“A nice resort in a jungle setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2014

We visited the Lost Iguana in July for 3 days and it rained off and on each day, but we had our rain gear and the weather did not stop use from doing activities in the area The hotel is well sited to take advantage of zip lining, hanging bridges, horse back riding, and white water rafting. Hikes on the extensive property are also possible. It is also near an elaborate thermal spring that we did not have time to see. We found the staff to be first rate from reception to restaurants, and all spoke good English. After we left, they went to considerable effort to retreive and mail back to us a Kindle that was left behind. We had most of our meals at the hotel restaurant, and although not gourmet, we had no complaints. Our second floor room had a great view of the volcano which we finally saw (at least 90%) on our last day. My wife and grand-daughter especially enjoyed the large heated pool with swim up bar.

Our first floor luxury room with outdoor shower and Jacuzzi was perfect and compensated for the rainy weather. The room was always clean but there were some bugs because you're in the RAINforest. The outdoor porch with rocking chairs provided a perfect view of Arenal Volcano when the clouds cleared. The grounds have several well marked trails which provide great hikes. There are both a warm and cold water pool for swimming. Most guests come to the pool for happy hour between 4 and 5. Luis the bartender is fantastic. The gift shop is exceptional with many high quality Costa Rican crafts.
The food in the restaurant was only fair. The resort is 18 kilometers from the town of Last Fortuna via a winding road so a car is recommended. The front desk arranges tours which can pick you up at the front desk. A plus is that the resort is close to the volcano, Lake Arenal and the Hanging Bridges.

Room Tip: Get a lower level room with outdoor twin showers and Jacuzzi.

We stayed here in July, to see the volcano, but it rained the entire three days that we were here, and the most we saw was about a quarter to a half of the volcano in the afternoons when it stopped raining for a bit. The room itself was nicely done and very clean. We had a king luxury suite, with a jetted tub on a private balcony, a kitchenette and a large bathroom - had it not been the rainy season, we would have had an amazing view of the volcano and surrounding area. The service at the resort was average at best, we got there late and were simply given a map to find our room, no offer to help with bags or information on where to park (you need to drive to your room from the main lodge). The restaurant is just ok, breakfast in included and is a buffet - dinner was flavorless. This entire Arenal Volcano area is all about tourists, so everything is over priced and under value, not the real Costa Rica at all. Did not see any wildlife at the resort or anywhere in the surrounding area. This entire area (including this resort) is heavily traveled, with crowds of tourists everywhere. Wifi is only available in the main lobby.

The Lost Iguana and Arenal were the first leg of our 12 day trip to CR -- our first time. We had some trepidation about booking a resort in a remote area of a foreign country; we made our decision based on positive Trip Advisor reviews. The resort and our time in the jungle were absolutely magical -- a great kickoff to a fantastic trip. I agree with the reviewers who remind you that if you are expecting fancy American amenities or roses on your bed, try elsewhere such as The Springs, which is very expensive. But if you want a beautiful resort in a lush and exotic locale, this is truly a gem. Our room was tastefully appointed to emphasize the natural setting. We woke up each morning to views of the volcano and abundant wildlife. We had a car and drove to nearby excursions such as Sky Trek and The Springs on a day pass -- both about a half an hour away. At night we relaxed by the heated pool; the bartender and all the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Loved!

My family (myself, husband and 17 yo daughter) spent 3 nights at this beautiful resort. It does have a view of the volcano but it was cloudy and raining on and off during our stay, which was fine, we were prepared for rain. We had a room on the second floor. We did have an a gecko in our room but no big deal. And there was a dehumidifier which helped keep the room a bit more comfortable. The room was nice but the lighting was dim especially in the bathroom where there was no lighting in the shower at all. The grounds were beautiful and we were able to watch the hummingbirds and butterflies visit the flowers under our balcony. The breakfast buffet was good and changed a bit daily. The waitstaff was nice and helpful. Since the hotel is not close to anything we did eat all our meals there (except the one at the hot springs). The food was very good and variety was also. It is true that we only had dependable wifi in the reception area although I was led to believe this was only due to the fact that they had a lightening strike the day before we came that took out all the computers and the wifi in the rooms but I may have been misled on this since past guests mention that the wifi was only found in the reception. We did see a coati mom and her playful babies passing by while dining in the restaurant during a lunch and that was a real treat. While there we did enjoy the walk in the Hanging Bridges, ziplining at Sky Trek and hot spring Ecotermales where we also enjoyed an excellent bountiful meal as well as some relaxing in the hot spring pools. With the time we had at the end of one day we did enjoy a walk through one of the trails on the property. The trails are not well kept and we probably went on the one that is most used. It is a bit wild but not overly but we like that kind of thing. Overall, Lost Iguana Resort and Spa is a beautiful property and we had an enjoyable stay although it seemed understaffed at times and there was a feeling that the property owner was frugal so the service was not as good at it could have been.

We went to Costa Rica for the first time (late June, early July). We stayed here the entire time.

First, some things about CR.
1) rainforest is awesome
2) it WILL rain (get over it, it's rarely that cold when it does).
3) bring rain jackets
4) US $ is taken everywhere
5) best activities in order from best to lamest: zip lining (sky track), rappelling, high bridges, white water rafting (barely any rapids), hot springs.

Lost iguana pros:
1) beautiful scenery
2) secluded and often quiet

Lost iguana cons:
1) too many bugs in rooms (we had a luxury room).
2) where is management??? Front desk kids didn't know much when asked.
3) takes 20 min longer to get to sights/activities because so secluded.
4) too many bugs
5) wifi only in lobby
6) did I mention the rooms have a lot of bugs (especially the bathroom).
7) only 1 restaurant
8) too many damn bugs in the bathroom!!!

Summary: although we had a pretty good time in CR, we would not come back to the lost iguana. The only place we would go to is Tabacon. We picked up people here on the activity bus. It's a far better resort.

We stayed two nights at the Lost Iguana. The room was beautifully done in a rustic style, and quite comfortable. But we were simply blown away by the view. When it was not cloudy or foggy (which it was a bit more than we would have preferred) we had an amazing view of the volcano. I haven't had a room with a view like this Mena House in Cairo.

The resort is a tad remote, so unless you have a car/taxi, or are on an excursion, you'll be dining at the resort restaurant. That was not an issue for us, as we found the food to be quite tasty, especially their soups. The breakfast buffet did vary a little each day as well.

Combined with the pleasant demeanor of the staff, we would definitely return given the opportunity.
