“My stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2011

I stayed at Playa Ocotal in October. The place is a few only a few minutes out from the city.
Overall, the place has all you need for a relaxing vacation. The pool is very nice, and fits very nicely into the view from the rooms. The bay is also a big attraction. It is a bit small an closed off, but it is calm and nice for swimming, and i even saw dolphins in it once. Furthermore, there are a few nice walks between the beaches (the nearby bays).
Beyond that the Villas themselves are very nice. The upper floor contains the bedrooms, which are all very nice, and the bottom floor has a well furnished kitchen, and a porch.
Bottom line, i would definitely recommend it.

I am just finishing up a 4 night stay in Villa Mariposa (Villa 10), which is one of the houses right on the beach (a quick walk down about twenty steps and you are a few yards from the sand). We have had a great time and have only left the resort for a trip to the grocery store in town. We are here for Easter week and it still not very crowded.

The house is amazing! Beautiful ocean view (slightly elevated), has every convenience of home, great two zone air conditioning, washer dryer, towels provided, includes plenty of quality snorkel gear, beautiful patio with ample seating and a hammock. As far as locations go we felt that this house had one of the best locations in the resort. It was very nice to be able to walk down to the beach and pool and only have a short walk back to the house for sunscreen, a hat, or a cold drink. I also liked the keyless access to the front door. My wife also commented that there were almost zero bugs inside or out. The internet connection was fast and had great range.

One recommendation for the owners would to be provide a simple stereo system that would allow a I-pod and other MP3/smart phone music systems to connect. I have a set of travel speakers, but didn't bring them assuming there would be something like that (my mistake).

The resort itself is very nicely kept. The pools are clean and overlook the beach. There were ample lounge chairs, but as others have noted it would be nice to have more shade umbrellas around the pool. There are only a few shady spots available. Luckily the house did provide a beach umbrella which we brought down to the beach. The restuarant is open for lunch and dinner and the food was good and reasonably priced $6 to $9 for most lunch items. A Pilsen beer was about $3 (comparalbe to $1.25 at the grocery store). The service was great and staff very friendly. For non-Spanish speakers most of the staff spoke English.

We were very happy that many of the guests staying at the resort were Costa Rican. There were plenty of Americans there, but it did not feel like you were in a resort where your only exposure to the people and culture of the region was through the staff. It may be because it was Easter week, but we enjoyed the different groups of people.

We would highly reccommend this location for couples and families. We felt very safe with our kids (6 and 9) walking to and from the beach and pool back to our villa. If we were going to stay for a full week we would have needed to do some tours and check out different areas, but I know that there are plenty of opportunities for that here and the owners provide a bunch of information about tours when you book the house.

The kids enjoyed the pool and beach, drinking frozen lemonades, checking out the tide pools, seeing howler monkeys in the trees, and meeting new friends.

For those concerned about driving in Costa Rica, don't be. It is perfectly safe and there are ample signs for most places. If you have any concerns rent a GPS with your car. The owners of Villa 10 provide great step by step directions on how to get to Bahia Pez Villa.

Highly recommended, owners were great to work with and I hope to come back!

We stayed with another couple in Villa # 10 for one week in February and we had a memorable holiday! The owners (Carolanne and Alvin) and the staff (Cesar and Allyson) were caring, responsive, knowledgeable and they all helped to make our holiday memorable. The location is quiet (which suits us) and we felt safe at all times whether we were inside the villa, at the pool, at the beach, at the restaurant or were just walking around and enjoying the beautiful landscaping. The villa is beautifully decorated and is well maintained. I contacted Vargas Tours before I arrived in CR, and Lupita helped us to plan a trip to Rincón de la Vieja National Park where we enjoyed a 3 hour guided horseback ride into a private forest. JC was our guide and was very excited when we spotted several different types of birds not usually seen. We then went on a canopy adventure through the rain forest and ended the day at the hot springs. Manny accompanied us for the day, and he is one of the best! Manny is knowledgeable and articulate, and is as interested in learning things about us and where we come from as we are to learn about Costa Rica!! We rented a car and drove to many beautiful places. The Arenal volcano wasn't active however, the trip there and back was beautiful. One caution is to be alert when driving on the road to and from Arenal! We drove to Jaco and Tamarindo and we ate in many wonderful places including Lola's (near Tamarindo), Playa Del Cafe (Coco Beach), Don Ruffino's (La Fortuna) to name a few. This was our 2nd trip to CR and we intend to return to Bahia Pez Vela in 2012. Thank-you Carolanne and Alvin!

We stayed in Villa number 29.

Our group was a 58 y/o couple, a 40 y/o couple and two young girls (11&13)

We loved having the condo as our home base - there were 3 full bedrooms, so lots of privacy. The kitchen was full sized with full sized appliances , toaster oven, coffee maker and dishwasher as well as a full laundry, washer, dryer and sink and a clothes line to hang up swimsuits and towels (and a safe) There were two and a half baths, a full living room with stereo and television with english speaking channels. There was free wireless internet service in the room, and also at the front desk if you needed it.

We cooked meals several times, the dining table seated 6, we had patio furniture outside to enjoy our morning coffee (costa rican coffee - mmm ) and our end-of-day cocktails. We brought a cribbage board and enjoyed many games outside as well.

