“Planning our next trip back... loved it !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2012

Stayed here for 8 days, November 14th to 22nd. Got in touch with the hotel and they arranged the transfer to and from the airport. When we arrived at Liberia airport the driver was waiting with a sign with our names on. It took around 45 minutes, which we got to see monkeys at the side of the road. $90 each way for 2 of us.

When we arrived at the reception area we were welcomed with friendly smiles and the offer to take a seat at the bar. We were pleasantly informed that we had been upgraded and will be taken to private check in over at the Royal Beach Club (we are SPG gold) (RBC) via the golf cart. The RBC is an adults only area pool, butler service around the pool for all your food and drinks needs and a private concierge. There is also the added benefit of premium brand alcohol (be sure to specify your preference when ordering), complimentary Wifi, coffee 3 to 5 in the RBC check-in (very nice foyer, with air conditioning!) and breakfast/lunch at Faisanela.

Private check-in went smoothly, lots of information to absorb but leaflets to take away. Top tip would be to enquire straight away the restaurants open days (we were there just before peak season) and then book all reservations. It can get difficult to get into each restaurant at the time of preference. However you do not need to book for the buffet and you can get 24 hour room service.

The service was out of this world, our concierges John and David were amazing. One evening they made bathroom up with flowers, very nice touch. The maid did a great job on the room including making me a towel animal, I did love that. The guys at the bar were super friendly and wanted to do their best at all times. They even remembered our drinks and were making them before I even got to the bar, some times they made you two! Restaurant service was also brilliant and efficient.

I am a big foodie, so tried all the restaurants, buffet and room service. Breakfast in the room was a perfect way to start the day on the balcony. Favourite Cauri (French) not only was the food amazing so was the view. Atmosphere was fantastic and there is a nice bar you can hang out before/after dinner. Duck was cooked to perfection and loved the creme brulee.

Cararcola we tried for lunch more than once. They have lighter options salads and wraps. But we tried a fish burger very enjoyable. If you don't get too full try the chocolate brownie. Spirula (pizza place) was very good if you like a thin crust pizza.

We ate at Mitra buffet on international buffet evening. Salad and desert stations were firm favourites. Like breakfast there is lots of choice, try the fresh fruit and smoothies at breakfast extremely refreshing.

Faisanella was open at lunch/dinner only (due to low season) so we didn't get to try breakfast there but did love the lunches we had. We sat out side but be warned it can get a bit too hot in the midday sun. Dinner must haves are the lamb shank and the tiramisu.

Las Candelas, Latin inspired, was nice but would be rushing back for any of the main course selections. We did enjoy the tres leches and strawberry desert. Bamboo, lovely Thai food. Big portions, try the spicy soup.

There were many shows and activities available incase you are not one for the pool/beach side. We saw most of the evening shows. They were all very good but the must sees would be the magicians and the circus. The day activities were either very active or informative. We went on the bike tour, you get a helmet and water which is difficult to hold. I am not at all adventures or fit and found some of the tour hills hard. Don't forget to put lotion on and bring a camera as the view is breath taking. The running session follows a very similar route to the bike tour. We also tried kayaking as part of the package for an hour, life vest included. Some of the classes you need to book and they are worth going to, coffee and food tasting. It is the staff that really make these enjoyable, they are awesome.

Yoga on the beach was very nice and relaxing. The aqua-tone session was also very fun way to work out. The beach is fabulous. We went horse riding booked through Eric Garcia.I have never rode a horse before so only wanted half an hour rather than an hour and he arranged this. Our Instructor was amazing and soon had me galloping down the beach

Don't forget at the airport there is a Departure Tax which needs to be paid before you check your baggage through, this can paid in us dollars and we got dollars change

Overall amazing resort, with friendly, warm, attentive, awesome staff, they truly made the experience hats off to them.

If you are not sure about this hotel or Costa Rica don't be it is truly amazing. We take 7 -8 trips a year and rarely visit anywhere twice but we simply can not wait to go back here and its first on our list to book for 2013!

