“Amazing Anniversary Trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2009

Stayed at the Pacuare Lodge December 11-13th for our 5th year anniversary....It was the most spectacular and restful place ever.

The raft ride in was fairly easy as it was class I & II rapids. Good introduction to the trip. Our guide Antonio was so laid back that he made the raft ride enjoyable for all.

The lodge was beautiful. My husband and I stayed in the honeymoon suite. Nothing prepared us for the luxury of it. Pictures do not do it justice. The infinity pool and personal look out point was the bonus. One thing to note is that this suite is far up the side of the hill, it is a steep climb, but it helped burn off the calories from the amazing food that Warner prepared. Really, no one should eat that well in the middle of the rain forest.

I partook in the early morning bird walk. It started at 6am and concluded around 8am. It was fun to walk the grounds with binoculars and telescope with my guide and see all the birds. He had amazing eye sight and listening skills, I bet we must of seen at least 20 different birds and butterflies. He was so informative. Sorry but his name is escaping me, but he was the manager.

The best part of this trip is that I had secretly arranged with Pacuare Lodge for a romantic dinner for myself and my husband. Warner met with me and we discussed the menu. While I entertained my husband at the main lodge, the staff slipped up to our room (no small feat) and set up a romantic setting for us on our porch. A nice table beautifully set with candles, flowers. 2 tiki lamps added to the nuance, along with tea lights lighting the way to our suite. They also put tea lights along the side of the pool and floated flowers with tea lights on them in the pool. It was gorgeous. Then the manager and Warner, personally brought our food up to us (again no small feat) course by course. Warner out did himself with that meal. It was the best ever.

We also did the hike to the 2 waterfalls. They were beautiful and worth the hike. It should be noted that at this time, it was usually clear in the morning, but tended to rain for an hour or so each afternoon, but it is the rain forest.... Again it just forces you to hang out either at the main lodge or in your hammock reading a book. It was just so peaceful.

This lodge is amazing and you can't help but feel relaxed when you leave, but exhilarated at the same time by the class III & IV raft ride out. At all times we felt safe and just had an absolute blast.

It is the staff that really makes this place. They go so out of their way to make your stay memorable. I agree with others that say 2-3 days is enough there. But I will definitely go there again - no hesitation

Not for those who like 5 star hotels but if you're up for something different this is a fantastic adventure. The bungalows are lovely. The staff and service is outstanding. The food is the best that we had on 2 weeks in Costa Rica. I'd recommend 4 days max but that gives you enough time to do most of the fantastic activities aswell as some quality time in the hammock. No TV, no internet, no deadlines, no stress. I am recommending it to all my friends

We stayed only 1 night at this beautiful hotel in the jungle, though we did their 2 day rafting tour. Getting to the hotel was hilarious - an adventure in itself. You are picked up and taken down the river through beautfiul scenery by raft. The whole excursion is incredibly well organized by dedicated, personable staff and the hotel is a true delight...
Pacuare Lodge is an eco-hotel, so there is no electricity in your cabina, don't think for a minute though that this is not a 5 star luxurious place to stay. The lanterns you will use will add to the fun and romanticism, and you will feel again and again how well conceived their eco-tourism concept & attitude is. You will always feel well taken cared of, in stunning, unique surroundings.
The food was some of the best we tasted in Costa Rica and the restautant/bar area a delight to be in. There is no TV, no hotel music, just you in the jungle with wonderful food, long drinks, delightful staff and the company of the other guests who will be there for the same reason as you - to experience the beauty of the river & the jungle.

We would love to go back!

We spent 3 nights at Pacuare during our Honeymoon in Costa Rica. There really are no words to describe how incredible the experience was. We stayed in the honeymoon bungalow, which was gorgeous, romantic, and completely unique. The entire grounds of Pacuare were spectacular. The staff could not have been nicer or more welcoming. You get to know them well, as our white water guide was also the bar tender, and our masseur was also our zip line guide! The food was the best we had on our entire trip; fresh and creative dishes for every meal. Part of our honeymoon package included a romantic dinner, which was adorable. But to be honest, every meal was special and romantic there. We did a lot of the activities at the lodge, like white water rafting, zip-lining, hiking, and all were very fun, and lead by very professional guides; we felt very safe the whole time.

Pacuare was the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation, of meeting great people and being totally alone. You can spend the morning doing a tour/activity or talking to new people at the bar, and then lounge in your room totally undisturbed for the afternoon.

Pacuare is not for everyone though; we had an occasional bug in our room (mostly butterflies though) and there is no electricity, and the walls are mostly screens, so all night long you listen to the sounds of the jungle. For us, this was absolutely a highlight, and made the whole experience more fun and romantic, but if you're not into nature, this may not be for you. But even though it was "rustic" in some ways, this was absolutely a luxurious place to stay.

We cannot wait to go back.

Just completed a 2 day, 1 night trip to Pacuare lodge. Gentle introduction on day 1 - class I/II rapids. Great guide in Antonio, charming, knowledgeable and always helpful.
The bungalows are set in rainforest and isolated from each other. Large double beds, big en suite and balcony. Note the rooms do not have electricity - candles and torches only, which adds not takes away from the experience. The food prepared was fabulous - especially cooked pineapple with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream. It was amazing what they could rustle up so far from civilisation.
day 2 is the serious rafting class III/IV, be prepared to get wet ++ ( wear swim shorts/costume ), but great adrenaline rush. It all passed too quickly, but I'm sure we'll be back one day.

This is one of my favorite vacation experiences ever. This was my first experience rafting and they did a great job with teaching us about how to do it.

Unfortunately we were only able to stay one night since there was so much else to see in Costa Rica but we really enjoyed our time. We had a garden view bungalow that had a king-sized bed. I got some of the best sleep that I've ever had out there in the middle of the jungle with the screened in walls. There was a small porch and then a bathroom down a hallway behind the sleeping area. I was scared to get up and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night since I didn't know what kind of creepy crawlies might be back there. We definitely found some large spiders back there in the morning so this place may not be the best choice for anyone who doesn't want to get in touch with nature.

The meals were wonderful, especially the amazing dinner they cooked for us. I never thought that such a classy meal could be served in the middle of the jungle! It was very nice being able to hang out at the bar upstairs before dinner and read a book. And the wine cellar was huge!

Unfortunately it rained the whole time we were there so we didn't get to explore too much. Definitely a unique experience not to be missed and well worth the cost.

The Pacuare Lodge was the first stop on our Costa Rican vacation, and was definitely the most memorable. From the rafting to the gourmet food to the romantic bungalows; it was all unbelievable. I think part of what made it so special was the sense of community you develop from rafting with a team and then sharing the journey over wine in the evening. The staff also contributes to the warm feeling, and work to design the perfect experience, whether you are looking for adventure, romance, or just relaxation.

Our bungalow was gorgeous, and with only candle light in the evenings, the setting was truly ethereal. We had a large terrace that overlooked the river, and slept soundly with the sounds of the jungle and river in the background. We loved the food, and the wine cave has quite an extensive selection. The banana pancakes in the morning were the best we ever had.
The rafting was our favorite activity, and we managed to handle the class 4 rapids without flipping over, thanks to our fantastic guide. We were inexperienced rafters, but the guides do a great job navigating and teaching you what you need to do, so you have a blast but feel safe. The scenery around the Pacuare River is stunning, and we really felt connected to nature in a way that we didn’t anywhere else on our trip. I recommend the experience highly to all types of travelers. For us it was the perfect blend of nature and luxury.