The back yard of the villa we stayed in was one of the most private one in the complex ( I did a bit of walking during our stay, so I compared them all) The view of the bay was stunning. We saw wildlife, birds, howler monkeys, mapachi (local racoon) and we could hear waves of the ocean below us. The complex is built into a hillside to afford good ocean views for most villas.

We played in the surf at the private beach, and were able to buy a beach side massage for a very reasonable price. There were also two pools - one at the top of the complex, and one beachside, at the restaurant. We played in both those pools quite often with our beach ball that we picked up at the 'Super mercado' The lower pool was actually two pools, one deeper and one shallow enough for toddlers.

We ate lunch and dinner a few times at the local restaurant - it was close enough to walk, we were all healthy and young, but if you were older, infirm or had toddlers, you may choose to drive down the hill - there was plenty of parking. The food was great! On my last night I ordered the fresh fish special with seafood. The chef himself brought it out to me - the presentation was incredible, it was almost too pretty to eat!

Bahia Pez Vela, Unit 29 was a great place to call "home", just a quick drive into the village of Coco, where we did a bit of souvenir shopping, ate in several of the restaurants, cooled off in some of the several bars, We bought our groceries and alcohol, at all three of the local grocery stores. We even had a flat tire repaired for a cost equvalent of $2. We found a great air conditioned "north american style" coffee house in the pacifico complex.

We took a day trip down to Tamarindo beach, a local waterfall, Up into Nicaragua to Granada and a volcano tour. Tours could be arrange through the front desk, where the staff all spoke excellent english. They are very helpful and eager to please.

The security guards were efficient, they stopped us at the gate until they recognized our car and our faces... and they strolled the property at night making sure that all was safe and sound.

TIP: buy coffee and breakfast items to enjoy at your Villa - the restaurant does not open till lunch (at least not when were where there)

TIP: Rent a car for your stay. The costs are very reasonable, and you will want it to do some touring on your own. We rented from Economy in LIberia - I reserved online - they picked up and dropped off right at the airport. When we had a flat, we put on the spare, drove it over to them, and they changed all the tires for us. The staff even gave us directions to the amazing waterfall and swimming hole that we went to.

TIP: be ready to buy some shampoo and soap for the shower, these are vacation rentals and these items may not be provided. You can get those in Coco very reasonably priced at any of the supermarkets.

TIP: take your passport to the bank and pre-pay your exit 'tax'. You will avoid the line at the airport and save a lot of time.

We stayed a little over a week in Villa 11. I have nothing but positive things to say about the owners, Al and Carolanne (see http://www.flipkey.com/properties/view/189359/beachfront+villa+in+bahia+pez+vela+-+playa+ocotal/ to contact them directly). My husband and I are avid travelers, and I can say without question that Al is in a league of his own in terms of responsiveness and service provided. He not only answered all of my many questions before we left, but he went out of his way to ensure that our vacation was memorable. He even put us in touch with one of his friends in Costa Rica in case we wanted to enjoy some of the local activities (like a nearby rodeo). Once we arrived at the villa, Al also called us just to make certain that everything was to our satisfaction and to see if we had additional questions. As I said, he really went above and beyond our previous experiences in terms of service, even compared to the exceptional service we received at various five star hotels. The staff and Bahia Pez also were incredibly friendly and always willing to provide us with information about excursions in the area. I mentioned in passing during check-in that I was excited to see monkeys in the wild, and one of the guys in the office called me a couple days later just to tell me there were some monkeys outside the office at that moment. I could not believe he even remembered me saying this, much less that he made a point to call me.

The villa itself is exactly as pictured (http://homepage.mac.com/marketman2/Sites/gecr/pezv/sm11/index.html), minus the hammock on the back porch. Everything is clean and comfortable, which really helps ensure that you feel at home during your stay. Of course, I don’t have an amazing view like this at home! I loved getting up every morning, drinking a hot cup of coffee on the patio, and just enjoying the tranquil surrounding of tropical birds and turquoise water crashing on shore right in front of me. It is a perfect place to get away from it all!

Just as a note, driving in Costa Rica is not like driving in the States. If something is 120 miles away, for example, just know that is will likely take you over 5 hours to get there. We were unaware of this when planning. We initially planned to make a long-day trip to Manuel Antonio from this villa, but the drive is actually a little over 5 hours (and it is best not to drive after dark in Costa Rica). We had to change our plans once in Costa Rica and ended up staying a couple nights in Manuel Antonio as well. There are wonderful things about staying in the Guanacaste area (where this villa is located), and this is one of the few places where you can stay so close to the water at a reasonable price. I just don't want others to make the same inaccurate assumptions in their planning.

I recently had the pleasure of renting Villa Toucan at Bahia Pez Vela and would highly recommend it. My friends and I loved the resort's secluded beach (we were the only people on the beach for most of our stay), the gorgeous views, the friendly wildlife and the exceedingly helpful resort staff. It was the first time in Costa Rica for our entire group, and we took advantage of the location to take days trips arranged by the staff to Rincon de la Vieja (for a canopy tour, horseback ride, hotsprings and mudbath) and to Nicaragua, in addition to many blissful days exploring nearby towns and enjoying the resort. The villa itself was wonderful and full of amenities (including a much needed washer/dryer), and we were pleasantly surprised by how convenient anything else we could imagine was to the resort (dining, grocery shopping, nightlife, post office, etc.). And the owners couldn't have been better to rent from -- they answered all of our questions and then some.
