“Amazing oasis of tropical beauty with volcano views!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2011

This resort surpassed anywhere else we stayed. Our room was beautiful with uniquely appointed native furniture and luxurious bedding, a stone shower with orchids growing on the walls, private jacuzzi on the deck with a view of the volcano- french doors that open up to the amazing flowers blooming and you can watch hummingbirds, tucans, monkies, etc. right from your room! We loved the heated swimming pool and the restaurant had fabulous food and more volcano views! The spa is incredible! All the staff was nice and most helpful as we planned several trips to the Hanging Bridges, zip line, rafting and the hot springs.

What an amazing resort. Very unique. I liked the fact that I couldn't see other buildings on the property from my accommodations. The other buildings are hidden by the lush tropical rain forest in which the resort is built. The complimentary buffet breakfast combined favorites with local faire. The lunch and dinnder menus are extensive, and everything was delicious. The staff at Lost Iguana are extremely friendly, courteous and professional. They all speak English, and when I tried to communicate in Spanish they were very enthusiastic and helpful in aiding my attempts.
My girl friend and I enjoyed two couples' massages while at Lost Iguana; what an amazing experience. The spa is very tranquil and soothing...before anyone even started the massage. We were in the same room during our massages, there was a small fireplace burning, incense burning, and the sound of the river just a stone's throw away added to the peaceful environment. Bird watchers were enthralled by the variety of 300 species around. We heard howler monkeys while walking the trails that wind through part of 80 acres of unspoiled rain forest on the property.
On the last night of our stay, a band and dancers from a local high school entertained us at the restaurant after dinner. Awesome performances, and kudos to Lost Iguana for supporting local talent.
I could have stayed on the property for my entire stay--it's that peaceful, unique and all-encompassing. But I did venture out a couple days. Nearby are great zip lines, hanging bridges, and white-water rafting. A large group of cyclists checked in my last night at Lost Iguana, and they were looking forward to cycling the local roads (which don't have much traffic).
Oh, and then there are the views of the volcano. I'm not sure what elevation the resort is, which is on the side of a mountain, but we had great views of the volcano, which has an elevation of 5400 feet.

We had a wonderful time at Lost Iguana. The hotel is in the middle of the rain forest and on a hill. It is wet there but the temperature is great. The location is close to lots of things to do - hiking, hanging bridges, zip lines, hot springs...... We had great views of the volcano from our room and being on a hill, each room felt like you are the only ones there. Everyone in our party loved the food and the feel of the hotel. We will definitely be recommending this hotel.

We travelled to several different places in while in Costa Rica and this one was by far our favorite. We had a two bedroom upstairs condo with a beautiful view of the volcano and hills. We loved it so much that we are going back this February without kids and only staying at this hotel. It is out of the way but with a car you can go to nearby attractions like the hot springs and zip lines. Our room had a microwave and small fridge so you could bring in groceries so that you don't have to go out for every meal.

Our favorite attractions were the zip lines, swinging bridges and couples massage.

The rooms here are amazing. We had our own balcony with a volcano view, which you could also see from the very cozy canopy bed, and we loved sleeping with all of the rainforest sounds around us. We never made use of the hot tub on the balcony because it always had bugs in it, but it was outside, so that's probably expected. Inside the room was very clean and had tons of space. The grounds are difficult to walk but they have buses that will bring to to and from your room, which seems silly but the hills are really not so much fun in the rain. We loved the naturalist guide, and it wasn't too far from the volcano or trails. It is far from restaurants, which is unfortunate because their's feels like a cruise ship and the food isn't very good, but that was really our only complaint.

My wife and i stayed with our 10 & 12 year old kids at this resort 12/19-22/10. We had a Luxury Suite and standard connecting room. The luxury suite is nice and roomy. The standard room is, well, small and just standard. The Luxury room had an outdoor shower. However, we ended up using the regular shower in the standard room, as we showered at night, and it was too chilly at night to shower outdoors.
The resort is located 25-27 minute drive out of La Fortuna, with a beautiful view of the volcano and countryside. YOU MUST HAVE A RENTAL CAR, otherwise, you are stuck at the resort. I would not stay at La Fortuna as it is a small, busy, city. Lost Iguana is in a secluded, peaceful location. There are trails around the resort. Hikes that should last 1-2 hours. The hikes were fun, mildly strenious, but well worth the trip.
The food at the resort restaurant seems good, but it also seems very expensive. We only breakfast at the hotel (included in our cost). With a rental car, there are many other quality options 10-15 minutes away. I recommend El Novillo (look for the very large statute of a white bull at the front of the restaurant) and Cascajo's del Arenal (apprx 1KM west of Tabacon Spa on the main road)
The reason i did not give the resort 5 stars is that it seems that they have dropped the ball on maintenance of the rooms. While our rooms were comfortable, and nicely decorated, the AC thermostat in the Luxury suite was broken, both bathroom doorlocks were broken, the outdoor hot tub in the Luxury suite was out of order. With a more aggressive maintenance program, the hotel would have been perfect. One last "complaint" and complement, at this price, they should have WIFI in the rooms, not just in the lobby. The off site gift store is large, with a great selection. The prices are very reasonable for a hotel, i do recommend you check it out.
Overall, i would stay at this location again. I think better management could solve the maintenance problems easily.

We stayed for 2 nights at the Lost Iguana as part of our weeklong trip through CR. We arrived late in the evening after a long ride from San Jose which included a Whitewater rafting trip. We were taken to our room via golf cart since the property is quite large and hilly. When we first entered the room the musty smell was overwhelming. Even the bellman seemed apologetic when he entered the room. My wife quickly got on the phone and after several calls was able to get us an acceptable room. It took quite a while to get the bellman to return to move our bags to our new room.
Once settled, we were able to enjoy the property. We saw exotic birds including our first Toucan. Breakfast at the hotels is included but get there early. We arrived on the later side and found very little left. The waiters were not interested unless asked.
