“Lovely”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2012

We found the hotel rooms to be clean and comfortable and modern. The safe in both our rooms did not work and even though we requested they be fixed, it didn't happen. The food was fine, not outstanding, but lots of choice. The weekends were very busy with local vacationers so things got a bit picked over. It is a very family friendly hotel and resort, so lots of kids around. We were there early April and were told it was "red tide" time and not to go in the water. This was disappointing. The beach was smelly. Overall the resort is comfortable, the staff friendly and the scenery beautiful. Was a great location from which to see Costa Rica.

Room Tip: Stay in the hotel as villas are way up the steep hill.

Villas Sol is a hotel, but their main business is a time share resort. We went on a specially priced deal and stayed at the hotel. We weren't required to sit though the time share pitch, but it was always there in the background.

The rooms in the hotel were very nice but not luxurious and the beds were VERY HARD. The side of the hotel we were on had views of the beach and the "quite pool" and we had some amazing sunsets.

Our room prices were all inclusive so we never had to bring out our wallet once. The food in the main restaurant was always served buffet style but was surprisingly good. You can also have "snacks" at the activity (loud) pool which were average at best. The drinks were plentiful but they seemed a bit watered down, and there were no name brand alcohols (not even if you paid extra).

The grounds were clean and well kept. The beach was nice, and wasn't full of hockers, and the water was warm.

Overall it was a very pleasant stay, but I'm not sure I'd stay in this region again. I think I'd go back south to the Manuel Antonio / Quepos area. While it's more touristy, there are more things to do, more good restaurants, and a much nicer beach.

Room Tip: If you're staying in the hotel, make sure you get a room that has the ocean view. While they all...

This is not a bad place. But be aware of what they offer, and if it fits what you want!
Villas Sol is located on a hill. You can stay in the main hotel, or you may get a room up in the "villas". The shuttles run up and down the hill all day... and they should actually charge for that ride - as it's amazing the slope of that hill and the ride you will get. We told people who were staying in the hotel to take the shuttle because it's really a fun ride!
The view from most of the villas is good - but not much to see from the rooms in the main hotel.

The pools are OK (there are 2) but we didn't spend any time there.
The restaurant is OK - and the food was actually good, but the selection was very limited.
I had read this in other reviews prior to going - and they were right.

Overall, the place wasn't too bad - but I give it 2 or 3 stars. This is NOT a 4 star resort - no way, no how. Those that think so need to get out more (ha). Very, very average.
But the staff was polite and friendly. Certainly not somewhere to avoid, but not a jewel.

The sunset from the main bar (very small) was a highlight of the evenings, but again, the bar is very small. Seating was limited and service insufficient to service more than a handful of guests.

Lastly, the beach... The sand here is not white - it's black volcanic (lots of volanos in Costa Rica). The snorkeling can be good here, but not during our stay - read below. And the beach is actually on another hotel property - so you will not have any services down there. The competing property will allow you to pay cash, tho. The beach had some sections with lawn chairs - and it was very nice for some quiet time, if that's your goal.

My daughter and I booked this hotel throught he PADI Travel Network - with the intent of scuba diving near here. If you plan to do the same, think again, because the diving was with Ocotal Resort - and the taxi fare was $30. (Yes, each way). It seems that NYC taxi fare rates are pretty common in Costa Rica.

Also, winds were terribly high during our visit - and they had "morena roja" - or red tide during our visit. Visibility was so bad at 75 feet that I logged it as a night dive (ha). I have heard that the diving there is really good - but our luck was not. Ah, so goes it when you travel.

Overall, it's a small resort, relatively remote to anywhere. Rooms are OK, service OK, food was pretty good. Don't pay too much - don't expect any pizazz or night life. Great place to go get lost for a while or hide out. If you wanted more to do, consider staying in a hotel on Coco Beach - only a few minutes away. We went there twice ($20 cab fare each way) and it was more like a secluded Costa Rican villiage with shops, bars, restaurants, etc. But I wouldn't expect you would want to stay there for more than 2-3 days, either. Nothing was too cheap, there, either.

Room Tip: Main hotel if you want easy access - up in the villas if you want privacy and the view. But you wil...

We stayed here, via Groupon for a great price, for four days last week. I would echo the recommendations to stay in the Hotel (vice villa) and on the top floor. We had a wonderful 3rd floor king room. What can I say - all was very good. The staff was all very friendly, the place was secure and clean, the views - buffet and drinks were great and much welcomed. It is a timeshare (partial) facility and you have the option of attending a tour for $100/a free snorkle cruise or a free mini vacation but we were never pressured and did not tour. We would go back - it's a great place to kick back and relax.

Room Tip: Hotel & top floor for the best view and no upstairs noise.

Pros:
-Great buffet
- gorgeous view/sunset
-trips were all wonderful
Cons:
-Poor service, to find out about activities (which there were few) you had to track down an answer. There were no boogie boards or kayaks that we could track down.
- alcohol choices were mediocre at best
- transportation took forever
- too far from the beach
-expensive WiFi, go next door they only charge $1.50

If you are visiting Costa Rica during the dry season (Nov-April) keep in mind everything in Guanacaste and surrounding areas are brown. Not at all like the pics on the website. They are by no means vibrant and plush as we expected. Costa Rica is still beautiful besides this. The weather however was very nice. Outside of the resort this area is VERY expensive. Everyone expects to be tipped. The experience was very different from Caribbean all inclusive.

We decided to stay here after purchasing a groupon for the place. With it being so cheap I really lowered my expectations of everything but when we got there I was sooo impressed. Our villa was clean and nice and centered in between booth pools. We had parking out front which they didn't charge us, the room was large, and the A/C was great. We didn't have a great view but every day at a meal we could look at the ocean and the hills and that was fine by me. The staff is wonderful, esp. Adrian who always had a beer ready for us at the pool. I was very impressed but this place and thought it was a great place for couples and families. The food was pretty much the same after a while but there was always things we liked. We also ate at Ginger one night- so awesome. It's located right outside the hotel toward CoCo Beach. The location was nice too b/c its not far from the airport.
