardo, this resort truly typified the "Pure Life". Our stay in the Luna suite (highly recommended) was truly magical, outdoor shower and hammock in room included. The location is excellent, only a short 10 minute walk up a beautiful beach to Tamarindo, but far enough away to be private and magical. Bathing in the outdoor shower with Howler monkeys and iguanas in the trees overhead just has to be experienced. If the opportunity arises, ask Eduardo for a massage recommendation. You will not be disappointed. Thanks Eduardo and Kim. And be sure to tell Sol to leave the lights OFF in the pool for you at night. She'll get a kick out of that. Lily's breakfasts were truly heavenly, and a full 3 courses to say the least. Dessert for breakfast is truly "Pura Vida,." The night staff even lights candles on the pathways at night for those returning from a nice meal in town at one of the many fabulous restaurants recommended by the hosts. Hammocks and Adirondack chairs are easily found on the beach, as well as a covered bed to watch the majestic Costa Rican sunset. Grab a bottle of wine or a cold Imperial from the honor bar, and walk the 40 or 50 feet to the beach front , and witness the intense colors of the setting sun. Need surf lessons? They can accommodate you there also. Thanks Brian. That man has patience you would not believe and makes learning to surf fun. The only regrets we had for our stay at Sueno Del Mar was not booking more nights. The staff here is wonderful, the resort magnificent, and the views and total experience was unbelievable. My wife and I were celebrating our 25 anniversary a little early, so I had high expectations, and Sueno Del Mar shattered them. Set yours high, and see if they can shatter yours. You won't be disappointed. Pura Vida!

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms, but the queen rooms are a little on the small side, but then again, how much...

I absolutely loved this place. One week before our trip to Costa Rica, I received an email that our hotel in Playa Brasilito burned down. We scrambled to find a place and luckily, I took a second look at Sueno del Mar and they had one room open-- the Osita. It was meant to be. Edwardo showed us around the grounds of the B&B and the whole time I thought, this is sooo much better than the pictures!! Our room was very large, but dark. It did not matter, the best part was outside on our private patio with private outdoor shower and bathroom-- absolutely gorgeous. We watched the monkeys and giant lizards from our shower! We had a gecko living in our room, but we were used to this-- they were in every room we stayed in in Costa Rica! The breakfasts were simply amazing-- I would eat there everyday if I could. The décor around the eating area, pool and beach area was just beautiful-- it felt like I was living in a magazine. My husband and I did not have a car so it took a little extra work to eat and go anywhere. For our first lunch, we went across the street and ate at the pool restaurant at Cala Luna-- gorgeous hotel and great meal. For dinner, we walked down the beach (~20 min) to Tamarindo and ate at Seasons (Edwardo had highly recommended it) and we loved it too. We easily took a cab home.

The next day, Edwardo had suggested that we check out a famous beach bar called Lolas. We walked to Tamarindo and took a shuttle to a hotel near the bar and walked quite a ways down a deserted beach until we got to Lolas. It was a cool bar with tons of surfers-- I would only go there if you have a car. We payed a local to drive us back! For dinner, we walked to Tamarindo again, and walked to the far edge of town to a restaurant called Pangas. Edwardo said it had a great atmosphere and inconsistent food-- we were totally bummed because they had a private party going on and it was closed. It looked awesome inside and I would totally have loved to check it out! Instead we ended up eating at Copacabana. Oddly, all of the restaurants were totally dead and this was one of the only ones with a few people in it. Food and atmosphere were pretty good.

Honestly, we did not feel super safe in Tamarindo at night. I was a little uncomfortable because the streets are not well lit if you get a little off the main drag and there were some sketchy characters around- this was the first place in Costa Rica that we were asked a few times if we wanted to buy drugs. I was glad I had the flashlight app on my phone because we used it to walk around. I was very glad to not be staying in Tamarindo.

Thanks for a great stay!
