“Best Hostel in Tamarindo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2012

I started out at the Pura Vida Hostel, but I soon moved over to Botella de Leche after randomly walking inside to check it out. Tamarindo is a hot, hot place, so the fact that the rooms have A/C and they have a great pool is greatly appreciated. At first, it may seem like you're far away from the main road and the beach (5 minute walk), but I think it's better this way because the main road can get pretty noisy. I'd say the bathrooms and kitchen are just okay, but everything else is great and more than makes up for this. Also, the people who run this place are super friendly and accommodating.

We found this hostel's website in our Central America guidebook and gave them a call to make a reservation. Upon arrival, we were checked into a small private room, it had 1 double bed, bathroom and a very old looking air conditioner. We found a lot of ants in the bathroom so we asked if there was another room - I am soooo glad we did!! Room #7 was a million times better. It was large, had a double bed and a bunk bed, small refrigerator, ceiling fan, modern split system a/c and decent bathroom. We had this room for 3 nights for $36USD per night. Even though it was hot outside, the room was cool. Note: A/c is only switched on after 6pm - we found the fan cool enough during the day though.

The hostel is lovely, it has a kitchen (did not use) and TV in the common area and a lovely pool in the middle. It was nice to have a dip but did get crowded when larger groups came in. There was some noise at night but everyone seemed to abide by the 'silence after 11pm' rule. I had no trouble sleeping.

We took a surf lesson from Francisco which was a lot of fun. It was our first time and Francisco explained everything for us in English and was very helpful and supportive on the water. We even managed to stand up a few times too. At $30USD it is the cheapest in the area - most of the surf shops are $45.

All in all, a great choice for Tamarindo

Room Tip: Try to get a room towards the back; the rooms on the right side as you walk in are smaller and older

This is a great hostel, we met so many amazing new friends here. The cleanliness and the kitchen is what you can expect when staying at a hostel, but you have everything you need. Hammocks everywhere and every room has a little sitting area outside the door. Every room has its own bathroom (rare in hostels). The pool is a big plus, the water is very cold, which is nice after a hot day on the beach! Stay here if you want to meet new people and have fun, not if you want to relax and sleep a lot.

Room Tip: If you can, choose a room for 4 people and not the biggest ones with 10.

Very good hostel, with AC, very clean and most important, for any backpacker, very secure too. They have a pool in the middle of the Hostel right in front of the rooms and the people there are extremely helpful. Summarizing La Botella de Leche its an awesome place to stay in Tamarindo.

We booked a private room at this hostel and our experience was wonderful! The host, Marianna, is a wonderful woman full of character and information. Her son Francisco is also a wonderful guy who teaches surf lessons for a great price and is extremely friendly and hospitable. During our stay we met numerous people from all over the world and made quick friends. The layout of the hostel was great... Dorms on the left, private rooms on the right, a beautiful pool in the middle and the kitchen and hang out areas in the back. Everything was open air and we even got to see some awesome wildlife just sitting on the couches. One morning an iguana jumped from the roof into the pool to cool off and he hung around for a while until we were able to snap photos. We also saw giant grasshoppers, lizards and a big toad. Our rooms were freshened up each day, the kitchen was cleaned every morning and the place was kept nice and tidy throughout the day. Free coffee each morning and about a 10 minute walk from the beach. We loved it! Kinda far from the hustle and bustle of the center of the town but worth the walks.
A few things that people might not like:
1.There is a cat that sits on the counter and meows while everyone is cooking, begging for food. Marianna shoos it away but it always comes back.
2. There are multiple dogs owned by the host. They are not bothersome but sometimes they bark and fight.
3. There is smoking allowed in the general hangout area.
4. You only get one towel for your entire stay and the rooms are very basic (but with air conditioning!)

I really enjoyed my stay here at the botella de leche. Close to pretty much everything and the family was more than happy to let you eat with them and help you in any way possible. It is a family owned est. So there are lil kids around which was fine with me but not the ultimate party spot if that is what ur looking for. Very relaxing and comfortable environment.

After a long day of travel from Nicaragua into Costa Rica, my brother and I ended up in Tamarindo at around 9pm. We had no place to stay so we just walked down the street and checked the rates and vacancies a few of the hostels. Eventually we found "The Milk Bottle".

For $32. a night (total) the two of us had a comfortable room with one big bed and a set of bunk beds; a private bathroom; Air Conditioning; a ceiling fan; and a mini-fridge. Right out side our door we had a small patio with two chairs, a table, abd a hammock. From the patio we walked down two steps and were in the middle of the open-air hostel. There was a swimming pool; a kitchen, a TV with couches, a couple of old computers; and Free Wi-Fi.

The place is owned by a nice Argentine lady and her daughter-in-law (from San Francisco). The owner's son runs a surf shop and offers surfing lessons at the end of which he brings you to his Mexican restaurant - which is included in the cost of the surfing lesson.

When we were ready to move on to our next destination the staff made a reservation for us on one of the daily shuttle bus services which pick you up and drop you off at your hotels. When we originally tried to make a reservation the buses were already filled up so we had to wait another day, and then the shuttle bus forgot to pick us up. But they finally got us the next day.

The place is managed very well and is definately a friendly environment. It's about a 200 meter walk to the town centre. Without packs on it shouldn't take you longer than a few minutes to arrive at the beach.

If I find myself back in Tamarindo: I'll be sure to stay here again.
