“Awesome Resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2013

We came to Cala Luna for a wedding; which was amazingly beautiful. Everything there was awesome! The hotel itself is gorgeous and the staff was very friendly and helpful. They booked excursions for us and flights to get back to the airport. They made our vacation very easy and enjoyable. Esteban was so helpful and he made sure we were taken care of! I would recommend this hotel to anyone going to Tamarindo. Hopefully I will be able to go back some day!

Room Tip: If you have a large group, the villas each have a private pool.

This was our first vacation in Costa Rica, and after much research, we decided to stay at Cala Luna, arriving on June 16. We couldn't be happier with our decision.
The grounds are beautiful, the villas are spacious, the staff were friendly and helpful.
In particular, Enrique, waiter at their main restaurant, was witty, knowledgeable and very helpful. We shared stories on our cultures, laws, and geography. The restaurant was outstanding.
Victor, our guide during our excursion to Ricon de La Viejo National Park and volcano, was outstanding as well. His father, Hugo, is a driver for the resort and equally friendly.
Anne, the concierge, was very helpful arranging tours.
Complaints are minor- nightly removal of land crabs from the villa may annoy some, but we found it amusing. Mosquitos and ants are inevitable in Costa Rica, including the resorts.
All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Cala Luna.

This place looked good in pictures and sounded even better in descriptions, but it completely exceeded our expectations! The scenery was beautiful, the villas were spectacularly spacious and the staff was always catering to us and making sure we had everything to our liking. One staff member in particular came to be one of our most trusted informers/advisors and even a close friend during our stay. Enrique was not only the best waiter in Cala Luna, but he got to know us on a personal level and we exchanged tips and information about each other's country that were both extremely helpful and interesting. The front desk made it very easy to plan last minute day trips such as hiking, volcano tours, hot springs, kayaking, snorkeling and even just calling a taxi when we needed one. Everyone was so friendly and we had an amazing time at this resort!

We stayed at Cala Luna from June 8 to 14th and had a wonderful time. The staff at the hotel is exceptional. When we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by the outstanding staff. They truly know the meaning of customer service. They provided us a refreshing drink along with a towel in order for us to refresh our self from the drive from the airport. We dined in the restaurant, the staff was exceptional and our first experience in meeting Enrique. They were all exceptional, however, Enrique knows how to take it to a different level and make you feel like family. We stayed in a Villa and highly recommend it! There is nothing like waking up to Howler Monkeys, birds, and the sounds of the rainforest. Thanks Cala Luna for a wonderful vacation.....we will be back.

The rooms are very nice, also the restaurante and the pool but is not a top hotel.
The beach has a lot of stones. It´s impossible to swim or surf.
It´s a nice hotel if you like to stay in the pool. If you want to go to the beach you must rent a car...because there are so many incredibel beaches!!!
The restauant it´s very nice...try the Mediterrean salad!!!

We stayed in a hotel room for half a week and then received an upgrade to a large Villa with it's own pool for the 2nd half compliments of the hotel. We loved the resort. The decor is gorgeous, the free breakfasts were scrumptious, the pool lovely, the staff super friendly, the yoga pavilion and intstructors excellent, the availability of bikes for rent to go into town and the seclusion of being a little on the outskirts of Tamarindo with a private path to the beach was fantastic. We would like to come back with kids and stay in a Villa. Loved the howler monkeys along the path to the beach and the wild birds everywhere, even at the breakfast table. The staff were so friendly and helpful, we were treated like kings and queens. The only drawbacks and they were minor, is we did not like the dinner menu as much as the breakfast menu and the Villa needed doorsweeps to keep out the ants.

Tamarindo was the last stop on our Costa Rican trip, and Cala Luna provided by far the best service we have experienced in years. The staff was so wonderful and accommodating. Any need, they were there to provide. The resort is (thankfully) not in the very center of town, so it was quiet and serene. The rooms are large and well equipped. Each day we would walk down to the sand, and take the short walk to Tamarindo beach. The morning breakfast was amazing, with your choice of fabulous dishes. The pool was clean and well maintained, and the pool service was excellent. Early each morning you can hear the howler monkeys (although we did not see any). The resort offers nightly cocktails by the beach where other guests would gather to watch the sunset.
They also offer several excursions that they are more than happy to book for you.
A few things to note: You cannot have enough bug spray. I cannot emphasize this enough if you are sensitive to bug bites. Unfortunately, while asleep at night, I was bit on the face (and had one unsightly vision in the mirror the next day), and had to take allergy meds for the swelling to subside. I spent the remaining three nights sleeping with bug spray on my entire body and face!
Another thing is that in the villa rooms, the walls are paper thin, so if you are a light sleeper, or like to sleep IN, you may have a problem. Thankfully, we were up each morning before 7, but so were our neighbors! YOU can hear EVERY word those in the adjoining room are saying...
