“Like staying at grandma's. ..”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2014

Sweet people and furniture straight from your grandma's house. Everything worked but if you're looking for modern look elsewhere, if you just want nice and functional. ..this is it. A little far from the action, as it is in this medium size , by CR standard s, town...that's really the only negative

We stayed at 3 locations during our vacation in Costa Rica due to the various activities we had planned but honestly, after experiencing Hotel Javy, we wish we could've stayed there the entire time! Other places we stayed at (reviews forthcoming): Coco Beach Hotel at Playa del Coco (not bad but here was better) and Casa Blanca villas in Nuevo Arenal (our least favorite). To be quite honest, when we first drove up to the property and saw it was gated I thought to myself 'how the heck could this be #1?' We had driven past the first spot we had booked, the Hilton, which looked nice and is closer to the airport but we opted for a more authentic experience and are so glad we did.

We arrived and were happily greeted by Isabel. Isabel reminded me of a sweet aunt, she was so nice! She immediately welcomed us and showed us an upstairs room and downstairs room. We chose the downstairs room which, to my surprise, had 4 beds! This worked out great for us since it was a total of 6 traveling but the room with 4 beds was perfect for my sister, aunt, mom, and myself! Typically when we've rented a room for 4 it means we will have to share but not here! The first thing I noticed when we walked in was how clean the rooms were. A definite scent of cleaning products, though not overwhelming. This was such a refreshing change for us, as we had just came from the rental Casa Blanca and that place smelled like mildew! This place was clean and the AC felt great! Once we selected our rooms, Isabel asked if we would like some fruit and that was a YES!

We finished settling in and went out to the small dining area where Isabel brought us all a fruit plate including banana, mango, papaya, pineapple and also brought us a mango fruit juice! The mango and papaya was so sweet and delicious! This was a perfect snack for us since we had a busy day as it was our last day in CR - we had a 6:50 am flight the next day.

People in our party did different things and when I returned with my sister (about 9 pm) we found our mom and aunt hanging out in the kitchen area. We had needed to return our car rental and so everyone was kind of on their own as far as finding dinner. Our mom and aunt told us that even though we had dropped them off where there was food, they had just wanted a hot soup. They asked Isabel if she had food and Isabel quickly made them a great chicken soup, hot, just like they like it! My mom and aunt had also brought a mango and papaya at a local store and seeing how we couldn't bring it back to the USA, they asked Isabel if they had a knife we could borrow to cut up the fruit. Isabel said she would cut it for them and we all enjoyed the fruit in the cute open sitting area they have.

The next morning (Monday) we had an early flight (6:50 am) and so we needed to be at the airport by 5 am. I had been communicating with Javy via email and he had advised they worked with a taxi who charged $16 to the airport and they could coordinate this for us. We asked Isabel to coordinate this for us and she was able to get one cab for 6 of us plus our luggage for that price. (Initially the taxi was saying they would need to send 2 which would each cost $16 but Isabel helped arrange one van that worked and the taxi was accommodating as well!) We appreciated Isabel helping us save some money! Isabel had told us the night before they'd have fruit for us for breakfast and sure enough, they did. Fresh fruit again with our choice of mango or pineapple juice (both were excellent!). We enjoyed our quick, fresh breakfast as we left. I honestly did not want to leave! To summarize, here's what we loved about Hotel Javy:

-Excellent customer service! Great hospitality by entire staff!
-Cleanliness! Rooms smelled clean and fresh plus no bugs!
-Included welcome fruit and breakfast - great!
-Safety - the hotel is gated and we felt safe!
-Value - great price for what's included
-Location - close enough to walk to local soda's, bakery
-Free WiFi!

I highly recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: Downstairs rooms might be easier - otherwise will need to take luggage upstairs and bring back downs...

Though I'd made a reservation, I hadn't jotted down the physical address of the hotel (tip: you might wish to do that now...) and the rental car's GPS couldn't find it. However GPS *was* able to find Hotel Liberia, so we stopped there to use their WiFi and get Javy's address. Once we found it online, it was ~5 minutes drive to make our way to Hotel Javy.

