“Pure Tico Atmosphere..”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2014 via mobile

A wonderful park and soundstage in the heart of Santa Cruz. A great place to rest a while, grab a drink or pipa fria from a local vendor and soak up some tico culture.....pure and simple, tranquil and alive. The perfect surroundings to spend some time and share some words with the locals.....pura vida!

“Attractive park with many events”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

The Bernabela Ramos Park is always a nice place to sit and reflect. For most of the year it is a quiet typical Costa Rican park. There is an interesting dome in the center with carvings that reflect the culture of Guanacaste. There are also several statues around the edges of the park.

For at least two weeks in January the park becomes a center of activity for the Santa Cruz fiestas - a huge celebration that blends religious (less so today), pride in the traditions of Guanacaste, cultural events and a prolonged fiesta with more beer and music than you can imagine.

The fiestas begin on the 14th of January with the Entrance of the Saint - the Black Christ of Esquipulas, patron saint of Santa Cruz. The festivities run until the 20th with daily bulls in a rough wood bull ring constructed each year in the Park of the Mangoes, a few blocks north of Ramos. There are beer tents, carnival food stands and music until all hours. In fact, the saint does not arrive at Bernabela Ramos on the 14th - there is a street altar set up for him about one block west and two blocks south to allow for the more popular (and secular) Tope - traditional horse parade - to pass by the park.

The park is alive with food venders, children's bouncy castles, street venders of most everything, etc. Across the street to the east is the church and the old red tower - part of a previous church that refused to be torn down. The entrance to the church is occupied by food venders and stands with religious items. It is traditional to buy a "milagro" (small shiny medal) of some body part that ails you and deliver it to the saint as a petition for a cure.

On the 15th of January there is a big stage set up on the north side of the park for a concert and then a mass. Mass begins around 5, but people are set up around the park several hours earlier. The saint leaves his street altar around 4 and does a procession around town, arriving at Bernabela Ramos around 6.

The week preceding the fiestas is a Guanacaste cultural celebration with art shows, concerts of traditional music, folk dancing, etc. These events are usually listed in the paper and there are programs available locally.
