“Loved It!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2006

We had an excellent time at this hotel. Costa Rica was everything we had hoped it would be, there is nothing negative I can say about our trip. The Villas Sol was located in the middle of lush trees and about a 5 minute walk to the beach. The hotel rooms were decent, food was good, view from our balcony was spectacular, day trips were great.

We stayed for one week around Thanksgiving 2006. In general, the hotel room was clean and cool, and the staff friendly and helpful (especially if you make the effort to speak even just a little broken Spanish). Prior to going, I was concerned after reading some of the negative reviews on this site. After arriving I began to feel that many of the negative reviews of this hotel and resort are a case of unrealistic expectations. We're not really the all-inclusive type, we didn't do the all-inclusive, nor would we recommend it. You can walk down the Playa Hermosa community right off the beach and eat for much less money at a few local of the local sodas (get the latest Lonely Planet guide). Also go into Playa del Coco (a short 4 km drive to the south) for more eating options. Playa Hermosa as a beach itself is one of the nicer beaches in the area in comparison with Playa del Coco or Ocotal.

If you'd like to do day-trips to other parts of Guanacaste I would highly recommend renting a 4WD vehicle (most of the major car rental outfits have stations near LIR but call ahead to get better prices) or using one of the two travel services with boothes on the first floor of the hotel (Swiss Travel or TAM). HOWEVER, beware that these groups are known to cancel these trips without warning if they don't have a minimum number who have signed up and paid... be very firm in asking how many people are already signed up for trips. Also, be prepared to be approached by people who want you to take the tour of the Villas.

Also, a tip when leaving the country: you'll have to pay an exit fee at the airport of $26 US per person and they only take Visa and cash. On Visa this transaction shows up as a cash advance. Give yourself an extra 30 minutes for this process and bring a pen!

Overall we had a wonderful stay, we loved Costa Rica and would definitely stay at Villa Sol again. If you go wtih the attitude that you're going to Costa Rica to see Costa Rica you'll love it... if you want a super nice resort with all the amenities and everything you'd ever need right there at the resort, go to Cancun. Pura vida!

This resort is supposed to be an RCI Gold Crown, clearly RCI has never gone inside. We had a room in the hotel. You could tell they just got new curtains, bedspreads, furniture and paint. They picked the most depressing brown tropical print fabric. The floor tiles were old, chipped and had stains, the room itself was alright. The bathroom made up for it in a big way. The grout had been "stained" with some sort of orange stuff. It was coming off around the tub area which was a mixture of white grout and black mold. We ran only the hot water and the water would come out warm, probably some sort of water conservation measure, you tend to use less water when your freezing. They would mop the dirt around each day, make the bed and take out the trash. The room just always felt dirty and the bathroom was plan nasty. We loved the reccommended local restaurants Ginger, Finesseria, El Velero. The pool and the grounds were very nice, well kept and beautiful views. The staff was very nice and we did not get pressured into the timeshare thing. Didn't like the beach, it was shared with another resort and it just wasn't very pleasant. We actually left the resort for a couple of days and went to Arenal/Tabacon Resort which was amazing. I would not go back to this resort. I would try a different area of Costa Rica.

My wife, 11 yr.old son, and I stayed at Villa Sol in mid-September 2006, and enjoyed ourselves very much. We stayed in the hotel section of the resort, which consisted of an average (Days Inn) room. Contrary to other reviews our fridge was stocked the day after check-in and was replenished everyday. The view from the balcony was amazing, especially the sunsets. Staff was very friendly, and responsive to any request we had. The food was pretty good, some nights better than others, but overall pretty good. Breakfast was the best with made to order omelets and belgian waffles every morning. We found the activities at the resort to be good as well. We took the boat trip one morning and went snorkeling another. My son and I got into the pool volleyball every afternoon we weren't away on a tour. Really, we had no complaints at all about the resort. The resort really was just a jump-off place, the real fun was the tours. We took the full-day tour that included the rain forest, hot springs, and Arenal volcano. It was a long bumpy ride, but we had a great time. You simply can't go to Coasta Rica and skip the Canopy Tour. My wife, who is no fan of heights, even thought it was fun and would do it again. We went to the Congo Canopy Tour that included a reptile, bird, and monkey exhibit. If you ask, they will let you in the cage with the monkeys (not for everyone, but my son loved it, and the bite has not made him foam at the mouth yet). Finally, we took the riverboat tour. If you want to see wildlife, this is your ticket. The tour lasted about 2 1/2 hours and we saw crocs., iguana, howler and white-faced monkeys, and all kinds of birds. My son and I also spent quite a bit of time on the beach, which was clean with decent medium sized waves. All in all, we found Villa Sol to be comfortable, quiet, and friendly. In fact, I was ready to set-up shop and stay down there. Oh, get the vacation points sales pitch out of the way the first day, then they leave you alone the rest of the time you are there.

  • Liked — Quiet atmosphere, convenient amenities, available activities on and off site
  • Disliked — Vacation Points Sales
  • Tips/Secrets — Make friends with other guests and do activities together to make enough participants

We stayed at the hotel and not the villas. The other reviews are pretty factual. Great views, average room, average cleanliness and amenities. The rooms show their age. Safety is good.

The food is at best satisfactory.. The restaraunt staff is very good. Breakfast is the best, lunch next and then dinner. The bar staff is good.

The second restaruant is better, but as previous reviews state, not open all the time. The quick food at the pool bar is not worth the calories.

The two pools are fine.

The hotel activities are a disappointment. We had the same experience with them cancelling the trips or tours without adequate explanation.

We still had a great time in Costa Rica. This place is a fine place to stay as long as you don't expect world class accomodations and food. The location is great and the country and people are fantastic.
