“Bosque Del Mar”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

We didn't reach Playa Hermosa until 10pm Saturday night and had yet to have eaten anything but ice cubes, gratis our friends at United however, on arrival at Bosque Del Mar we were greeted with fruit smoothies, refreshing face towels and Esteban and Carlos who put in our afterhours dinner order then escorted us with our bags in tow to our 2nd story suite. After great presentation and instruction to the functionality of our room we returned to the dining area for our late night dinner. We could hear the waves crashing as we ate our Mahi Mahi and Red Snapper entrees. The next morning we were able to enjoy the torrential downpour from our Jacuzzi. As the rain ceased we saw dozens of monkeys swinging through the trees. We appreciated the hard work of the beach maintenance guy, he spent hours digging runoff ditches, raking leaves and fetching lounge chairs for guests. We give this place a good rating because we enjoyed the atmosphere, the customer service and location. We did not give it five stars because we thought the house keeping could have been more detailed (there was still sand on the counter and on the floor after each days' cleaning) and the food, although decent was not noteworthy.

Room Tip: 2nd floor ocean view deluxe suite is significantly better than the Jr. suite, which we got on our re...

This is by far the best gem in guanacaste. The chef has his own farm and raises real beef cattle not brahman. The beef and seafood dishes are great. The tenderloin with blackberry and coconut sauce is to die for. It is a little hard to find. It is at the secondary entrance and you have to park across the street. It has a very diverse and complete menu. The staff at the restaurant and hotel are very attentive.

By the end of our trip in Costa Rica we ended at the Bosque Del Mar Hotel. We had a garden view room and it was huge with a bedroom and separate sitting room with two tvs. The beach is just steps away and is very secluded from any other big resorts or hotels which we loved. The hotel had one restaurant downstairs and a bar upstairs that had happy our which we tried to make every night. The restaurant downstairs was not my favorite. It seemed a bit expensive for lunch and dinner and nothing we had was absolutely amazing, it was just okay. If you walk up the street (about a 15 min. walk) there are a few restaurants including an pizza place that is worth checking out. There is also a mini grocery store where you can stock up on food and beverages for a very reasonable price. We did the paddle boarding through the hotel and it was very fun and entertaining. We also signed up the the city cultural tour which was a complete waste of money. DO NOT DO THIS TOUR. We specially asked the hotel if our tour guide would speak english and they said yes of course. Once we got in the van it was clear he only knew a few words. He basically took us to a pottery stand and then dropped us off in the middle of the city and gave us an hour to walk around. There was no tour and we didn't really learn anything about the culture or the town. Very disappointing for how much we spent for the tour. All in all it was a great hotel and if we are back in costa rica we would stop there again.

Room Tip: garden view

Out of our three week vacation in Panama and Costa Rica this was by far my favorite hotel. The location is great because it is the only hotel on the beach. All of the other surrounding buildings are residences and timeshares which means you have the beach to yourself. Every evening and morning we took a nice long stroll along the beach, it felt very safe, there are a lot of locals out walking their dogs or exercising. The hotel is also within driving distance to CoCo beach, which I thought was a little too much like the Pacific beaches in Mexico for my taste and after one quick stop there we didn't return.

We stayed in a garden view suite facing the pool area, which was really nice and quiet since the hotel is not large. I also really liked the style of this hotel. It feels very much like a boutique hotel with all the charm of a local inn. The architecture was very Costa Rican, and it had a bit of a modern edgy feel. Our room had both an indoor and outdoor seating area, which is great because sometimes it’s nice to relax inside with the ac. The bedroom was large, the tv was a little dated, but honestly we barely watched it.

I cannot give enough praise to the staff. They are amazing, they are so kind and welcoming. They are always willing to chat with you or recommend places to go and things to see. They specifically do not direct you to only the touristy spots and places but listen to what you are looking for and then recommend. They are also very knowledgeable about the other areas of Costa Rica, we were having trouble finding our next hotel on the gps and they were able to find it for us easily. The manager seemed to always be on site, always greeted us, always very courteous. The place was well taken care of, the beach furniture always stacked in the evening and wiped down in the morning etc.

The restaurant was WONDERFUL. I don’t know why anyone would eat anywhere else. The prices were very reasonable, about $15 for a Costa Rican beef filet minon dinner. Happy hour is great with wine for about $3.50 a glass. My husband had Red Snapper one evening which he said was the best fish he had ever had. It was huge, fresh from the ocean, cooked to perfection with a butter sauce.
We did the jet ski tour through the hotel, which frankly was probably the animal highlight of our trip. It lasted about 2 hours and we were able to see all the surrounding beaches and caves, snorkel a little, check out monkey island, and then we went out into the ocean and got to see whales only ten feet away and mating green sea turtles right up close. Again I was impressed that the guide/staff asked us what we wanted to see and then actually catered our tour to our interests.

The hotel also has sea kayaks for rent at a very reasonable rate, and there are a lot of different coves and inlets around that you can explore using these.

We were there for three nights, and didn’t want to leave. There is so much to do there if you want to be active, and if you don’t the beach is just steps from your door and you can relax all day long. We will definitely be back!

Let me say that we are not too particular. My wife and I are nurses and deal with the public regularly. We stayed here the first week in October for 4 nights. We had arrived with 3 little ones and my mother. The front desk receptionist William was quite rude and not at all friendly. I asked for a cart for luggage and he looked up and said "no cart". They should find him a job in the back somewhere else, because he never got any friendlier the whole time we were there. The room was nice but my mother's room had no air working and she ended up moving 3 times. The beach ws beautiful and private. The chairs were very uncomfortable and dirty. We had to wipe them down every day. Not many vendors on the beach and the sunsets were great. There were howler monkeys one day in the trees on the beach.
We wanted to see the sea turtles but it was $100 for each person at Playa Grande. We instead booke a taxi shuttle with the hotel for $180 and said we would pay our entry for the turtles. We were ready to go and the morining of I mentioned our trip to Warren the manager. Later the day the front desk called and said our trip was cancelled because the parks were closed. Then Warren approached us and said he was sorry but there was a problem with transportation. The whole thing was shady. Nedeless to say we did not see turtles. We did however book a trip to Palo Verde Park for the river tour which was fabulous and included lunch.
Marcello the hotel regular driver was excellent and friendly. Carlos the waiter and all the kitchen satff were very nice.
The room hot tub took an hour to fill and was not at all private as people on the beach could see you in your tub. The AC in the room was many times not working. Above our room they were stripping the door and railings and staining the deck above us. There was noise all the time and trash from the work many times in front of our door.
I would most likely go somewhere else.in the future and was a little disappointed with Bosque del Mar.

This is a beautiful hotel; the room was gorgeous with a lovely balcony and seating area. The hotel staff were very friendly and happy to advise about day trips. Right on the beach, as well as having a good sized and comfortable pool area. Perfect location for a relaxing and quiet beach holiday, whilst being in close proximity to other local restaurants.

I have stayed here several times and I always feel great when I do. There is something about this location in the trees, sitting right on the beach that energizes me. It also doesn't hurt that it has breathtaking sunsets, sailing, scuba diving & adventure tours, all the things I love. Add that to the wonderful food, lots of friends in the area, family owners & excellent staff and it's a no brainer.

Room Tip: Three classes of suites, Jr. Suite, Garden Suite and Beach Front, all are good but you can't bea...
