“One of the best tropical vacation spots I've seen”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

Large and beautiful rooms with TV, fridge, A/C, fan, balcony, large tiled bathroom. Nice to hang around the pool for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Two minute walk to less traveled part of Playa Samara, with terrific sunsets. But we preferred the seven minute walk to Playa Carrillo, which is one of the most beautiful beaches, if not the most beautiful, that I've ever seen (and I've been in lots of places). Very few people on the beach, mostly local folks, and unlike Jamaica or many of the Carribean islands, no one will bother you. And there's plenty of shade under the palm trees. Not a surfing beach or snorkeling, but wonderful for swimming.

One thing you should know is that the Hideaway is nowhere near most of the hotels in Playa Samara and it's a looong walk to town, probably 2 miles along the beach which is brutal in the midday sun. You should really have a car. But that distance is an advantage because of the proximity to Playa Carrillo, which is where you want to be during the day.

The service is beyond friendly. The most friendly hotel service I've ever experienced, period. The food is terrific and reasonably priced. We had the included breakfast, which was good. The guacamole and tuna sandwich (fresh fillet of tuna) was terrific for lunch. I recommend the sea bass with coconut sauce for dinner, though there are good alternatives that was my favorite. And Rosy's homemade brownies and homemade ice cream are a wonderful topper.

Thank you Doug and Rosy for a wonderful vacation. Thanks as well to Loida, Marcello, and Bryan. You are all wonderful hosts. I hope we can return someday. I've already recommended your hotel to several friends.

P.S. The howler monkeys did not come out much for us, though we did see them once and they do live in the trees behind the rooms. I think it's a seasonal thing if they're making their presence known. So you might have more luck with that.

Room Tip: We had Room 8, which is on the second floor and which we liked. Upper floor rooms are probably bett...

This place was great from the second we walked in. We were greeted with great service and they went above and beyond our entire trip. The hotel location is perfect, you can walk to the beach and see the sunset, the food, rooms, pool, all around I would recommend this to any traveler.

The Hideaway Hotel is truly a hidden Jewel. My husband and I had a wonderful, relaxing time there in early February. Doug and Rosy, the proprietors do a fabulous job. It starts before you arrive. They will help you with transportation, excursions and any questions. The rooms are large, modern and very clean. But it's the setting that makes this place unique. It's quiet and peaceful with a small pool, great music, and great food. We ate dinner there 3 nights and every meal was excellent. The beautiful beach and clear water ofPlaya Carrillo, is a five minute walk. Playa Samara is one minute from the property and the town of Samara is a cab ride or long walk (40 min) walk. We would definitely recommend to anyone coming to Costa Rica.

My friends and I found Hideaway on Trip Advisor. The reviews were great and spent two nights of our six night trip at Hideaway. The hotel was great and the owners were very hospitable. We arrived at midnight and had a little bit of a challenge finding the little road it's on, but found it nonetheless.

The grounds are covered in gorgeous plants and we saw quite a few lizards. The pool on property is nice if you want a break from the beach.

We watched sunset from the beach which is only a one minute walk away.

The hotel is very small and you get to know the others staying there which was great for us, and just an FYI if that is not your thing. Breakfast comes with your hotel stay which is nice! The little restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, too!

Loved our stay! Would definitely recommend if you are headed to this part of Costa Rica!

Wonderful hidden hotel that lacks for nothing! We came to Playa Samara to fish and thought the Hideaway would just be a nice little place to hangout. We were all quite surprised to find out how great it really was. Rosie and Doug were so great and helpful. We enjoyed the food and especially the ice cream. The kids ate all the strawberry. Doug makes it himself. They also cooked our fish that we caught and we licked our plates cleaned. We had planned to eat at some of the restaurants in Samara but always came back to the hotel to eat. The tuna burger is very good to. We were awaken by the wonderful sounds of birds and howler monkeys. The boys loved looking at the iguanas that roamed around the property. I would reccommend this hotel to anyone. I hope that we get to come back down and visit.

I had a fantastic time at the hideaway hotel. It is clean, new and lovely. The owners are welcoming and ever present with suggestions about things to do in the area. The breakfast was delicious. I ate 3 dinners at the hotel and they were all great - lots of non meat options too!
Other guests were friendly and I felt it was a comfortable place to meet new people and share a meal with them.
I highly recommend the Hotel Hideaway and hope I can come back again.

We had an absolutely superb 6 day experience at the Hotel Hideaway. As a couple enjoying a mid-winter getaway seeking adventure, long walks and easy access to activities, we loved our stay. Room was crisp & clean & cool (with A/C and fan) and attractively furnished with great walk-in shower, secure safe for valuables, phone and at least 20 channels of international cable TV for "vegging out" a few times. The staff were all consistently charming and helpful. The breakfast (included with room charge) was so fresh and delicious. One of the best surprises was the restaurant for dinner. Served right next to the pool, the menu had lots of choices...and was very inexpensive (never more than $40 for the two of us, usually closer to $30 when we ate lighter). Try something with the mango or pineapple salsa....and don't forget the brownie with their homemade ice cream (coconut and mint w/ chocolate chip were our favorites)...and my wife says to have the filet with gorgonzola cheese...and the coconut chicken and the bruschetta. Obviously, we're fans. The only thing we'd do differently next time is perhaps rent a moto-scooter to get back-n-forth to the town center (we went to school for Spanish language each day...while the taxi was only $6 US each way and the morning was was do-able before the sun got too high, a scooter might have been fun.) The animals were a hoot! Say hi to the iguanas (not scary at all) and the howler monkeys for us.
