“perfect place if you do not need electricity”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2014

To reach the lodge you have first to pass a terrible street by 4wd. you never want to do this trip back. Our room was absolute perfect large clean luxory with a little private pool.
now the matters which I did not like:
You had to walk always 10 to 15 Minutes to your room and the way was extremly steep app. 200 m in heigh difference.
In the room there is no electricity, so to recharge your touch brush camera iphone pc ipad and e reader you had to carry all the stuff to the office for recharging. At this place and only there you can access the slowest internet connection of Cost Rica
All the rest was perfect good food friendly people

Possibly the most amazing place I've ever stayed. The wonderful experience started from the minute we got into the van to drive to our rafting site. Our guide, Ivan, is incredibly knowledgeable and charismatic, making friends out of a group of strangers by the time we reached the rafts. The rafting trip was fun (even in the rain) and even as novices we felt very safe. We stayed in a Linda Vista suite and it was a bit like heaven on earth. Unlike a lot of hotels, the on-line pictures of the rooms are exactly what you get. The food was top-notch and all of the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. We didn't do any of the excursions, but we did have breakfast in the Nest one morning, which we highly recommend. It rained almost the entire time we were there, and we felt damp most of the time, but the overall experience was definitely worth it (it is the rainforest after all).

This was the last place we stayed in Costa Rica and thank goodness because nothing else could compare, even though we had already stayed in some wonderful places. From the moment we were picked up at our hotel to the time we were dropped back off at another hotel in San Jose, the service by Pacuare staff was impeccable.

The rafting was absolutely wonderful. The guides are so knowledgeable, friendly, and fun, they put you right at ease on the water and make the whole experience amazing.

The food we ate at Pacuare was hands-down the best we had in all of Costa Rica.

The room (we stayed one night in a river view suite) was magical.

We did zip lining the afternoon we got there and it was so much fun.

One of the best parts about Pacuare is getting to know the people you are travelling with as well as the guides who are also the staff at the lodge. Even though our whole trip was about 36 hours, we met and got to know some amazing people.

If and when we go again, i'd like to stay for 3 nights in one of the suites with the pool and get to spend more time relaxing at the lodge.

I completely agree with the magnificent reviews that precede mine. You don't have to be a honeymooner to fall in love with Pacuare. My wife and I turn 60 this year, have been married for almost 38 years and our experience at Pacuare Lodge was truly magical.

Even though we were in the middle of a jungle with no electricity in our suite, we felt as though we were in a special slice of heaven. Going to sleep to the roar of the river rapids and awaking to the chirping of birds was unlike anything we've ever experienced. We stayed in a River Suite and it was luxurious. The food was outstanding and the massage was amazing. The Canopy Adventure a/k/a zipline) was much better than the one we experienced in Kauai, mostly because Giovanni and Heraldo were so wonderful and experienced.

I'd like to pass along a couple of tips that might prove useful. First of all, be prepared to raft in and raft out. If you do not plan to experience the whitewater rafting, you will miss out on a major part of the fun. The guides who navigate the rafts are extraordinary (special kudos to Roberto) and, believe me, they will take care of you. No worries, Pura Vida.

Second, don't be surprised when it rains in a rainforest. That comes with the territory and it is lovely. Be prepared to get wet. Don't expect DisneyWorld. Nor Camelot (but it is close).

Third, try to get to know the other guests at the Lodge. The kind of person who seeks out what Pacuare Lodge has to offer is different from the tourist you will find on a cruise ship. The stories you will hear are special.

Fourth, don't worry if you don't have a waterproof camera while rafting (but if you have a GoPro, bring it). One of the guides in a kayak will run ahead of the rafts and set up some stunning photographs and videos. Enjoy the experience!

Finally, if Pacuare Lodge is part of a longer trip to Costa Rica, pack two suitcases. The one for the remainder of the trip will be dropped at the warehouse in Siquirres before your first raft in and you will retrieve it when you raft out. The one for the Lodge needs to be small enough to fit in a dry bag that is transported by raft. Everyone looks fabulous by candlelight so don't worry about what you wear. Pura Vida!