We looked at reviews before we came and they all recommended Erik Garcia. We found him easily on the beach and he was great. He created an amazing excursion for 10 of us to ride ATVs about an hour to the Conga Trail for zip lining, and back again on the ATVs. All of us (adults and teenagers) had a fantastic time for a reasonable price. Bring cash. He can provide almost any excursion you want directly from this location. Thanks Erik!

A beautiful resort with spacious rooms. The staff is wonderful and try to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The resort layout and condition are absolutely beautiful!
The only negatives: Inconsistency among the staff and restaurants. The day-to-day staff are very helpful and want to make sure you are attended to and keep you happy. In some cases it is like "the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing." All of the restaurants are good and have varied menus-however, the meal quality is inconsistent and most of the restaurants use too much salt in the food.

Room Tip: Being an extremely large resort, you may opt to stay near your activities during the day. There are...

My family (two adults, two teenagers) recently stayed at the Westin and had a fabulous family vacation. I would not hesitate to recommend this resort. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. The rooms are spacious and the service is amazing. The staff work very hard to meet all your needs and are extremely pleasant. We found our Royal Beach Club concierge team of David and Bergin to be exceptionally helpful.
The food is the best we have experienced in an all inclusive environment. We visited all the restaurants and were not disappointed by any. Do make reservations early and be on time for your reservation. We did observe a large party arriving late for their reservation that were not able to be accomodated.
We booked two trips through Erik Garcia on the beach and were not disappointed. The guides were very professional and knowledgeable and Erik works hard to customize his tours to meet your needs. Our experience was very authentic and included an unplanned stop at a sugar cane farm so that we could sample some of the fresthly harvested crop.We would not hesitate to book through Erik again in the future.
There are also many activities included by the resort at no cost. Take advantage of the kayaking and snorkelling by booking at the kiosk at the entry to the beach. Bikes can also be booked here. The beach yoga was very worthwhile. I believe it is a daily 8:00 am activity. It is a bit confusing the first time - the instructor meets you at the gym at 8:00am and then the class walks to the beach for the class. Once you know the routine, you can pick up your own towel in the morning and meet the group at the beach. The instructor was fabulous and adapted activites for all levels. I would also recommend a trip to Tamarindo-lots of shops and big waves on the beach. A return trip can be arranged by the hotel for $50. There is also a shuttle service to Tamarindo.
Thanks to all the staff at the Westin and Erik Garcia for making our family trip so enjoyable. We have lots of wonderful memories!

We have just returned from the Westin and have some wonderful memories.
I will break this review into sections:

Resort: lovely well maintained grounds with wildlife all around including coatis, iguanas, squirrels and howler monkeys( very loud!). The hotel offers shuttle carts wherever you need to go around the resort, we preferred to walk as you would then get to see all the animals.
The pool is very big and just the right temperature, no need to reserve sun beds there were always plenty free( the hotel was not full when we were there though). There are a number of activities you can take part in through the activity centre by the main pool, such as coffee tasting, wine tasting, bike tours( you can hire these free of charge along with the Kayaks)

Rooms: very clean and spacious, comfy beds and room service is included. Housekeeping was a bit hit and miss. Sometimes towels were missing or laundry not returned until requested and the mini bar was not always filled. However a quick call to express service and this was sorted, a minor annoyance. The rooms are open plan so whilst there are doors on the shower and toilet they are not very private.

Beach: stunning! It might not be the softest of sand but very pretty and the sea is warm too. You can hire jet skis and banana boats etc which was great fun.

Restaurants: we enjoyed all the restaurants and had no trouble booking any if them. Our favourite was the Italian and this partly due to the ambience of this restaurant compared to the others. We found the portion sizes to be just right and the quality was very good. Our least favourite was the buffet, we only ate in there twice but the choices were not great.
The cocktails were okay ( dirty monkeys are fab)but I really dislike having drinks in plastic cups, understand you need this in the pool areas but they also used them in the reception and buffet bars.

