“Accomodating Accomodation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

Las Tortugas is a quaint and affordable way to experience the northern beaches of Costa Rica's pacific coast. An escape from the hassle of Tamarindo and a pumping beach break as the immediate vista. You cannot get closer to the best peaks in Playa Grande.

Breakfast is affordable, while dinner tends to be more on the expensive side although some dishes may not put a dent in your wallet if you are to tired to walk to another restaurant. Carrie was absolutely the most accommodating to surfers and visitors on a budget. Definitely the best place to stay if you are looking to let your guard down and rip playful waves.

The hotel provides jobs for the immediate community, so you can rest assure that you are supporting the economy of this beach community and its surrounding area.

Room Tip: Talk to Carrie to get the best out of your stay

Hotel Las Tortugas is a surf motel. If you don't know what a surf motel is then you should not stay here. If you do then it is a great place that will grow on you by the end of your stay. Super casual atmosphere, nice staff, great food - but a little pricey. Would like to see the owners reinvest some of their profits into the place as it needs some updating. Window units are noisey, bedding/mattresses are oooooold, TV is ancient. Heard the apartments up the block are nicer - but 4 blocks away. Beautiful location.

This is our 3 rd visit at las tortugas and we are still amazed ... Beautiful beaches, incredible surf spot (SUPER CONSISTENT), amazing people and vibe.

This is a place for surfers and nature lovers.

We have introduced 3 couples of friends and they were all in love with this place.

See you soon again.

Pura Vida.

Hotel Las Tortugas is located on a really wonderful beach....that is, if you are looking for a very, very long and wide stretch of smooth sand, good surfing waves, and an unspoiled (for now) backdrop. If you want a fancy resort, lots of restaurants and bars, and many beach amenities, go somewhere else.

Las Tortugas makes sure they honor the rule of no lights shining on the beach for the sake of nesting turtles, so the rooms don't have a view of the ocean. Still, it is only a couple of steps out to the beach from the hotel's pool area. This area also has a number of comfy hammocks in the shade.

Although the hotel is rather small, the pool area often seemed rather crowded, as if a number of non-guests were using it. Still, that was mostly on the weekend, and they did have a guard posted on the grounds. In fact, because Playa Grande is such a small community, I also felt very safe.

Our room was fairly large and was the only hotel we stayed at in Costa Rica which had a king-size bed. There was a room safe which didn't work! They encouraged us to use the lobby safe and that worked out fine. The room had a small frig and coffee maker which were very useful, especially since, unlike most hotels in Costa Rica, breakfast was not included in the price.

The room also had AC, another uncommon amenity, and it worked very well. The shower, on the other hand, didn't work that well.

Typically, the hotel booked tours and we took the canoe tour of the estuary in the Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas. While I do recommend visitors to take a canoe into this Marine National Park, our tour was not well organized and the guide was unable to help us with our canoe since he was dealing with several other canoes which included children and other people equally incompetent as we were with the canoe. Furthermore, he wasn't in a position to point out much wildlife since we were in so many canoes. If you have a car, as we all did, you probably could just drive down to the Hotel Bula Bula yourself and arrange your own canoe rental.

Even though the hotel had its faults, given its location, I would still highly recommend visitors to Costa Rica to check it out.

We stayed at Las Tortugas 12 years ago and loved it. When we moved back to Costa Rica we couldn't wait to go back. We spend the Easter weekend there and it was just as we remembered. We stayed in the Rancho rooms because they are ridiculously affordable and so our daughters could have their own room. The Ranchos are intended for thrift and aren't fancy but are fine for sleeping and showering.

The hotel is right on one of the best surf beaches so surfing and playing is steps away. We spent a lot of time at the pool as well.

The restaurant has a comprehensive menu that is very good along with a bar. There isn't much reason to leave the hotel.

If you want the resort, 5-star thing, this isn't your place. If you want good food, the best beach, comfy rooms and affordability, Las Tortugas can't be outdone.

Room Tip: Carrie, the owner will email you a list of available rooms. They have several types to cater to all...

This hotel is on the beach at Playa Grande and has only ambient lighting because the the owner is committed to preserve a favorable environment for sea turtles that come to lay eggs in the evening. I was impressed with their commitment. At night, the restaurant was candle-lit which was one of the most romantic dinners I've ever had. The food was excellent and we sat there listening to the waves. Will definitely go back one day!

Heard about Las Tortugas from a friend's parents who stayed there a few summers ago, right when they told about about the amazing beach front, restaurant, and vibe I knew we had to book there! It was definitely the most relaxing trip we've ever taken, loved booking excursions through the hotel and exploring in our rental car. We rented surfboards through Taco Star at the beach, canoed in the estuary, swam, and went for lots of beach walks. Loved the relaxed feel - it's like a home! All the staff is awesome, there's a room to accommodate anyone it seems. Hoping to head back with friends soon!

Room Tip: Many of the rooms in the hotel have beautiful porches!
