“Right on the beach, stayed here 3 nights and won't stay there again”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2013

Why I'm giving this hotel a 3 instead of a 2 when I say that I won't be back?

Location location location as they are right by the ocean.

Initial impression was awesome as the first thing that they give you when you arrive is fruit drinks with ice.

We hated having to wear bracelets our entire 3 day stay. All guests are required to wear plastic bracelets like you get when you're in the hospital.

The rooms (#510 and #503) at first looked awesome. Later things started to bother us such as the bedroom has no windows and so one has to have the lights on in order to see. Also no screens at all and so if one doesn't want bugs one has to keep the doors closed. Which means the air conditioner has to be on. The lights and air conditioner controls takes a lot of learning as it's not simply on/off.

Worst of all is that the electricity went out for about 8 hours.

No backup generators like most quality hotels would have!!!! TERRIBLE!

To top it off when the electricity went off we also had no water at all!

They didn't have a back up generator for the well! It took at least 6 hours before we finally got water.

The wait staff at the restaurant (nice location) were all very nice, the set ups were nice, however we all felt that the food was mediocre.

The pool was dirty all three days. Our rooms were close to the pool which normally would be great however all three days there were lots of what appeared to be local kids hanging out at the pool and it was very loud during the day.

Not many beach chairs provided and the only thing that the hotel offered was the rental of a kayak. One kayak and that was it for the entire hotel.

Need a Costa Rican stamp to mail a postcard? The front desk suggested that we go to the hotel next door to buy one (which we did and that's where we'll stay next time).

Need a float or anything at all for the beach? The front desk suggested that we go buy all at the Supermercado which is 2 km away. For $10. the hotel staff can take you there.

Maintenance issues were obvious such as the toilet seat was loose and sloppy. The plumbing when the hotel was built wasn't done right as sometimes our sink drain would make noises which is caused by improper venting which is potentially a heal;th hazard. The p-trap under the sink had leaked previously and rather than replacing it they threw on some goop which means it will leak again in the future.

This is a quiet, very nice resort. The restaurant was deserted but had exceptional food. You have to eat their surf and turf at least once during your stay.

Our only complaint was that our room needed about $250 of repairs to make it really up to par. There was a cracked light switch cover, etc.

The howler monkey over the pool late one night was definitely a highlight.

This is a lovely resort on the Pacific Ocean. The staff is exceptioal, the food is good, everything is spotless, the rooms are spacious and the views are perfect. It's not to be missed. The beach is very clean-a few shells and enough wave action to be pleasant fun. It's ideal for children.

We splurged on an ocean view room and it was totally worth it. We were right on the beach with a big balcony and hot tub. The beach was ideal with warm, shallow water that you could wade it for hours. Very few waves or rocks. Service was great and the food was tasty, not as good as Gingers restaurant, but better than most. Definitely the highlight of our trip.

Room Tip: Splurge on the Ocean view. It really should be called Ocean Front.

Places for Breakfast in Coco and Hermosa that are good value and in a great location are sadly lacking. This hotel restaurant meets both of those criteria: c5000 a head for a buffet breakfast on the beach in a very nice restaurant; attentive wait staff, plenty of fruit and granola as well as the usual cooked breakfast and waffles. (NB they told us that they only have buffet when the hotel is full)

Visited 3 nights at end of week trip to Costa Rica. Great oceanfront suite, staff and meals. Quiet beach. Monkees over the pool were entertaining but keep the staff busy cleaning. Had good massage in room. Would definately recommend and stay here again.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2012

Just got back from a one night stay at Hotel Playa Hermosa, where we stayed the night before leaving Costa Rica via Liberia airport. The hotel is very conveniently located to the airport (approx 25 mins away), and is definitely a step above the Hilton Garden Inn if you prefer to spend your first or last night in Costa Rica on the beach, rather than staring out the window at the runway.

Once we arrived in Playa Hermosa, we found the grounds to be small but well kept, and the rooms to be very nice. We stayed in a beach front suite where we appreciated the view and proximity to the ocean, and loved hearing the sound of crashing waves at night. We were a little disappointed with the pool (totally in the shade for 100% of the day so not good for sunbathing) as well as the surrounding town (not much going on, though this could be seasonal since we stayed in low season). We found the food at the restaurant to be just average -- not inedible but not quite up to par with most of the other dining experiences we had in Costa Rica. Also, even there is supposedly WIFI in the common areas, we were never able to connect to it.

Where this hotel fell short for us, however, was the service. More often than not, we found ourselves standing in an empty bar for 10 minutes waiting for a bartender or trying to find a server to bring more coffee for long empty cups. Overall, I would attribute this not to the lack of helpfulness of the staff, but simply to the fact that there was not enough staff to cater to all of the guests. What made this even more frustrating on the second day of our stay was that there was a child's birthday party on the hotel grounds. While we could barely get service, the staff was bending over backwards to serve the party, which pretty much took over both the beach and the pool and was comprised of locals who were not staying at the hotel.

Overall, I think the hotel was fine for what we used it for -- a one night airport stay -- but I would not recommend it to someone who were coming for an extended stay simply because there are many hotels in Costa Rica that offer far better service for the same price.
