“Not sure what others are writing about”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2013

We just spent a week at this hotel staying in a villa. It was not what we were expecting. Out plumbing was atrocious. Our shower had no water pressure, both toilets leaked and the sink was slow to drain leaving an awful smell in the villa. When we asked the front desk to fix it, they opened the bathroom window.
The daily cleaning was bizarre. They rarely took out the trash. When they made the beds, they sort of threw the thin comforter on the bed and placed a few pillows on it. There was nothing in the room to let you clean your own dishes and they would only rinse them. Everything tasted like whatever we had the day before. They wouldn't even change the toilet paper rolls. Very strange for such a 'nice' hotel.
The breakfast was okay. They had a buffet, but most of the wait staff stayed in the kitchen while the wild birds ate whatever they wanted from the buffet. The birds would stand on the fruit and pick through pieces. Made me so sick to watch.
This hotel is not on the beach. You can walk down a trail to get to the beach, but it is not a useable beach. We were traveling with kids and they couldn't get into the water since it was so rocky and the waves were rough over the rocks. When we went into town there were lots of nice looking hotels right on useable beaches. I would stay at one of those if you are looking for a nice place to stay in Tamarindo.

We are truly sorry your stay at Cala Luna did not turn out the way you had expected it to be. We know how precious vacation days are and that is why we strive to uphold our promise of total customer satisfaction. My wife and I just book a week at Cala Luna for April with our 11-month old son. Very excited after seeing all of your reviews. Any recommendations on things to do, places to eat while we're here? Also, I have not heard anyone mention the Wifi situation at the hotel. I will have to do some work and am curious what the quality is like.

We picked this hotel solely based on TA reviews, so thank you all!

We are thrilled that you choose our hotel for your upcoming holiday with your family. Tamarindo is a small but very bustling town with plenty of restaurants, nice shops and lots of activities to do. As a true addict to good food, there are several restaurants in town I love to go to, though as a true food addict ( I am from Belgium) I foremost recommend both our restaurants (the lobster Chardonnay is my birthday favourite). And in case you would like to spend a romantic night out or go on an excursion (we have a range of tours and activities that we offer), the hotel can provide a babysitting service. Our free Wifi system works throughout the whole property, although we still are in Costa Rica, so a minor fall out is possible. Please come to my office in case this happens. I am very much looking forward to meeting you soon. Ann Vervoort, Guest Relations Manager

This was our first hotel stop in Costa Rica having been driven for five hours from the San Jose airport. The dirt road to the hotel was very bumpy but there were several other fine hotels in the same area. Our room was not ready when we arrived so we ate a good lunch at the hotel while we waited. Our room was very nicely appointed together with a huge mini pool size tub/shower. However, the shower water temperature varied while using it. The swimming pool was nice but there were limited lounge chairs available especially in the shade. We did have a very good buffet style breakfast with lots of fresh fruit one day and menu style the other days. The restaurant and bar are both open to the pool area. It's a short walk down the stairs to the beach area (Langosta) where they provide happy hour free drinks. You can, of course, walk on the wide beach and stop at various bars/restaurants on the way. My primary reason for only giving Cala Luna a very good rating was that it was not beachside. There are other hotels in the area which are.

We stayed here for 3 nights with our children and had a wonerderful time.
The breakfast was great, and although we rarely eat in the hotel when we travel, we had 2 amazing meals in the pool lounge. We ordered from the Tapas menu and the food was very good, but we came back for a seconf time because of the service. Sasha, our waitress was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful.. Thank you Sasha for taking such good care of our family!
The service makes all the difference when you are travelling, and we will most definitely return to Cala Luna.

Room Tip: tapas in the pool bar and ask for Sasha

Fantastic accommodation and service. Had a villa with private pool and it was very spacious and private. Front desk served every need we had and food at both restaurants was excellent. Only downside was that there weren't many other kids and we were always worried ours were disturbing other people.

I can't give enough praise to the Cala Luna Hotel and Staff. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The staff assisted in everything from booking excursions to having late night drinks delivered to the rooms. The grounds of the hotel are stunning and are only a short walk from down town Tamarindo. Everything about the hotel was comfortable and inviting. The open aired restaurants, bar and happy hour on the beach were fantastic. We enjoyed the privacy of the villas and the atmosphere of the pool and restaurant area.

I would absolutely recommend staying at Cala Luna! We hope to visit again!
