“If you like it hot...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2013

We spent a week in late April-early May and were not expecting the temperatures to be mid 90s and humid. The pools were beautiful but too warm to offer much relief. We stayed in one of the bungalows which was nicely appointed but the a/c ran non-stop and keep the room warmer than we would have liked. We reported the issue and it was looked at but nothing done to correct the problem until we finally had enough of it and were moved to another bungalow on our third day. The housekeeping staff did a great job keeping the room clean and restocking the refrigerator with our beverages of choice. Room service for breakfast was a treat we enjoyed several times. The best food and service was at The Bamboo and the italian restaurant. Service at the latin restuarant was great but food was bland. Food at french restaurant was average but the worst possible service. We had a table of 8 and the delay in service meant some dishes got cold waiting for everyone at the table to be served. The staff seemed untrained and unattentive. Unfortunately many people in our group were sickened with a stomach virus. Some food handling practices were questionable so be aware to choose carefully. Grounds crew were always busy cleaning and grounds were well maintained and beautiful. Overall the service staff were hardworking and friendly while the the front lobby staff needs better training and leadership.

Room Tip: Bungalows 1-3 are closest to the beach and very convenient to pools and restaurants. Request ocean f...

Before leaving I read most of the reviews and we upgraded to the Royal Beach Club and it does make a difference. You are treated like gold. I totally stayed away from the buffets and had breakfast and lunch at the Faisinella (Italian). The food was always good there. Our dinner there with a large group was less than memorable. They ran out of lamb shank and the tirami su dessert. We couldn't get reservations before 8:30 and we all felt like they couldn't wait to get us out of there. However, I cannot let this one evening spoil what was otherwise the most I had ever been spoiled in a long time. Yes, the pool was like a warm bath, but somehow, when you came out of the water, you were still refreshed. I felt as if I should take our concierge, Elial, home with us. The room was so comfortable and clean and we had a separate sitting area.
My husband got sick day 3 and the doctor called our room to check on him. I was impressed.

Room Tip: We had a corner, ground floor unit, in front of the beach. It was quiet and tranquil.

Our stay at the Westin Was awesome!! All the staff was so friendly and did anything we asked to make our stay even better... Food was great with the exception of the buffet . I would suggest that you make dinner reservations for stay as soon as you check in to your room. Highly recommend Eric down on the beach for all excursions He along with his staff (Wachi & Rico Suave) are wonderful they are very knowledgeable, speak good English, and made sure we had a wonderful experience . Also there is a little town within walking distance of the resort to buy souvenirs if you decide to walk there be sure to grab a bite to eat at the Golden Shrimp food and service was outstanding..Overall we had an amazing time at the Westin and hope to return soon

We stayed at the Westin from 4/28-5/4. The resort itself is very pretty and the pool area is very nice but the water temperature was entirely too hot. It felt like we were in a hot tub - seriously. The beds are comfortable and the rooms were very nice. We found the hotel staff to be very friendly but the food and the drinks were average at best considering what you pay to stay here. The best restaurant to us was the Asian restaurant called Bamboo. Try the shrimp curry pasta dish. It was the only really delicious dish we had while there. The medi restaurant was our next favorite restaurant. The seafood dishes were pretty good. The french restaurant has a lovely view of the sunset. Make sure to eat there when you can see it. Their chicken cordon bleu was okay as well. There were a lot of people who got sick while staying there but we were fortunate not to. They did have notices on our doors to be careful and use the hand sanitizers available in many locations. Not a great feeling when on vacation to have some sort of outbreak while you are there. We read about Erik on other reviews and he is definitely the one you want to go to for booking travel/excursions. One couple in our party booked a rafting trip through the hotel and the lady was injured because the water was so low and she was hurt on rocks. Erik told us beforehand not to book a rafting trip. He is honest, courteous, and gives good advice as to what he thinks will work best for your needs. Tell him Diana & Michael said hello if you talk to him!! We would go back just to see him alone! This property is so pretty and would be a perfect spot if they would improve their food a bit and cool the pool down. Tip: Bring sunscreen and bug spray. It is ridiculously expensive in Costa Rica. ($51 for both). Also, bring lots of $1s for tipping and dress here is very casual. One other thing to consider is this resort is mostly older people - 50s & 60s. I would recommend paying the departure tax at the hotel on your way home so you don't have to wait in line at the airport. Hope this helps!!

Room Tip: Email the hotel in advance and ask for a room closest to the pool.

My wife and I visited the Westin in February for 5 nights on the second leg of our honeymoon. The first place we stayed was very small and remote, very hard to get to. So we were looking forward to the Westin to relax and have everything taken care of for us. We were upgraded to the royal beach club which was great. We would have been fine not being upgraded but the pool was great, service as well. Make sure you request your drinks with the name brand alcohol of your choice. The room was great WiFI worked the entire time in the room. Our Concierge Bergin made our reservations the first night and we were able to eat at every restaurant. We enjoyed them all the french and Mediterranean were the best but all were good. I really do not see where most of the complaints come from. We were willing to eat our dinners later at night and had no trouble with reservations. i would recommend doing it that way because there is little or nothing to do after dinner here.

We barely used the cart services only to get to the lobby most times. The grounds are great and everywhere is walkable very easily including the beach. The beach I thought was fantastic I do not know where the complaints come from on this site honestly it was great and completely empty. We were not bothered at all by the vendors, they are at the gate if you walk 30 yards to your left you pretty much have a wide open beautiful beach to yourself.

We did one excursion through our travel company and one through Erik on the beach. Both were great. The lazy lizard catamaran through Erik was fantastic one of the highlights of our 10 days in CR. The crew was great, very fun, Dolphins swimming under the catmaran and all around it in the sunset. I would make sure you have cash to pay Erik with, the credit card machine on the beach was a bit "iffy" when it would not work he agreed to let us go on the cruise and bring him cash the next day. I also would not count on the ATM at the Westin as it only worked once while we were there. When we could not access cash Erik actually let me take an ATV into Brasillito (1/2 mile down the beach) to an ATM. Quite an experience. All in all the Westin was great would definitely go back.....

The resort and staff are very nice and will drop what they are doing to help you. The room was beautiful but king beds are hard to come by. I got sick with a stomach virus (so they say) and many others did too. The doctor at the westin has no idea how to properly insert an IV and used the biggest needle to do so. It hurt for duration of my two hour stay in the office. Completely ruined my trip for 4 days. Doesn't seem like they use chlorine for the pool either.

Dear Rulb04,

Thank you for sharing these lines on your recent stay at our resort. We are glad to know that you appreciated our facilities, our ample rooms and kind staff.

At The Westin Golf Resort & Spa, Playa Conchal, the safety, security and well-being of guests and associates are our paramount priority to us. It has come to our attention that some guests in the surrounding area and at our hotel have fallen ill. We are investigating the cause and in the abundance of caution, we are taking prudent steps throughout all of the hotel’s operations to provide a safe and healthful environment.

This matter is of utmost importance and we are taking it very seriously. Do not hesitate to contact me for further input.

Allow me to clarify that we indeed use chlorine at our pools, following international standards. Moreover and aligned to both Costa Rica’s legislation and Westin Hotels & Resorts policies, we perform monthly laboratory tests of our pool water, which has not shown any discrepancy to established sanitary benchmarks.

Sincerely,

Victor Gomez

Great hotel. Restaurants were good. Good see Erik Morales for the excursions. Very reasonable price for everything. Nightlife was slow though.i would recommend the sushi/ Thai, Mediterranean. Did not care for the Italian restaurant.
