“What a find!”

Beautiful location. Attentive and delightful staff. Clean rooms with beautiful views. Great food from the restaurant. Maybe the best beaches I have ever seen for swimming and body surfing. I only wish we had more time to stay at the Hideaway!

My husband and I recently vacationed in Costa Rica for 16 days. Travelled around quite a bit to different areas but ended our vacation by spending the last 5 nights at the Hideaway. Great way to end our holiday in this peaceful, beautiful setting. The room was spacious, bright and clean. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The menu was extensive and very well-prepared. Doug & Rosie were great hosts and made some very helpful recommendations. The location is so close to Samara Beach with the most spectacular sunsets ever. By car, you are 2 min. to Playa Carillo - beautiful, secluded beach... take a cooler and you are good for the day. We loved Samara and would go back in a heartbeat. Thanks to all that made our stay at the Hideaway so memorable!

My cousin and I were planning on staying one night in Playa Samara. Just a quick stop, and then on to another spot. Three days later, we found it difficult to leave the beautiful, comfortable, and casual digs that Doug and Rosie preside over. The Hideaway is a small boutique hotel, with large rooms, all clean and nicely adorned, with a small pool and restaurant on the premises. The food is quite good (with delicious homemade ice-cream to boot). The best part for me was the vibe. It feels completely casual. Almost like you're staying in a guesthouse at your friend's fancy compound. At the same time, the staff does an incredible job of always being there when you need something, without ever pressuring you when you just want to relax.

The beach is just a one minute walk down a dirt road, and is very quiet and peaceful. It definitely helps to have a car if you want to get into town, as it's about a 40 minute walk otherwise. But if you're traveling around Costa Rica, well, you should be doing it by car. The town itself is a fun little beach community. It too has a relaxed, laid-back vibe, with a good number of bars and restaurants. If you're looking to escape the hordes of tourists, this is a great place to visit.

And again, Doug's the man.

Our recent stay at the Hideaway Inn was superb! Our room was comfortably sized, with a beautiful bathroom and nice decor. We even had a friendly iguana, Larry, who greeted us near poolside as we sipped our delicious margueritas. Doug and Rosie and their staff were truly delightful hosts and quite helpful in setting up tours nearby and giving recommendations for dining. The hotel is a short walk to the beach and on the quiet end of Samara. It is a short drive (if you rented a car) or a 45 minute walk to the town for dining options and tour activities The only downside we could think of is that the WiFi did not reach the farthest rooms. We had to go to the common areas for wireless access. The hotel is definitely the nicest one in Playa Samara and an excellent value.

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights on our honeymoon, and loved every minute.

The service was very friendly and the owners take an active roll in the operation, in a very good way. They were very welcoming and all of their recommendations were great.

When we checked in, the mango margaritas were recommended as the 'best in the world' and I have no reason to disagree. They are perfect on a hot afternoon. Breakfast was great, and there were several options and a nice plate of fresh fruit. I assume the home-made ice cream and brownies are great, although I didn't try them.

The location is tucked down a little dirt road mid-way between the main road and the beach. It is actually not in the main "downtown" (hah, 2 blocks by 4 blocks) and is a bit south. This was ideal for us, because we could easily enjoy all of the bars and restaurants in town, but could get away from the noise and action when we wanted. A 5 minute (at most) drive, or a $6 cab ride from middle of town. The sunset is much better at this end of the beach than down near town, because it is over the water instead of over the rocky outcrop. It is also a 7-10 minute walk to Carillo beach, which is unspeakably beautiful and unspoiled.

We would definitely go back. Room 12 has the most private entrance, for you honeymooners.

Room Tip: 12 is secluded, all are nice.

Stayed with Doug and Rosie for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The rooms are large, bright and clean. The beach is literally two minutes walk away. The food served is superb, whether its breakfast lunch or dinner. The staff is friendly and relaxed and will help you organize any trips you are interested in. Kid friendly pool is great to relax in and cool off. Visit the local animal refuge for a close-up experience of a sloth, toucan, alligator and other animals.
Would definitely recommend, and hope to be back soon, to hear the howler monkeys again!!

This was our first time to Samara (my wife and I traveled here from Los Angeles, CA). We stayed a few days at another property, then a few days at the Hideaway. We're a 30 yo married couple, who have travelled quite a bit, and generally stay in mid-upper scale places.

The Hideaway has so many things going for it, and as far as we saw, no negatives! We arrived, were greeted by English speaking staff, and sat and enjoyed a cocktail while waiting for the rain to subside a bit.

Here are a few of the things we appreciated during our stay:
-The owners are there frequently, and personally sat to chat with my wife and I, giving us recommendations, making sure we were taken care of, knew the lay of the land, etc.
-The room we stayed in was cool (air conditioned), bug-free (amazing in Samara), and felt modern and comfortable. No 'roughing it' here whatsoever. Bathroom was clean and updated, bed was comfortable. You may think these are 'normal' things to expect in a hotel room, but not in Samara. Most places we found had very sub-par accommodations, so when we got here, we both breathed a sigh of relief, and felt the wave of relaxation come over us.
-The staff was super helpful, pointing us in the directions we needed. Even let us hose off our car in their driveway after we did some 'adventuring.'
-The monkees just off-site were great to hear and see on our drive in/out each morning (they're up in the trees).
-The property had a good use of space and plant life separating each building on-site, so you never felt like someone was in your space. It was quiet and peaceful. No clamor or noise to bother you.
-We could see brilliant orange/purple crabs in the lava rock walls outside our window below. Really fun to watch them scatter when the rains came and went.
-The property was outside of town, but not so far that it was a hassle to get there. It was actually really nice to not be in 'the middle of things' and have the quiet of the 'outskirts' of town. The drive in to town was tropical and tree-lined, very pretty.
-It is very obvious that the owners take pride in this property, and treat it as their home. We got to hear their story of how they came to live here, and were impressed that they put so much effort into maintaining and upgrading this property so their guests can be as happy as they are.

Overall, and in a nutshell, my wife and I really felt like personal guests here, not just tourists coming through and staying. We felt comfortable, and welcomed, and can't wait to return.
