I was really excited to book and get to this hotel as I really respect the role the owners have played in creating the protected beaches for the turtles and the fact they employ local staff.
But, I have to say that I was not entirely happy with my brief stay at Hotel Las Tortugas.
The rooms were comfortable and had character. Our king size beds were massive and my wife loved the sheets.
I found the property had a kind of a dark and dingy feel to it. I know that it is designed to keep light off of the beach at night to avoid interfering with the turtles so the darkness is kind of a unique experience. But, to me it had kind of a dirty feel to it and I am not a picky traveler.
My main problem was that the staff seemed very disorganized and the service was not great. They make you pay 1/2 of the rate in advance and then the full price when you check in which was fine with me. But, on check in I had to explain that I had already paid half when I got there. After paying the balance on check in and when I went to check out the receptionist didn't seem to have a record of me paying or believe me that I had already paid the full price. We ultimately straightened it out but the confusion was not enjoyable.
While we weren't there long I did not find the staff at all friendly when I did deal with them. We stayed there for the last night of an 11 day trip and compared to the excellent service and friendly people we dealt with everywhere else in Costa Rica, Las Tortugas was a slight disappointment.
We did get a chance to see a leatherback turtle nesting which was an amazing experience and well worth doing.
I think the Hotel Las Tortugas gets a lot of bonus points for what the owners have done for the community and maybe I caught them on a bad night but I had high expectations going to the hotel and was a little disappointed.
