We enjoyed this property. We were in the newest one with AC. We had no issues with bugs- but there were a lot of big ants. We left the bathroom light on at night hoping to scare them away. The check in staff was very friendly, pool was great and hammocks were very welcoming. I enjoyed the pool table in the dining room. Food was good, drinks a little pricey. They will sell you a bag of ice so buy some local rum and drink in your room! The only thing I would change was that on one night they only offer Argentina bbq in the dining room and no regular menu. So if you don't eat meat you are out of luck. Also, bring a flashlight- at night it's very dark walking to and from the dining room. Hubby wasn't too impressed with the surf out front so we ended driving an hour each day to a "secret spot" but I thought it looked good. Overall the property was safe, hospitable and met our needs. No complaints here. Great sunsets!

Staying at negra was absolutely the perfect move for us. We were looking for something mellow and close to surf. Every morning we woke up to beautiful weather and waves. They have an open-air bar/restaurant that sits on the beach, and is a perfect backdrop for an afternoon drink.
A few suggestion for a future visitor:
--The lighting along the pathways isn't the best, so bring a headlamp.
--Bring some sort of beach umbrella (if that's possible) they do not have a lot of shaded areas.
--Be sure to lay out in the hammocks.
--The road getting to negra is bumpy..so drive slowly.
--We had an older room and it did not have air conditioning, which did not bother us, but if you want it they have newer rooms with AC.

Room Tip: Our hut was 7. Great location, even though they all sits nicely.

If you are high maintenance and prefer room service and fluff then this is too cool of a spot for you. Private tiki huts with sounds of the ocean, romantic landscaping, and quiet are awaiting you here at Hotel Playa Negra. 50 yards from the beach and a lovely little cafe. Picturesque, tropical, rustic and everything you need for a great nights sleep. Nice breeze & ceiling fan made it quite comfortable without ac. We are anticipating this to be the highlight of our stay...but seriously high maintenance whiners please stay away!! My husband and I loved, loved, loved starting our first trip to Costa Rica here

Room Tip: Proximity to the ocean go for bungalows, hammock and ac spring for suites.

After reading all the good reviews for this hotel we decided to stay her for two days (jan 29 & 30).
We could not be more disappointed. Bugs and ants everywhere in our room. I can handle bugs but this was real bad. Big ants all over toilet and sink. ore would ome as fast as we would kill them. We found that if we sprayed OFF BUG spray all around the bed we could sleep without getting invaded (I wish we new that the first night).

There was two swimming pools which one had no water. Six wooden lounge chairs around the pool for everyone.

Restaurant was nice and clean but food was way way over priced.

Owners seamed not to have any interest in you unless you were a surfer. Funny thing is surfers came during day then left not staying or spending their money.

Beach was fine but much better everywhere we stayed in Costa Rica.

This place hit its prime 10-15 years ago. Its landscaping is nothing but weeds about a foot high.
Don't believe the pictures!

Bottom line, we would of been much happier staying in Tamarindo.

We stayed at Hotel Playa Negra from November 13 – November 15th. During our 2 weeks of travel through the country we stayed in 6 different lodging facilities and sadly Hotel Playa Negra ranked a close 2nd to the last in my book, which was disappointing since we all had high hopes for this place, especially since it was the most “resorty” we stayed at. I can’t say our stay was horrible, but our other lodging experiences during the trip set the bar very high. Below I have listed the Pros and Cons of our stay at Hotel Playa Negra.

Cons

Food and drink prices were the highest we paid for during our entire 2 weeks of travel.
The food itself was not that impressive for what it cost (splurged and got the lobster = wasted $26USD).
They did not include breakfast but yet was the 2nd most expensive place we stayed at. (Only one other place did not include breakfast but they accommodated us in other areas.)
The only place that did not offer complimentary coffee, you had to pay per cup no free refill. (This was a major red flag for us)
Upon entering our room we found a live cockroachs under the bar of soap, killed 3 more in the shower that first night, second night found 6 roaches in our drinking glass….needless to say Cockroaches were a problem in our Cabina. Don’t get me wrong, I do understand that roaches are common in tropical environments, but the majority of our lodging was spent in more remote, off the beaten path, locations and yet we never came across a cockroach or bug.
Restaurant staff was not outwardly friendly.

Pros

The pool was enjoyable to sit around and the water was refreshing.
The beach was nice and clean.
Staff in the reception office was helpful when we checked in and checked out.
The Cabinas are a neat idea.
The mixed drinks were good.
Both the beach and swimming pool were almost at the front door.
Dining area was nice with a great view of the beach.

I don’t mean for this review to sound overly negative, but like my previous statement, our other experiences left such a positive impression with us that we were all pretty disappointed with Hotel Playa Negra. But we did not let this get us down, as our trip through Costa Rica was a once in a lifetime experience and left us with many stories to tell.

My father has been coming here to surf for over 20 years. He loves Renun and the staff like family. I recently had the opportunity to finally visit for myself. As far as the rooms go, there are some nicer more Americanized-cabinas available or you can go with a more rustic Costa Rican style cabina. We had the latter down by the beach restaurant. A couple notes about the rooms. They Costa Rican style are not for the faint of heart, the 'windows' do not close fully as they are wood panes you turn to open/close, there is a fan for A/C, showers don't always have hot water and the beds are average. Understand, Hotel Playa Negra is more about the remote location, excellent surfing and the cool locals/staff than a top-notch luxury retreat. We enjoyed the restaurant bar most of the time as the point of visiting is to not run around. The food is good and the staff are great. During my stay, we didn't have any issues with food prep, service or rooms. I see why my Dad comes every year for a month!

Room Tip: If you need custom fit bathing suits, rash guards, etc. just down the road is a local named Margaret...

This is a really special property. The bungalows are so charming -- very clean, though bugs and such will get in. We had a bit of an ant problem in our first room, but not in our second (we switched rooms halfway through to move to a bungalow with air-conditioning). The beach access is incredible, and even if you don't surf, you'll enjoy watching others tackle the waves. But it's also great to be able to sit sand-free by the pool, where you can see and hear the waves. I took advantage of the beachside yoga with Rosalie, who was wonderful. The restaurant is good but pricey. We had our Christmas Eve dinner there and unfortunately it was especially expensive while also being really disappointing. But the regular menu's food was tasty. Overall, highly recommended if you want a more off the beaten path vacation.

Room Tip: The air-conditioned suite-bungalow was worth the extra spurge for us.
