“A great stay, steps from the surf”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2013

We had purchased a three night groupon stay and stayed here at vista villas in late April of this year. We were a bit apprehensive as there seemed to be very mixed reviews here on trip advisor. We can honestly say that we had a great experience at this hotel and would certainly recommend it to others - we stayed in one of the villas (not the two story building beside the pool - perhaps this is a reason for the differences in reviews?).
Our villa far surpassed our expectations - high ceilings with a nice bedroom, bath (basic), air conditioning and a step down common area with two large couches, a full kitchen and seated counter. Also, there was a fantastic walk out patio with comfortable furniture that overlooked the beach in the distance. We found our accomodations to be very clean.
We intentionally stayed on a Friday night as we wanted to check out this 'world famous' party at the monkey bar. Firstly, the monkey bar is a nice spot - a very nice pool with swim up bar and a fantastic patio overlooking the beach and stunning sunsets. The hotel was courteous enough to warn guests that there was going to be a party there on that night. The party itself was a bit disappointing - I won't go any further than that but perhaps it was because we slightly outside of peak season.
Overall, we had a great experience with this hotel and were glad we stayed. The location was literally, across the street from a surfer friendly part of the beach. Our room was great - clean and large and surpassed our expectations (we were even able to store our surfboards in the rooms comfortably). The staff was friendly (thank you Floribeth), the pool and deck was beautiful and we did not feel unsafe at any point.
Thanks!

I just returned from a 7-night stay at the Vista Villas. When I first arrived I was very excited because our room was cute, with a great view and a cute little outside area. We also had a kitchen which was really nice. There are many great things about this hotel and I don't want to take away from them. I loved our cleaning lady, Yessenia, for example. She was very sweet and friendly.

However, we had a lot of trouble using the card key to get into our room. We would always swipe at least 10 times at different speeds...but to no avail. This might sound like a minor issue, but we would trek up and down several flights of stairs sometimes several times a day in the hot sun to get new room keys. And then at times the new keys they gave us didn't work! The staff was friendly and they replaced the battery in the door unit, but it still didn't work on a regular basis. It wasn't a nice feeling to never know whether or not we would be able to get into our room. It doesn't make you feel very welcome as a guest of the hotel!

My other frustration was that we purchased a Groupon for our stay that included a surfboard rental at a nearby shop. We stopped by the surf shop several times over the course of several days and it wasn't open for us to redeem our voucher. We mentioned this to one of the managers and his response was, "Well, that's embarrassing." I know there is a slower, more laid-back pace at beach towns, but it would have been nice to use the surfboard rental that we paid for with our Groupon!

Finally, I am self-employed and when planning this trip I knew that I would have to work while on vacation so wifi access in the room was a priority for me. Sometimes the wifi would work and sometimes it wouldn't. It was just as inconsistent as our room key working. The wifi always worked at the rooftop bar, but it's no fun trotting your laptop up in the middle of a downpour in the rainy season because you can't get access in your room and have to send out an email.

I think that these experiences, particularly the room key situation, somewhat soured our overall experience at the hotel unfortunately. I extended my visit one night and decided to stay across the street at another hotel which I found much more accommodating...and the old fashioned key they gave me worked.

Room Tip: We had a very frustrating experience getting keys that worked for room 104.

After staying in many different hotels in CR, this is the one I liked the most. The rooms are up-to-date, secure and feel fresh. I stayed on the second floor which had beautiful view out over the pacific. Many CR hotels-rooms I've tried before has been on the dark side, but that wasn't the case at BW. No problems with AC, TV or bathroom. If you like to surf, the break you're looking for is just across the street (300m). Center of town is 5-10min walk, which I didn't mind at all. The staff are all very nice and helpful. The hotel has a great little surf shop where you can rent boards for dirt cheap or take lessons from Andrea, who's very knowledgeable and helpful. If it hadn't been for internet not working in the room, I would've given this hotel a 5-rating - It did work by the pool-area though. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Get top floor with view of the ocean. Friday night there's a loud party by the pool, so the room...

What a great compliment to say we are the hotel you liked the most in Costa Rica. We know how important it is to get ample light in your room, so with doors to the patio or balcony, you get plenty of it. And, of course, the great ocean view. Thanks for letting everyone know that our property is a nice, secure place to play and rest. We appreciate the recommendation.

We stayed here because we had read great things about this hotel before we bought a Groupon. When we got there, we were pretty disappointed. The hotel itself is very old, leaking toilets, noisy air conditioning units, sand on the floor even after the maid service. Blankets and sheets were all old and threadbare. The food was bad American cuisine.Free breakfast is your choice of three kinds of dry cereal, warm milk, yogurt that has been sitting uncovered all morning and your choice of white or wheat wonder bread. The staff is awesome, very friendly but it seems like the owner (who lives on site) has really tied their hands as far as the property goes. we knew we were leaving the States but this really could have been brought into the current century. The location was great, the view was phenomenal but wouldn't stay here again. Also, our "arranged" ride that was supposed to pick us up at the airport never showed (10:30 at night), so we had to take a cab. The hotel paid the difference between what we would have paid and what we were charged and the ripped us off on our ride BACK to the airport. They should have done more.

Room Tip: If you do stay here, try and stay in an upper floor unit overlooking the ocean and away from the poo...