(Note: Hotel Javy is located about a block past the hospital. It's not on the main drag, but there may be some advantages to that.)

Hotel Javy is surrounded by a large security gate, which should put anyone with a rental car at ease. Secure parking! On the flip side, it did make the entrance tricky to find. My travel companion walked straight into a neighbor's living room looking for the registration desk. The startled local jumped up from watching TV and escorted us marauding tourists around the corner back over to the security gate, waving at the registration desk to get them to open it, which allowed us to drive in.

No one onsite knew English, but we were welcomed with big smiles and an acknowledgement of who we were once I said my name. As I signed the guest book, plates of fruit and smoothies appeared. Isabella even gave us a tour of her garden where her fruit grows: mangoes, bananas, figs, and more.

My reservation had been made in English via email with Javier. I wasn't sure who Javier was, but - if I understood the translation correctly - Javier is Isabella's son and is a student. When questions about scheduling an early morning taxi to the airport became too complex for elaborate pantomime, Javier was called to speak with me directly. He was as friendly as everyone else, and speaks fine English.

We arrived before the standard 2 PM check-in and they were still cleaning rooms. Even so, Isabella let us drop off our bags so we could get them out of the rental car before heading off to Rincon de la Vieja for the day. (Hacienda Guachipelin is well worth the trip. It's ~30 minutes north.)

After the day's activities, we dropped off the rental car at Budget and Budget's shuttle returned us to Hotel Javy. The night staff opened the security gate to let us in. (As a side, the Budget employee who took us back to Hotel Javy said that he knew exactly where the hotel was because he liked to meet friends at a local bar about one block away, around the corner from the hotel. He raved about the bar's ceviche. If you're staying longer and like to explore local spots, you might ask hotel staff about which direction to head for that.)

Several other guests must have arrived throughout the night because at 4:30 AM when we left for LIR, the lot was filled with 4 or 5 cars. And of course, there was Isabella with her fruit and smoothies -- at 4:30 AM! We were sent off with a big hug and lots of smiles. Mi casa es su casa.

Hotel Javy earns an A+ in hospitality. The rooms are simple, clean, and air conditioned. Water pressure and temperature in the shower was great. Even breakfast is included, like a Hampton Inn but at half the rate. Plus, they have a taxi driver / friend who will get you to the airport for a discounted price of $16. (Or so we were told it was discounted. I didn't check around for deals on taxi drivers so maybe we were skunked on that. At any rate, Mr. Jesus was friendly and showed up on time.)

In short: A traditional Costa Rican hotel (not a chain hotel!) with over-the-top service.

When we arrived at this hotel we were greeted and offered a plate of home grown fruits and fruit batidas. We were then given a great, clean, quiet, air conditioned large room. It was a very safe and secure gated hotel. Our laundry was perfectly cleaned for a very reasonable price. The next morning we were given the most generous and delicious breakfast of our whole Costa Rican vacation. We would certainly stay at this hotel again.

We are a family of four and enjoyed our stay here and found it to be a god bargain. The hotel is just off the main drag, so was quiet but convenient. The gated parking allowed us to rest easy, and the rooms were large enough for us to spread out. Best of all was the service. Isabella was friendly, and served an excellent breakfast, with fresh fruit, smoothies to die for, and the typical Costa Rican fare.

Our family of 4 from Merritt, BC, Canada took a trip to Liberia for 2 weeks. Hotel Javy was our last stop. When we arrived we had a very warm welcome with fresh fruit and smoothies. They picked the mangos from their tree right outside the hotel. They put us up in the huge room with 4 very comfortable beds. It was great, everyone had their own bed. The staff was very friendly. Isabel was a super host. She treated us like we were one of the family. Isabel if you are reading this you are awesome person.

Room Tip: Top corner rooms are very large. There were 4 of us and we had a bed each.
