“Loved the RipJack Inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2007

On a recommendation from our neighbour who had stayed at the RipJack Inn in February, we decided to travel to Costa Rica over the Easter week. We had such a great week at the RipJack Inn. The rooms were simple but clean, the food in the restaurant was extremely good with only the freshest ingredients and a great view of the Pacific Ocean. All the staff were helpful and friendly. We woke up early each morning to blue sky's to run/walk on the beach, or to do Yoga with Annie. The 3 mile long beach is minutes away and is great for swimming, surfing, walking and relaxing. We took surf lessons with Ian, who is a very patient teacher. Gregory was helpful with booking our transfer from the airport to the hotel and for any day trips we did. I am sure we will be back. It was sad to say goodbye as it felt like we had been at the RipJack Inn for more than 1 week. Thanks to Annie and Dave, Gregory, Ian and Corryne (who is a fantastic massage therapist) for making our first visit to Costa Rica a memorable one.

My family of 4, kids 9 and 12, stayed at the RipJack for 7 nights from April 3rd through 10th. We were pleased to find the property exactly as it was seen/described on the RipJack's own website and by other Trip Advisor reviewers, and can confirm that Gregory (our primary contact) and Annie and Dave are every bit as warm and weloming and accommodating as they were described to be by previous guests. The property is very pretty and well maintained and just steps away from a beautiful beach with great, huge waves that is great for surfing, and fun for swimming and just romping in the waves as well. The rooms are fairly basic, but they know what you need - a cool (excellent air conditioning which we quite appreciated after long days out in the heat), clean room with a firm, comfortable mattress and a simple, pleasant aesthetic. We stayed in room 7, a cabina room, where there was one queen and two twin beds. We were very comfortable (you can't unpack your things, no closet or dresser, but there's plenty of room for the suitcases). The rooms are cleaned, towels replaced and beds made daily. The restaurant is a great place to eat - very good food for a good value - and a great place to hang out and read a book, play cards, have a drink with locals and other guests, etc. It attracts people from all over the area. We totally enjoyed our stay there and would absolutely stay there again. It's hard to describe the the "metaphysical " aspects of the place that make it so special, but suffice it to say my kids and I cried all the way to the airport (which, btw, is only one hours drive from Playa Grande on a smoothe, freshly paved road!)!

  • Liked — intimate, relaxed vibe, great location
  • Disliked — I really have nothing negative to say about the Rip Jack. It is what it is and it's great.

The Rip Jack was perfect. It is on a beautiful nearly isolated beach located about 90 minutes from the Liberia airport. The staff, fluent in English, could not have been friendlier and more helpful. There is an open air restaurant upstairs and a handful of tidy rooms downstairs. The menu at the restaurant is varied and interesting and the food is well prepared and nicely presented -- easily comparable to what one would find in a trendy big city neighborhood. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and priced reasonably. The Rip Jack is unpretentious, but in a stylish way. It is funky without trying to be and sophisticated in its own "surferly" way. Again, it is ideal for someone interested in spending time on the beach away from the crowds and returning for meals at a restaurant that is likely to keep one's interest.

We loved the Rip Jack! The food was unbelievable. Generally I loose weight surfing in Costa Rica, but not this time...

Yoga two mornings a week was wonderful. The rooms are quaint, but you aren't there to sit in a room. Easy walk to the beach. Annie, Dave and Greg couldn't be more hospitable. We'll be back.

The RipJackInn was OUTSTANDING. We came from Pittsburgh PA and stayed at the RipJack during "rainy" season the week of July 17 2006 for our honeymoon. Coming from Pittsburgh where it rains all the time - we actually thought the rainy season was great. It really didn't rain that often and when it did - it would just downpour for a little and then the sun would come out. Temps in the mid 80's were normal at that time...so it was very nice. Everything was very green.

We honestly couldn't have enjoyed our stay there more.

We are both vegetarians and the staff, Brett, Annie, and Greg were more than accommodating! The restaurant is vegetarian friendly - you just have to let them know because they specialize in meat dishes. We ate at the restaurant most days and nights and it was great - we are very picky eaters and the food was just outstanding. We have so many good memories from this place...if you go get a 4x4 because the roads are bad with a lot of potholes. It is a real adventure getting to this place.

Also if you are going for your honeymoon - ask for a room like #7 which is outside of the main area - it is a little bit quieter. A lizard snuck into our room while I had the door open - which was my fault, but other than that the room was clean with NO bugs or anything like that. Bring a water bottle and there is plenty of times to fill up with their filtered water. I wish there was a mini refrigerator in the room. We took surfing lessons from their guide there who was very helpful and got Corinne up on the board in a few tries! It's a short walk to the beach from the hotel.

We also took day trips to see Arenal volcano (stayed overnight there) and a few other places around the area. Check out more of our honeymoon pictures on http://www.corinneandmike.com
This place was AMAZING I want to go back so bad!!

Playa Grande definately grew on us during the week that we stayed at the Rip Jack Inn. We quickly realized that the quiet, peacefulness of the place is what draws people here to visit and sometimes to live. The staff made us feel so welcome and always greeted us with a smile. Gregory was so sweet, he always made himself available for any questions that we had and made all of our tour and transportation arrangements with a smile! We ate most of our meals upstairs in the restaurant and were never unhappy with the food. The staff up there work very hard and are so kind, the night waiter Johnny would bring us our usual drinks when he saw us coming up for dinner. I miss sitting up there during happy hour watching the sunset!
We went into Tamarindo 2 times to shop and realized that it was too busy for us and only stayed a short time, the boat ride across the estuary was fun, you catch this from the Hotel Bula Bula.
On our walks back to the Rip Jack we would stop into the local restaurant Los Malinches and have a beer or go into the store right beside for some snacks.
The waves in Playa Grande are wonderful and the atmosphere is layed back and relaxed and this is exactly what we needed. If you are prepared to walk alot and enjoy nature and the beautiful surroundings than this is the place and hotel for you. We would love to bring our children back to the Rip Jack once they have all of the upgrades and construction done for a bigger place.
Thank you Gregory, Annie and all of your other wonderful staff for a great week, hope to see you again one day.