Hello Kris, we remember you well and are sorry that you feel so negatively about your experience with us. We can tell that your point of view here was affected by the mix-up with the shuttle driver upon your arrival. From there, your comments about our hotel were tainted. As to the original problem, these things happen once in a while, and we do have about a third of our guests using the private shuttle and when they do, the trips are successful. Our staff made every effort to make you feel better, including reimbursing you for the difference between the shuttle and taxi, and REDUCING the rate of the shuttle by $30 for your return. How is that ripping you off? If your description of our rooms were accurate, we wouldn’t have so many good reviews here on Trip Advisor, and it’s a fact that we must maintain a certain level of bedding in order to pass the Best Western inspection. Also affected by your negative experience was your description of our breakfast. It is no secret that we serve a Continental Breakfast, as it is mentioned on our website, online travel agency sites, and many times in our TripAdvisor reviews. However, adding a few poorly selected adjectives can really make a hearty spread seem less so. For example, wouldn’t you prefer us serving “dry” cereal rather than soggy cereal with milk? And, our yogurt is on ice. What would you have us do, rotate the yogurt all morning? You’d be hard-pressed to find any hotel that does that. And why no mention of the cakes, fresh fruit, coffee and tea. In addition, we offer a variety of eggs, as well as French Toast, for a small fee.

The hotel exceeded my expectations and the staff was superb.
Especially enjoyed it more when we upgraded to a suite. The views were awesome from our room and pool area. The breakfast was very generous for continental. A simply walk to the beach and local restaurants were all nearby as well.
A special shout out to Treavor,Adolfo,Marie,Sandra and Florabeth.
We would definitley stay again!!!!!!!!

Thank you Gerald and Billy for your honest assessment of our hotel and staff. We do what we can to please our guests. We upgraded you to a Corona Suite, which is a large, one bedroom room, with a kitchen, living room and gorgeous ocean view. And there’s that nice mention of our “generous” continental breakfast, we really appreciate your truthful take on the complimentary meal we offer with all our rooms. Please do come back again; we love serving guests like you.

We discovered Vista Villas on the internet and booked our vacation with fingers crossed. We were delighted with the result! The staff were absolutely the best. Everyone from housekeeping to management treated us royally. The resort is perfectly located just steps from the beach with a fantastic view of the ocean. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the housekeeping is superb. The breakfasts were wonderfully local, with fresh fruit and juice and excellent coffee, We heard salsa, saxophone, and jazz played live at the beautiful poolside setting. Monkeys howled in the trees above us. Tours were easy to arrange from the office. And the price was so reasonable!
Our special thanks to manager Trevor and to Sharom, who were most hospitable. All the staff, however, were helpful and friendly.
It was an awesome vacation. We recommend it!

Room Tip: We upgraded to the 2nd level, but all rooms appear to have good ocean views. We always use earplugs...

Thank you so much Gloria, for taking the time to write these kind words about the Best Western Tamarindo Vista Villas, and our staff. We really want prospective guests to know that we might be a small hotel, but we try really hard to offer the best rooms and suites, most indeed with beautiful ocean views, and top-notch attention and service. And yes, our prices are reasonable! In addition, from the continental breakfast, full menu lunch and dinner, to the music which now includes the lite jazzy sounds on Thursday night as well as our popular Salsa Night on Friday, to the guys and gals in reception who also sell tours, we do strive to be what you described as “awesome.” We recommend that you return soon, as we will all be waiting to make you smile again.

Myself and boyfriend stayed for 7 days from May10 - May18. First time booking (anything) with GroupOn, so needless to say was a little wary concerning details and confirmations, but everything from beginning to end couldn't have been more seamless.

The hotel + room lived up to all expectations. From the shuttle pick up in private car (and a great driver, Ivan!) to the rooms, they are spic-and-span clean, cool and comfortable. That's all you need/ want when spending 3-4 hours in the Costa Rican sun. Large shower, there's a small stove, pans, dishes. We were in Room202 which I kinda preferred to the 3rd floor because you can step off your back patio and walk around. View: incredible. Noise: nonexistent with the exception of Friday night. And they are courteous enough to deliver letters on Friday informing guests about the jumpin' party which takes place weekly, so... all should be well warned. And you should be partyin' anyways!

The location is also ideal as it's about 5min from the main strip, so it's quieter in the evening and you get some privacy. The hotel pool is also a great respite from the salt water and sand!

First time in Tamarindo, Costa Rica -- there will be a second! Thanks BW Vista Villas for making it perfect!

Room Tip: 3rd floor rooms have a higher view of the ocean -- but 2nd floor rooms have a patio which you can st...

Wow, Tara, we really appreciate your great review. It’s really important to us that you took the time to write here in TripAdvisor about your “perfect” experience with us, because people read these reviews and make their decisions about where they are going to stay based on them. You seem to have been very pleased with the Best Western Tamarindo Vista Villas and we are glad that the GroupOn deal worked for you. While that deal offers our lovely Tropical suite, we offer an upgrade for a small fee, and you took advantage of that opportunity and in the process getting a gorgeous ocean view. The Corona Suite is about 850 square meters, quite large by local standards. Our maids, who have been with us for a very long time, work hard to make the rooms as clean and comfortable as they can. And of course, we think our location is optimal for checking out the waves each day, while being close enough to walk to the center of town in less than 10 minutes. If you should decide to come back and see us again, we’ll save one of our sunsets for you.