Trips: we booked our trips through Pablo at Swiss Travel ( desk by the beach) . We saw Erik on the beach and chose not to use him due to a lack of insurance and also some people had told us they had been let down by him.
We went to Palo Verde river trip( amazing, wonderful wild life). Sunset cruise, this is only offered to Westin guests so there tend to be smaller numbers. The trip offered by the guys on the beach is open to everyone and when we arrived at the catamaran we could see lots of people getting on the Lazy Lizzard, whereas on ours we had only 15 people. We saw dolphins and the sunset was great.
We also went on a canopy tour to Borinquin, I had read about this resort before we went and knew I wanted to go there. Pablo doesn't usually offer this trip but arranged a private tour in a SUV just for the three of us, our guide Gio was fantastic and the trip to Borinquin went so quickly as he told us all about Costa Rica along the way. We did horseback riding, ziplining mud baths etc and the lunch was good too.
We checked our travel insurance and it did not include ziplining, so paid extra to ensure we were covered. I would recommend checking what cover you have , even though Swiss Travel have insurance I am not sure they would be happy to pay for us to be flown back to UK if we had an accident, we chose not to risk it.

There are a few shops, including a coffee shop that is not part of the all inclusive, the prices are quite high but we did enjoy having an iced coffee now and then.

We had a number of fantastic photos taken by the Ceaser and Irena from the photo shop. We booked a session on the beach and the quality of the photos are very good.

To sum up our holiday, Costa Rica is a beautiful country with wonderful friendly people. There are many trips to go on and the wildlife is great. The hotel is excellent and I hope to return again some day.

We stayed at the Westin Playa Conchal Dec 1 - Dec 7, 2012 and cannot speak highly enough of our time there. The resort and local area are beautiful, the food in every restaurant was delicious, and the service was beyond amazing. Our Royal Beach Club concierge team - David M and Nelson H - ensured that we were always comfortable - They are the consummate professionals while displaying the friendliness that we discovered is abundant in Costa Rica. By staying at the Royal Beach Club level, we had access to a number of upgrades, but the best by far was the smaller, adults-only pool. If you prefer a more relaxed environment than the hustle and bustle (e.g., water aerobics classes, children splashing) of the main pool, it is a must. Our time at the Royal Beach Club pool was also greatly enhanced by the wonderful service provided by Manrique M and David R.

The public beach is beautiful and I would highly recommend guests take a stroll all the way down to the end. We saw very few guests venture beyond the area directly in front of the resort and they are missing out. Nearby Brasilito Beach also offers a completely different experience, as it is much wider and has darker sand.

We booked two tours (horseback riding and ATV) through Erik Garcia, who you will find just outside the resort on the way to the beach, and loved them both. The experiences were authentic and exhilarating!

The only reason for not giving an overall "Excellent" rating was that there were some issues with our reservation that were related to booking through the website. That being said, the hotel staff handled the situation with absolute professionalism and speed. The General Manager also took the time to follow up when I submitted feedback via the Westin website. In the future, I will be placing a call upon placing the reservation and before we leave to ensure my booking was received.

Aside from that small hiccup, our trip to the Westin Playa Conchal exceedws our expectations - We will be back! Pura Vida!

My boyfriend and I just got back from our 6 day 5 night vacation at the Westin Golf Resort & Spa, Playa Conchal and all I can say is amazing. We booked our trip in October and between then and the night before we left I did my fair share of reading on the hotel and of all the reviews on trip advisor. Here is our take on the hotel & vacation as a whole.

First off, 6 days was not enough! With the traveling, we only had 4 FULL days and by the end of our trip we wished we had stayed an extra 2 or 3 days longer.

THE HOTEL GROUNDS: the hotel grounds were beautiful! Everything was so well kept and there were always workers attending to not only the landscape but the restaurants and pool areas making sure everything was clean and more than presentable. The hotel itself is big but I do not think that the walking was much of a problem. The only area that was a bit of a hike was the main lobby but there were shuttles everywhere and we never had an issue getting a ride up to the main lobby. All the rooms were in a good proximity to the main pool and the Royal BC pool. The two were also very close to one another.

