The hotel is set high up above the Pacific with great views and a lovely terrace and restaurant area. However when we stayed at the start of Dec 2012 several areas of the terrace were closed as the wooden structure was rotten and unsafe. The beach (reached via steep steps of the road) is not very inviting as the bay is used as a mooring area for the dive and fishing boats.
The reception area is pleasant but checking is is slightly unnerving as you have to sign various papers stating you must pay significant sums of money if you loose your key etc.and have to sign a blank credit card slip (make sure you get it back when you check out). They seem to lack a system to charge for drinks on the terrace and with meals so it is worth checking your bill carefully when you check out.
The rooms, and indeed the whole resort was the dirtiest of any of the hotels we stayed in during our 2 weeks in Costa Rica. In our first room we had a broken fridge (it was empty) and several of the other guests reported non functioning TVs, toilets, jacuzzi, patio doors etc.. On the second days the hot water pipe under our sink became loose and flooded the whole room in scolding water to a depth of several inches. The staff and reception seemed unconcerned leaving us to clear the room and not sending anyone to look at it for nearly 20 minutes by which time the water was flowing out of the door.
The food was very disappointing for a 4 star hotel. The breakfasts were the poorest of anywhere we stayed with a limited choice. The food served for lunch and dinner was very basic (chicken or fish with sauce followed by fried pineapple and ice cream being typical).
The resort had the feel of a 4 star resort that fallen on hard times and was now cutting all the corners it could to make ends meet. Just glad we were only staying 2 nights. Very handy for the airport at Liberia (20 mins away by car)
