“Great Family Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

We found the Fenix to be an ideal place for a family on a budget. When driving through the neighborhood during your arrival, you will have doubts about your decision to stay here. Have no worries, it is great. It is directly on a beautiful beach and the grounds are nicely shaded by palm trees. No, it is not high end hotel and whether or not it is right for you depends on what you want. The six rooms form a semi-circle and you will get to know the other guests pretty quickly. We ended up having a spontaneous potluck dinner and a small bonfire on the beach with the other guests. Our kids liked meeting the other kids and playing with them in the pool. We liked the "laundry room" with reasonably priced drinks and free beach toys and boogey boards. A couple without kids or wanting a more private vacation might not be attracted to this set-up, but for us it was ideal.

The place is entirely run by Phyllis and a couple of very nice towns people that she has hired (who work very hard). Phyllis is always around and I found her to be very business like and helpful. She arranged a fishing tour for us as well as the samara trails tour (which I highly recommend). We enjoyed her company as we got to know her a bit better toward the end of our week when there were fewer guests at the hotel.

What could have been better? I heard a very faint bass from club music in Samara in the middle of the night on one of our nights. The rest were silent. I can only imagine that other places closer to town would have the problem as well. (The Fenix is on the other end of the beach) Samara itself has gotten a little bit touristy on weekends. The rest of the time it was deserted.

Any other improvements in amenties (air conditioning), large pool, etc. would have taken away from the charm of this place. We wanted to meet other people and the set-up of the hotel encourages that. Would we go back? Yes. Our kids loved boogey boarding and shell hunting. We found good local food. (You have to go into town -away from the beach restaurants to find a true "soda". Check out "Cocochos" - Ask the locals otherwise you will never find it. Have the cerviche.

We hit Playa Samara right at the beginning of the rainy season. Everything was green and beautiful! What a treat to stay at Fenix Hotel on the Beach. Steps away from the beach. With only 5 other units, it was as if we had the place to ourselves. The owners live right on site and made us feel right at home. The personal touch was a nice change of pace from the larger hotels. A short drive to quaint Playa Samara. We would definitely stay there again.

My best friend and I did a girls getaway and couldn't have chosen a more scenic or laid back hotel. A six-room horseshoe-shaped hotel right on the beach, run by one of the coolest ex-pat couples in town. I"m only sorry we didn't bring any craft beer for Phyllis's hubby — will do next time ;). Really good value for money.

Thanks so much!

Hotel Fenix has one of the most enviable locations on the beach. When the tide is in it's literally a seashell's throw from the water's edge. Now add to this a delightful swimming pool, hammocks beach chairs ringed by palm trees, an attentive host (Phyllis the owner) and you know why it is so popular.
Thoroughly recommmend Hotel Fenix!

My parents and I stayed at Fenix Hotel on the beach for four nights. We travelled around Costa Rica for a month and this was our 'mini-holiday on our holiday'. We found it by chance and instantly fell in love. We were in unit number six -- we had A/C, a full kitchen, a single bed and an adjoining bedroom with a queen bed. The unit was modern and beautifully decorated. Outside our unit was a small pool that they cleaned daily. Fenix Hotel was literally steps away from the beach. The property was quiet and on a beautiful stretch of beach. Fenix Hotel provided comfortable loungers, palapas and hammocks to relax in. Phyllis, the owner, was excellent and really made sure that we were always comfortable and well taken care of. We even had fresh pipa fria (coconut water) and mangos right from the trees on the property. We loved this place so much!

What a great place! I definitely would like to go back. Phyllis was a wonderful host. She gave us a lot of information and was always around to help or answers questions. The facility was very clean and very well maintained. Our rooms felt like home. Each room had a kitchen which we used a lot. Grocery store and fresh fish shop a minute walk away. Very relaxing stay.

Fenix Hotel was the perfect home away from home! Right away Phyllis made me and my group of friends feel very welcome. She took the time to get to know us a little bit and frequently checked in to make sure we were happy and had everything we needed. Staff on hand were also very friendly and catered to our every need. Laundry is available if needed which was very useful! It was also very convenient to have a kitchen in the room and a grocery store a 2 minute walk away. Guests are also able to use a charcoal BBQ, which I thought was fantastic! The location of the hotel is beautiful with the trees, the pool, and the ocean all around. It was nice that hammocks and lounging chairs were set up each day. There is lot's of cool wildlife around, such as hermit crabs, iguanas, geckos, and howler monkeys. All in all, great stay, lot's to see and do, very relaxing and I would definitely come here again! Thanks Phyllis!