ROYAL BEACH CLUB: We stayed at the RBC Adult Only section and thought it was well worth it for the reason that we had more options than those who stayed in the regular part of the hotel. We had the option of going to either pool/bar and the RBC stayers had their own restaurant for breakfast buffet, lunch and dinner (dinner was open to all guests). RBC also had premium liquor however, the bar at the main pool was just fine. In terms of the amount of people - we loved the fact that the RBC pool was so quiet and not crowded AT ALL. The main pool got crowded and the bar was typically full whenever we walked by whereas the RBC pool and bar were never full. We were always able to find chairs at the RBC pool to lay out and get a seat either inside the pool at the bar or outside the pool at the bar. It is said that the RBC also had advantages in terms of reservations for dinner - I do not know how true that is. We did not book any reservations prior to our arrival. I called the hotel the day before in attempts to make reservations (which they were more than happy to do for us) but with all the options, did not know which restaurants to book and ended up not booking anything until we got there. The RBC stayers also had their own butler who assisted them during check in and throughout their stay. Our butler, JONATHAN is the nicest person. Whenever he saw us walking he offered us a ride and was always offering to stop by our room to make reservations for us and answers any other questions we had.

THE ROOMS: As mentioned, we purchased the RBC package and had planned on staying in the regular Royal Beach Room. Those rooms are in two buildings on either side of the RBC pool and restaurant so it is very close - barely a walk. We were actually upgraded when we checked in to a Royal Beach Junior Suite which was in a bungalow overlooking the beach. The bungalows were nice because instead of tall buildings, they were made up of four rooms: 2 on the first floor and 2 on the second floor all back to back. Ours was the one at the very end (room 4014). Although it was the last one and the farthest away, we loved it. The security guard sat right outside our room and we became very close with him - he would tell us about the surrounding areas, ask us about our trips and always make sure we were comfortable. There was a tree right outside the 3 bungalows where all the monkeys would come and eat. You could hear them in the morning at around 7:30am and the security guard always made sure to knock on our door when he saw them outside so we didn't miss them. The room itself was very nice. We had a small living room area, a desk, a table to eat on and a sink with a mini fridge. The mini fridge was stocked daily with juice, soda, water, beer and hard alcohol. Every morning we would leave a note with what we wanted in the fridge and a $2 tip and always came back to it being stocked up completely. The room was always clean and they would come 2 or 3 times a day to make sure we had enough towels and soaps and what not. 3 of the nights, we came back after dinner to a bottle of wine and chocolate covered strawberries without even asking! I noticed a review about the room keys - not once did we have a problem with our room keys. We also had free wifi in our room but only got a connection in one area of the room where the receiver was - about 2 bars over by the bed and the couch in the living room area and no connection by the bathroom. This was that big of a deal to us and there was strong wifi everywhere else at the hotel - pool, bars, restaurants.

THE FOOD: Please remember that you are visiting a Latin country and do not expect to have the most amazing American, Italian, French, etc. food. For an all inclusive hotel - the food was very good. SO MANY options - Italian (RBC), French, Asian Fusion, Mediterranean, Latin American, Pizza, etc. The pizza was amazing and you could sit and eat there or order it to go. We typically ate the pizza for lunch or skipped lunch because of the excursions we went on. Breakfast buffet at the RBC was delicious - you could have just about anything. Eggs, omelets, pancakes, french toast, variety of fruits and cereals, etc. At the RBC buffet they always had alcohol out which was pretty cool to have in the morning with with your orange or grapefruit juice. For dinner, we ate twice at the Latin American - by far the best in terms of food AND SERVICE. The Italian was also very good - eggplant parm was out of this world. We ate at the French our first night and thought it was delicious but after the other nights it became our least favorite. We also ordered a lot of room service, i think we did every night for late night snacks of french fries and desserts. At night it probably took about 20-30 minutes but one morning we called and it was a one hour wait so we chose to just walk over and sit down.

In terms of reservations - we made them day by day and were able to get one easily. The 6pm reservations were always open since thats when they opened and it was not crowded at that time at all. If you are picky about the time you'd like to eat I would suggest making them the day you get there for your entire stay.

