“Great but Shady”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2014 via mobile

We stayed at this resort for 4 nights. It was overall a good safe resort but see below as we break it down into discernible pros and cons.

Pros:

1. The AC

2. Relaxed attitude (see 1 in Cons)

3. Gorgeous sunset seen from the hotel's premises

4. Safe location, also very convenient

5. Good spa

Cons:

1. Being solicited for drugs on the beach and in many other places in Tamarindo (unrelated to the hotel) only because there was beach access yet not beach chairs (sold separately for rent at $6/pop)

2. A sheet for a blanket

3. No mini bar

4. Ambiguity in bills (10% above 10% already charged at checkout for drinks without being told beforehand, differing late checkout charges)

5. Dark room

6. On our last day, we ran into 3 bats on our balcony

7. Restaurant recs seemed to be situated where they got a commission as we were recommended to La Palapa which induced food poisoning and we were told we needed reservations yet everytime we showed up at a restaurant it was not full.

We did not stay at Diria, but have eaten in their restaurant, which is good. Service was friendly and fast and food quality good. The resort is on the main road which runs through Tamarindo and which also bisects the resort. It is busy and noisy.
The town is touristy but pleasant and people are very friendly. The advantage is that there are amenities, which the more rural resorts are not close to.For young people, it would be a good fit.
If you want quiet, this is not a good choice.

Room Tip: Only ate there

My fiancé & I stayed here for 5 days; it was booked through a travel company & recommended from them. Upon check-in we were told we were being upgraded to a better room but the room we got was very small with no view and had 2 'queen beds' that were more like a standard 'double bed' size. Not very comfortable & we ended up each in a bed half way through the night. Also there was no fridge in our room which was very disappointing as it was so hot out we couldn't even keep our water cold.
The service from the staff at the restaurants and bars was very poor. We were ignored constantly & watched them play on their cell phones most of the time. For the price we paid we expected better service.
On a positive note the grounds were beautiful & the pools were always quiet; especially the adults only pool.
We wold not stay here again or recommend it to others.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for an ocean view room as it also has a fridge in it; must have for Costa Rica!

We booked the Diria to attend a wedding being held there. We have stayed at other resorts, and felt that this place, given its price, was lacking. Breakfast was included, and was o.k. but not stellar. Service at the restaurants could be improved as getting service was slow. We had stayed a week prior to this in another location and felt fine. However, most of the people we stayed with, and ourselves, were sick within one day of staying here. Tours prices were high given that we had paid more in 3 days for less than we did a whole week prior. The grounds were beautiful and well kept. This hotel bills itself as eco-friendly.......guess this translates to forget having any towels for the pool ever.....There was more than one pool. The one on the hotel site was small, and one had to cross a busy street to get to the second pool. Given the size of the resort, they lacked in the number of lounge chairs available, and many of those that were there needed replacing. Our room was noisy with it being on the street side of the hotel. The room was clean & well kept but the noise made it only receive a 2* rating. The beach was beautiful, but chairs were only available for a price. I do not know whether this was the Diria, or hawkers on the beach as the beach property itself is not owned by the hotel. The Tamarindo Diria fell short of our expectations.

My family and many other guests got very sick with traveller's diarrhea. We were told by staff that it was due to E-Coli contamination of the water. The property and staff were very nice, but this put a damper on our stay.

We went during sprink break and things got very loud at night, waking us up several nights.

Room Tip: Our hotel was located across the street from the beach and the main hotel area, but had a beautiful...

PROS: Beautiful grounds, kept clean, amazing breakfast, filling with TONS of options, clean rooms, Ideal location in middle of town, right on the ocean. Helpful staff.

Cons: No refrigerator or hair dryer. Bad pillows and bed, HARD HARD HARD pillows. You pay a lot for a standard room.

Lots of geckos, we made a game of guessing how many we would see going back to our room in the hallway. Sometimes up to 15 or more!!

I wouldn't stay here again however, to me it doesn't make sense to pay all that money for what ??? A nice pool?? Who needs a nice pool when you could spend the entire day at the ocean, only in the room to sleep and get ready. You can drink on the beach bring a cooler sit in some chairs and drink and be merry on half the cost.

My Husband and I stayed at the Diria for one night (the last night of our trip before heading home early the next morning). The service we received from the two gentlemen working when we arrived was great however, as the night went on, service took a turn for the worse. We had dinner at the restaurant on the resort(the food was amazing), things started out on a positive note however, my husband and I both finished our dinner and last sip of wine, then continued to wait for 45 minutes for our dessert and bill. When our dessert finally arrived after 45 minutes of waiting, my husband and I were quite annoyed, and asked for the bill once again. After waiting another 25-30 minutes for our bill which never came, we finally decided to get up and start to walk away. I had planned on going back to our room to call front desk and have them charge our room, but as we were walking out, I guess we finally got the attention of one of the employees.
After dinner, we headed to our room which was a beach front ground level room. Once ready for bed, we started hearing loud noises coming from the ceiling (I actually took several videos recording these loud noises), so we asked our neighbours about it and they had been hearing the same commotion. I proceeded to call front desk about this matter, as the noise kept getting louder and louder making it impossible to sleep. After about 2 hours of calling front desk to ask for updates, we were finally offered a different downgraded room. Might I add that I was also told by an employee that the noises in the roof were raccoons, and guests had previously complained the night before about the noises. After hearing this news, I wondered why on earth we were still put in that room after complaints and the matter had not been fixed.

When we were finally offered our new room, we made our way to the lobby area/front desk and weren’t acknowledged by any of the employees for at least 15 minutes. When we were finally acknowledged, one employee said to follow him up to the third floor. He offered to carry my suitcase, but my husband was stuck lugging his large suitcase up three flights of stairs. At the time of the room swap, absolutely no apologizes were made. Nor were any made the next morning when we checked out of the hotel.

I emailed the Daria several times to give them the benefit of the doubt to rectify the situation, however, I never heard back from anyone. It is quite disapointing since the hotel is quite beautiful and in an amazing location.