10+++ STARS!!! If you are looking for the most perfect place to stay during your trip to Costa Rica, Pacuare Lodge is it. HANDS DOWN. Every wonderful thing said about this place is TRUE. I don't even know where to begin!!!...We visited Costa Rica for our honeymoon in December and our experience there was one of the most amazing times of our life. I feel like there aren't enough words to express it!!!! We received VIP service from the beginning of our trip, until the end. All of the guides are so much fun, super friendly, very attentive, and hilarious!! They really are the heartbeat of Pacuare Lodge. Get to know them! You won't regret it. They are a wealth of knowledge and really made our entire trip. Our accommodations were OUT OF THIS WORLD. Luxury in the jungle!!!! We stayed in the Laura, one of the Linda Vista suites. It was well worth the extra penny! We enjoyed our private pool and our HUGE outdoor shower. The privacy, sound of the river below, and the open air concept = HEAVEN. The attention to detail in the design/decor is insane! I feel like the photos don't do it justice, you really have to see it/live it to understand. We originally requested the Canopy Suite, but it was unavailable. I'm so glad it was, b/c the Linda Vista Suites are more private. In addition to the impeccably appointed suites, the food was AMAZING. Each day we had THE MOST delicious meals. We really were impressed with the food while staying in the middle of the jungle, especially since everything has to be rafted in and out. 5 stars!! As far as activities while you are there, there are plenty of options. We enjoyed the Canopy tour (a must!!), horseback riding to a local village (where Pacuare Lodge's amazing bartender Estevan's grandmother made us a fabulous lunch and showed us around her farm - such a great experience!), and a hike to the waterfalls on the property (tip: request that a guide take you to the "waterslide", in particular Max - if he is there during your stay. He is a wealth of knowledge and we really enjoyed getting to know him during our hike!). We also enjoyed getting to know the other couples staying at Pacuare. Each night there is a cocktail hour from 5pm - 7pm and we loved hanging out and chatting with everyone about their adventures that day. Pacuare Lodge is such a relaxing place. No need for dressing up or worrying about ANYTHING. There is one building that has WiFi if you MUST use it. My suggestion is to leave your device(s) in your room and enjoy the Pura Vida life for the short amount of time you are there. SUCH an amazing break from the hustle and bustle of every day life. Another amazing aspect of Pacuare is the adventure. I was a little nervous about rafting in and out, and it turned out to be one of my favorite parts!!! Trust your guide!! He won't let you down. We had the most fun on the river!!! If you have the option to ride with Jose or Max, do it! Although, I'm certain you won't be disappointed with ANY of Pacuare's guides. We enjoyed our initial bus ride to the river with Mauricio, our river trip with Jose, hanging out at the bar with Estevan, horseback riding with Henry, talking with Jorge on our exciting canopy tour, hiking to the waterfall with Max - AND rafting out with him, as well as talking with each of the guides at dinner. We had the pleasure of talking with Roberto (one of the owners) at dinner one evening. He really does care about his guests and really does LOVE what he does. Such a nice guy. In fact, every singe guide we spoke with, whether for 5 min. or a couple of hours, really left an impression on us. They are SUCH great guys inside and out. I was actually sad to leave, knowing I may never see them again! You really do connect with the people there and they become "friends" over the course of your stay. I cannot say THANK YOU enough to each of them for taking time to ensure our stay was perfect. I could go on for days about our experience at Pacuare Lodge. Everything was perfect from beginning to end. The attention to detail, organization, laid back "Pura Vida" attitude, and friendliness of the staff combined with the atmosphere and location in the middle of the jungle is a recipe for PEACE, FUN, ADVENTURE, and ULTIMATE RELAXATION. If you are at all hesitant about booking, DON'T BE. Rest assured that your stay will be equally as amazing as ours and you won't regret a single thing. We can't wait to get back to Pacuare Lodge one day...until then, it will reside in a special place in our hearts. THANK YOU to everyone who touched our lives and our hearts while we were there. PURA VIDA!!!! ******TIP: Pack Light. You really DON'T need as much as you think you do. Leave the dress shoes and dress clothes at home or locked away at the warehouse in another bag. Honestly! Pack quick dry clothes, a pair of sandals, something to hike in, a pair of long pants, shorts, a swimsuit, a camera, and basic bathroom necessities. Things are simple in the jungle :).***

Room Tip: Spend the extra money for a Linda Vista Suite! Luxurious, quiet, and SUPER PRIVATE with a personal i...

We stayed at Pacuare Lodge for the first part of our honeymoon (3 days, 2 nights) in mid-January and had an overwhelmingly amazing experience. As mentioned by other reviewers, you are picked up by a nice and clean bus in San Jose and transported a couple of hours to the rafting drop-in point. Our tour guide for the bus ride was Mauricio and he was personable, knowledgeable, and made the trip enjoyable. Our rafting guide was Albaro (aka Boro) and the trip was really fun - since the water is low right now the rapids were not nearly as difficult as I expected, which was nice as we have rafted the Nile River in Africa and I was nervous to have a similarly rough trip. Upon arriving at the lodge we were excited to see that it was just as beautiful, if not more, than the pictures from the website.

We stayed in the Canopy Honeymoon Suite and thought it was fantastic...a very cool room with your own "nest" outlook point in a tree across from the room accessible by a private hanging bridge. Be advised that this room is far removed from the lodge and the other rooms offering complete privacy at the expense of quite a trek up a lot of stairs:) Fine for us but might not be for everyone.