I saw one review about the beach having too many shells - honestly yes there were shells maybe the first 3 ft and the rest was beautiful sand. The beach was also very long and the shells were only by the entrance of the beach and the rest was fine. It is a beautiful walk down to the point and back. There were vendors just by the entrance of the beach from the hotel and they did ask you to buy things - just say no if youre not interested and they wont bother you again. For the most part they wont even ask you or try to sell you anything unless you walk over to their booths.

We also became close with one of the bartenders, Donald aka TACO who was so nice and my boyfriend spent a lot of time at the bar talking to him!

EXCURSIONS - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take these reviews into consideration. I spoke numerous times with Swiss Travel who is the company on the hotel grounds for prices on excursions and activities before arriving. They are overpriced. After reading the reviews for months, the first thing I did when I got to the hotel was go STRAIGHT TO ERIK GARCIA on the beach. YOU CANNOT MISS HIM AND HIS CREW. He is VERY PROFESSIONAL - has a resume for you to see and an ipad with pictures of all the trips he offers. We knew we wanted to see things and do things that we could not do back home and told him we definitely wanted to see monkeys. Erik wrote down all the trips with the pricing on it for us. We ate lunch, looked over the list and went back to schedule trips with him. He had trips every day and it was very easy to plan one. When comparing the trips to the hotel (besides the huge difference in pricing), the amount of people in your group if you plan a trip through the hotel could be 30 people. The trips are not just with people at the Westin, but at the surrounding hotels too. Erik's groups are VERY SMALL 6-8 people which allows you to really interact with your tour guide, talk with him, learn alot and not worry about getting a good seat. Just think: do you want to wait for 20 people to zip line 500 feet or be in a group of 6 people and not have to wait at all. We met a guy at the hotel one morning while we were waiting to be picked up by one of Erik's tour guides. The guy was telling us how he spent over $200 on a trip through the hotel to see monkeys drove an hour in the car to the area and didn't see any. He said it was the biggest waste of money and time and then he ended up seeing monkeys at the hotel over by the bungalows for free.

Our first trip with Erik that morning - Palo Verde Boat Tour - was the most amazing trip. We were in a group of 6 people, went on a boat through the river and GOT TO HOLD, FEED, SEE MONKEYS. We also fed a 14ft crocodile who swam up literally right next to our boat. The second trip we planned with Erik was the ATV and zip lining. The day after our first tour, we went to the beach to tell him how much we loved it and ended up booking and leaving for a second tour 30 minutes later. We drove ATV's for one hour through the towns and the beach, went on 11 different wire bridges and 11 different zip lines, paid $5 to hold, feed and play with a baby monkey, and then drove an hour back on the ATV's. His trips are truly AMAZING and worth every cent. Erik and his tour guides WANT YOU TO HAVE AN AMAZING TIME. They are always willing to stop for pictures, to see or buy things and will answers all your questions. Yes, accidents can happen but they can happen when you're with Erik or with Swiss Travel or any other tour group. Just be smart and know that you are in a foreign country and listen to your tour guides. WE TRUST ERIK GARCIA 100%.

Lastly, on our final day we really wanted to see the town and do some shopping but did not want to go alone. We went to the beach and spoke with ERIC GONZALEZ with the jet skis. He was SO NICE and instead of going home for the day, offered to show us around the town. We asked Erik Garcia if we could borrow Eric for a tour and he more than encouraged us to go with him. ERIC GONZALEZ took pictures of us, showed us the area, helped us bargain prices and really gave us a feeling for the area. It was so nice to just talk with him about his life and his family and the town.

PLEASE GO SEE THESE GUYS ON THE BEACH. THIS IS THEIR JOB AND THEY WORK SO HARD TO MAKE A LIVING FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR FAMILIES. You will become familiar with the saying "Pura Vida" and I really feel that ERIK GARCIA, ERIC GONZALEZ and the rest of their guys on the beach really show you the true meaning of it and what it means to them.

Room Tip: Royal Beach Club is well worth the extra money. You're also more likely to get an upgrade to a b...
