We read a lot of reviews before going to the Westin Playa Conchal. After spending our 23rd wedding anniversary there (April 15-22, 2012),weI struggled to understand how anyone could have anything negative to say. It was paradise!! I’ve given a lot of information here which will hopefully give you a good idea of what the WPC is all about!
RESORT: 1 hour exactly from Liberia airport. Lots to see on the way. The lobby is exquisite, with a breathtaking view overlooking the resort. Beautiful 2 story villa type buildings around the grounds, and two 3-story villas for the Royal Beach club guests. We saw on TA that people complained about how large it is and having to use the little trucks to transport you. We were surprised to see that it is nothing like people complained about. It is big, but definitely walkable for everyone of all ages. It’s so beautiful with the lush trees and flowers, why wouldn’t you want to walk! We rarely if ever got a ride. Only on the last day when checking out (with our bags.) You’ll see the cute little Coatis. They sort of a racoon/ant eater looking creature. Don’t bother you at all and they’re adorable! Also, they have iguanas like we have squirrels in Canada. But they are incredible creatures and don’t bother you in the least.
ROOMS: We stayed in the Royal Beach Club (adults only) and it was well worth the little bit extra. When we checked in we were surprised to find that we had been upgraded to a RBC suite! The Royal Beach club towers were beautiful, with a wonderful garden in the centre, open balconies all around. A beautiful fountain which they turned off later at night and didn’t turn on until later in the morning so as to not disturb guests. Our RB suite was exquisite with 2 bathrooms, one beautiful large bathroom with rain shower; king side bed and large balcony with furniture and large stone Jacuzzi. Our housekeeper (Hilda) made wonderful towel animals almost every day! Our butlers at tower 2 (David & Eric) saw to our each and every need. They always asked what we were doing that day, how we were enjoying everything, where we were going to dinner...they were amazing.
POOLS: Large meandering pool at the Royal Beach Club with lots of loungers (never had to search for one). They also had large and beautiful pool cabanas you could reserve for just $20.00. The pool was clean, well maintained and never busy. It was quieter than the pool in the family area which was great. Fabulous bartenders at the pool bar....I recommend you try EVERYTHING but especially the Costa Rica Tropical and Dirty Monkey! The pool at the Family area was very nice as well (huge). A little louder because of more people (families) but exquisite as well. It was surrounded by beautiful lush trees, flowers & birds. Another great pool bar!
FOOD: We ate at all the restaurants but the Asian restaurant (Bamboo). They were all beautifully designed and the food wonderful. We heard a few Americans complain about portions but we found them more than big enough. The selection was great (something for everyone). The international buffet (Mitra) is phenomenal!! What a selection. We also loved the Italian restaurant (adults only for breakfast and lunch). Room Service is included when you stay at the RBC and it was great!! We ordered it for 6:00 am one morning because we were going on a tour and it was right on time!
PEOPLE: I can’t say enough about the people at the resort! Each and every person greeted you everywhere you went! We never saw anything but a genuine smile from everyone. From our housekeeper, to the landscaping staff, to the people in the restaurants, they showed their pride in their country and resort. Most spoke very good English and really appreciated you trying out your Spanish on them. They appreciated that we made the effort.
TOURS: We met the infamous Eric Rodriguez on the beach, who was not pushy at all and very respectful. Any vendors on the beach (they’re not associated with hotel) were not pushy or aggressive. They told you what they offered and then thanked you for listening. We personally didn’t feel comfortable using someone outside the hotel tour desk, but we’ve ready many good things about Eric. There were a few tour companies in the hotel (downstairs from the lobby) but we used ARENAS ADVENTURES. They were great. We highly recommend them. They also had a desk in the Royal Beach Club lounge to book tours. We did the ATV’s, the “Buena Vista” tour (saw tons of monkeys) and the “Palo Verde” tour (lots of crocodiles and exquisite birds). All were amazing, beautiful, fun and the lunches provided on the last 2 were terrific. (We had booked 1 tour through Air Canada’s tour desk which got all screwed up, so we used Arenas after that.)
Overall, the country is incredibly beautiful, the people proud, friendly and welcoming. We will go back in a heartbeat to CR and the Westin!! We personally thanked VICTOR GOMEZ(Hotel Manager) for such an amazing trip before we left. He is a very personable individual who is committed to making all of his guests feel right at home. As he said to us, this is su casa. I am sure that your trip to Costa Rica and the Westin will be....”PURA VIDA”
Royal Beach Club is well worth the little bit extra.
