“Decent place for the price you pay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2014

The staff are friendly and the scenery is very beautiful! The beach is just a short shuttle ride away, and the shuttle comes around often enough. The hotel is situated on a hill, so if you have difficulty walking long distances, and prefer not to wait on a shuttle, try to get a room by the main building and buffet restaurant. There are a few day time events during the day (beer pong, aqua aerobics, pool volleyball, etc) and some night time things (poker night, dancing). It's not a place for young people who are just looking to party. You'd have to go into Coco beach to do that (it's a $10 USD shuttle from the hotel including return). You can also do a bit of shopping at Coco beach for cheaper prices than the hotel. The food is just okay. If you're a very picky eater, you may not enjoy eating here. There's always plenty of meat options (beef, pork, fish and chicken), some kind of rice, beans and vegetables. For breakfast, there are no fresh egg options (omelettes, fried eggs) like I've experienced at other resorts but there were scrambled eggs. They could have been cooked a bit longer...as they were a bit runny. There was bacon served for ONE breakfast....every other day it was small wiener/sausage type things. The a la carte option was delicious and you get to eat here twice during your stay. I had the steak which was AMAZING and my friends had the salmon and mahi mahi, which they enjoyed. The servers, bartenders and front desk work very hard and are eager to help you out with whatever you need. Overall, I'm glad I went, because it was Costa Rica!! I'd recommend this to someone who isn't too picky and is looking for something decent at a reasonable price.

Room Tip: Rooms are located on a hill so try to stay in the main building for easier access to everything.

My family and I had extremely bad experience with this place. We paid for renovated 1 bedroom villa, but they gave us very old, dirty with very bad smell, old furniture, with broken air conditioner, broken blinds villa. When we asked for a different place and said that we paid for renovated, the management said they do not have any other place, while we witnessed them placing other people in better villas. The air conditioner and blinds were fixed only on third day. They put us in a cheaper hotel room after 3 days but refused to give us credit, very unfriendly, very bad place. It was our first time in the country, will never go back... Very disappointed, we lost money, had very bad vacation because of the management of this place...

My husband and I stayed a week in early April. The hotels staff did the miniminal required, never going out of their way, especially the front desk. We had booked an excursion through the company on site and the front desk never passed on the message that the fellow had called to say he would be late, so we waited over half an hour. To top it off, the tour guide Daniel (who also drove that day as we asked for a private tour) rear ended a money truck because he was driving like a bloody idiot in construction to make up for his tardiness. The company said they would re-imburse us but never did. Food was ok at the restaurant. The A-la carte restaurant is not open every night, so it is best to reserve asap.
We did a couples massage at the on-site salon which I highly recommend. The view on the bay is breath taking.

It's a nice all inclusive resort, but not the best. Built on a hill, the beach is either a steep hike from the hotel or a shuttle bus ride. When we were there the beach and the resort was quite crowded. The restaurant's food was good, tending toward more local fare, which was nice. There was no wi-fi, but there was a TV in the room.

Room Tip: Stick with the white wine or beer, the liquor is so watered down and the red was terrible.

A great place to stay & play. One of the workers - Daniel Cruz was amazing! Great worker & made us feel right at home!! The resort has transportation readily available & many excursions you can book through the hotel. We did sunset snorkeling cruise, Nicaragua day tour, & river boat cruise. All 3 were excellent.

We had one of the hotel rooms with a small balcony - very nice. The all inclusive restaurant was good. Bar did not open until 10 a.m. So no bloody marys or mimosas with breakfast. Because the hotel is situated on the side of the hill, the shuttle service to and from the beach was appreciated. Wi Fi was NOT included...so that was a negative. The concierge was wonderful and really helped us resolve an issue we had when we needed to cancel another excursion. The beach was nice with some good snorkeling. This time of the year there were lots of tiny jelly fish. Suggest bringing a long sleeve shirt to swim in. The stings were more annoying than anything; however, the next day they felt and looked like mosquito bites. Beautiful sunset view from the outdoor bar next to the restaurant.

Room Tip: The hotel requires that you climb stairs. So if you have any difficulty, make sure to get one of the...

STAFF: All of the staff were fantastic and very accommodating. One of the concierges, GILBERT, was especially helpful and kind to us. He happened to ride the hotel shuttle into Coco Beach with us and he visited with us on the ride. We saw him again in the town market with his children and he stopped to say hi and introduce us. How many hotel staff have you met that are that friendly and considerate?

ROOM: We stayed at the main hotel, which was very convenient to everything there and also had a fabulous balcony view of the ocean and beach. The room would have been near perfect if only we could have moved some air somehow; we asked for a fan but they didn't have any. The AC in the room doesn't "blow"...it just slowly dribbles a little cool air out. The restaurants and most of the public spaces are open air. Fortunately most of them have ceiling fans and there is usually a breeze blowing. The ice maker was broken so we tipped the bartender to give us ice for our room. We didn't have any trouble at all getting a reservation for the Helliconias restaurant.

TO DO: The beach has black sand and a mild surf. The water temperature was cooler than the Gulf of Mexico and was perfect for just bobbing in the waves. If you want to relax, so to the hotel's Paradise Spa for a "Paradise Massage" which is a medium intensity massage, in between a Swedish and a Deep Tissue massage (both also offered).

FOOD: The daily 3 free meals at the Bahia restaurant were nutritious and clean. Costa Rica is famous for recycling and you could definitely see that in their food. For example, black beans and hard boiled eggs left over from breakfast and the previous evening's supper showed up in the next day's black bean soup. One thing most Americans may miss is good old fashioned cheese. They only have queso fresco and it's so bland I thought it was tofu the first two days! No cheddar, no swiss, no American, no "normal" cheese at any time. Otherwise the bland, fresh food actually reminded me a bit of New England food. We never got an edible dessert anywhere while in Costa Rica...so strange...somebody needs to show those poor people how to make a brownie or a chocolate chip cookie! All the desserts were mealy and kind of mushy, whether it was cake or some sort of pudding or gel and they all had nutmeg and cinnamon or allspice...again, just like New England.

THE TIMESHARE PITCH: Our all-inclusive stay required us to attend a 90 minute timeshare presentation. Our salesman, Gil, was very friendly and did a wonderful job of explaining the different opportunities. Even though we didn't buy anything, we saw him later at the restaurant and he was friendly and happy to see us. Yes, of course they'd like for you to buy a timeshare...that's why they paid for your stay...but our timeshare presentation was still enjoyable, and we asked so many questions, we caused it to last beyond the required time. Gil even told us a lot about Costa Rica that we found very interesting and educational.

OVERALL: this was a very nice place to visit for a quiet few days. Without a car, your options are pretty limited though and we were getting cabin fever by the end of 3 days. You have to pay dearly for any transport outside of the resort...$60 to go into Liberia if you want to shop. Only $10 for the shuttle to the tourist traps at Coco Beach, but expect to pay about $20 for a cheap tee shirt there. Excursions begin at around $90 per person.

Room Tip: The hotel is the most centrally located and easiest place to get around from.