The food was hands-down the best we had during our weeklong tour of Costa Rica. It was super delicious with the perfect sized portions. Great wine selections as well. It is hard to believe that they can provide such awesome gourmet food in the middle of the jungle!

For activities we chose the ziplining and canyoning, which were both fabulous and really fun. The canyoning is more physically challenging and we liked that a lot. We also had a couples massage and that was lovely, too.

Due to the need for catching a flight, we opted on the ground transportation out of Pacuare and it was not for the faint of heart. Our driver (I don’t know his name) kept us safe and on the road, although I don’t know how since it was muddy and he was literally driving us up a mountain. I wished that we could have rafted out as apparently it is a much better experience

To best summarize our time at Pacuare Lodge: 100% AMAZING. The service, food, and overall ambience of the lodge spoiled me. Since that was the first place we stayed I was a bit jaded during the rest of our trip as I found myself comparing every other placed we stayed to Pacuare Lodge and they did not come close to providing a similar experience. It was worth every penny!

A big thanks go to:
• Daisy of Costa Rica Nature Adventures for answering all of my questions and getting everything squared away for a wonderful honeymoon
• Mauricio, our bus tour guide
• Esteban, the bartender and sommelier of sorts
• Andres and Max (aka Sassito), our ziplining guides
• Rafael and Alex, our canyoning guides
• Wilbur, the property manager who reassured us that jaguars will not come and feast on us from the jungle
• And last but not least, Boro, our raft guide, source of entertainment, and overall super awesome guy

Every positive thing that has been said about the Pacuare Lodge is true. We have just come back from a week in Costa Rica. The first part of our trip was organized by Daisy at Aventuras Naturales, the company that Pacuare uses to make reservations. Not only was Daisy so generous with her time in answering my 1.1 million questions over the past few months, but the portion of our trip that she arranged for us was absolutely flawless.

After our one night stay in San Jose, we were greeted in the morning (promptly at 6:10am, as promised) by Gustavo, complete with a large, clean air-conditioned van to take us to the river. Gustavo became not only our transport guide through Costra Rica, but one of our rafting guides, our zip-lining guide and our waiter. We appreciated his expansive knowledge of Costa Rica, his humor and his care in guiding us through our adventures.

When you get to the river put-in, you are given a short tutorial on rafting and sent on your way. Don't worry, this is safe. I'm afraid of everything and I did the rafting. It is worth it to choose to raft-in and raft-out as it is part of what you pay for and I've heard the road route is a little bumpy. Our rafting guides in and out were Juan Carlos and Albero (sp); they were super fun, know their stuff and really enjoy what they do. Rafting out is a little harder than rafting in, but totally doable with great photo opportunities. Note: Please heed the packing instructions Pacuare supplies to you before your trip. You can bring a small, 25lb bag with you to the lodge (as it is rafted in), the rest of your luggage will be secured in their warehouse (you can pick up a rental car here too). Also, long-sleeved shirts and some pants are a good idea. Waterproof shoes are great too.

When we got to the lodge, we were greeted with freshly squeezed juices, a tour of the grounds and lunch. All the staff at the lodge are incredibly friendly and the rooms are fantastic. When you think about how almost every amenity the lodge offers was rafted in, you appreciate the luxury provided a little bit more. We stayed in the River View Suite as we only stayed for one night, however, if we had stayed longer, we would have opted for the Linda Vista Suites simply to lounge in the room. Our suite was gorgeous, well maintained and right on the river, which made for a great noise machine at night; my boyfriend did say it was a little loud for him so if you are a light sleeper, you may want to choose a suite a little farther from the river. The flashlights provided in each room are also a nice touch as it gets very dark at night. Note: While this is definitely a luxury ecolodge, be aware that you are in the middle of the jungle. There are critters and crawlers. This puts the eco in ecolodge. Again, I am scared of everything and was aware of this going into our vacation. While I was a little anxious at night, the lodge is very safe and well-maintained.

The rest of the trip reviews itself. The food at the lodge is actually very impressive. Some of the best meals we had in Costa Rica were at the Pacuare Lodge. The zip-liining was also very fun and the massage that my boyfriend received was great according to him.

We truly had a wonderful time at Pacuare and would go back again with friends and family to show them what "we've" found. Again, we stayed for one night which was good for us as we felt we packed so much into our time from pick-up to our drop-off, however, I believe they recommend two nights and if we did this again, I think that would be our max.

Thank you for a great experience Pacuare, pura vida :)

Room Tip: The River Suite was great and perfect for the two of us for one night. If we stayed longer, we woul...
