A friend and I stayed in rooms 1 and 2 in the main lodge and loved this hotel. We wanted a 'country view' after staying in central Turriabla, and boy, the views are INCREDIBLE. The hotel is situated on the side of a mountain overlooking volcanoes (including one sending out smoke plumes) and beautiful green valleys. So peaceful and relaxing, and less than 10 minutes from central Turriabla.
Room 1 is very nice with a comfortable double bed - it also is a corner room with a wraparound balcony and views in two directions. Room 2 has a comfortable double bed and a single twin bed, with a private balcony facing one direction as well. Both rooms have small but perfectly pleasant and functional bathrooms and are pleasantly decorated with lovely wood paneling everywhere.
Each room only cost $52, which is astonishing value for the money. For example, a hostel dorm bed in central Turriabla costs about $12-15, and so for a couple more dollars three friends could book Room 2 with the double and single beds and enjoy privacy, peace and quiet. Yes, a traveler on a budget has to consider that dinner here is more expensive than in-town (dinner was very good, by the way), but the breakfast is excellent, has great variety and is included in the price.
Just outside the main lodge bedrooms is a large sitting room with several seating areas and overstuffed upholstered couches and chairs. Open to the fresh air, this was a very relaxing and soothing place for us to while away the evening reading (my friend was stretched full-length on a couch) and we enjoyed it when a dramatic thunderstorm exploded over our heads and rain pummeled the roof.
The grounds are lovely. They include a great, fairly easy hike down to a waterfall/natural pool, children's play area and lawns dotted with seats and flowers. There's no swimming pool, but we didn't miss it, especially since Costa Rican mountain areas are a bit cooler than coastal regions.
Several other reviewers have stated that they found the hotel noisy - we didn't, but I could see what could cause such comments. The main lodge is more like a comfortable, private country house rather than a hermetically-sealed American business hotel, but thesis part of its appeal. I heard one friend calling to a friend across the lawn at one point, but then again, I don't really consider this annoying noise. There are rooms further away from the main lodge, and I would guess that these are quieter, since most of the action is in the main lodge.
Overall, highly recommended for families, couples and budget-minded travelers seeking a country respite from the bustling center of Turriabla (but also wants to eat in an excellent restaurant).
