The hotel's location is amazing, on a bluff overlooking the spectacular Bahia Salinas, with Isla Bolanos front and center. As my 8-year-old said, gazing at the view, "I can't imagine a more beautiful setting." I loved the beach, windswept and wild, with big tidal variations adding interest and great adjacent beaches you can reach by walking around headlands.
The rooms are definitely basic, and some are in disrepair. We had two rooms and they didn't have any issues: they were clean, the mattresses were just fine, and the water and windows worked. One room had no hot water, which we knew about so that was no problem, but do make sure you check. And the hot water in the other room lasted for a minute or so before turning tepid, not a big deal for us given the warm climate but it could be for some.
The food was surprisingly good, some dishes really excellent, especially compared to the alternatives that we tried. But the service was amazingly slow, even for a laid-back place like this. The management really needs to improve the efficiency and priorities of the wait staff, and add at least one more person during mealtimes, which would really change the whole dining experience.
Front-desk staff was very friendly and eager to help, but again some better management is needed. E.g. one evening I needed a new towel only to be told that the maid had the only key for the linen closet and she had gone home. Say what?
We didn't expect luxury and we knew about and appreciated the remote setting, so we weren't disappointed by any of that. Yes, you could find a much more organized hotel experience at EcoPlaya (although read the mixed reviews of its cleanliness etc.), but you'll also deal with big crowds and loud music thumping away from the bar, at least during busy times. If you want peace and quiet, a stunning location and great food, and can put up with the basic rooms and slow service, then you should have a great time here. And if the management gives the service a bit more attention then it could be a fantastic getaway spot.
