We booked the Arenal Volcano & Rainforest walk through Apple Vacations. We had pre-paid for this trip, but needed to confirm the date with the Apple Rep once we got to our hotel. We stayed at the Allegro Papagayo and the Apple Rep's in Costa Rica are provided by Swiss Travel. The Rep at our hotel , Fabio, is less than worthless, and that is being kind. We confirmed the reservation for Monday February 11. When the shuttle arrived to pick up passengers, we not even on his list. If my husband hadn't talked to the driver and provided him documentation we would not have been able to go.
The rest of the Swiss Travel people were great. This is a wonderful, tour, just be advised it's a long day. We traveled by shuttle into Libeira and boarded the bus to go to the Volcano. It's about a three hour drive from Liberia. Our tour guide, Lawrence (spelled differntly) was very knowledgable. We had a nice lunch, then boarded a boat that took us around Lake Arenal. Stopped in the middle to take pictures of the Volcano from the lake. We could see gases escaping from the top of the Volcano. It was an awesome sight. We then traveled to the edge of the lake by bus to go on the rainforest walk. We were able to take more close up pictures of Arenal Volanco at the beginning of the rainforest walk. We were lucky, as the day was warm and very clear, so we could see the top of the volcano. Many people don't get to see the top, if it's a cloudy day. Our group was split into two groups. Ours was lead by William, who had climbed the actual Volcano about 8 times. He had pictures of when the Volcano has erupted, also explained all the eruptions and the deaths that were caused. Pictures were fantastic. They are expecting the volcano to erupt again, just don't know when. The Rainforest walk was very interesting, although we didn't see any animals, it was too clear of a day and the animals were just not out. From the rainforest walk we went to the hot springs and spent a little better than an hour there. We then went to dinner at a hotel very close the the Volcano and had the opportunity to take more pictures.
I would recommend this tour, even though it's a very long day! A chance in a life time to see a Volcano.
