If your fit, have some hiking experience and enjoy this kind of thing, do it. This is one seriously beautiful hike.
We started at the hotel near the waterfall, paid $10. and off we went. We wore breathable clothes and good hiking boots. The trail, once in the forest was steep, all roots and mud. The vegetation was lush and just being there was an amazing experience for us.
Once we reached the summit we were rewarded with spectacular views of Arenal. It was thankfully, perfectly clear for us. We then started our downward trek to the lagoon. This is where it could have gone bad. My wife lost her balance and fell off the trail. Fortunately she did not go far. I helped her out of the thicket and she was not hurt. The emerald green lake and view of Arenal combined was otherworldly and strikingly beautiful.
We then headed back and had to keep a keen eye on every step down as slippery mud and exposed roots are there to take you down if your not paying attention.
I read reviews on the net before this hike and was contemplating not doing it. We are both so glad we did, it's tough but not that bad. My wife had a full hip replacement 4 months prior, but she's a determined gal. I was huffing and puffing a bit, she thought it was fairly easy. Watching your footing is the major concern in my opinion and rain would most definitely make things far more dangerous.
