“Lovely European/Costa Rican refuge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2013

We concluded our trip in Costa Rica with a last minute email to Orosi Lodge seeking a room for well after they close. They quickly returned the email, offered the room, and gave us approximate driving time to them from our stop in Guapiles. We were tired and not feeling well when we arrived, but Sebastian greeted us with great cheer and advice at 10 p.m., then offered us the charming chalet where our family of four could spread out and recover. The furnishings were nice, beds comfortable, and views stunning. We loved spending time reading and relaxing on the balcony that looked out at the volcanoes. Breakfast was delicious and served with a flourish. The coffee was spectacular. Loved the Costa Rican crafts and souvenirs for sale in the cafe. Sebastian, Andreas and Connie offered great advice for a day touring the area. We also enjoyed being able to walk from the lodge into Orosi to explore, meet locals, eat dinner and have the town dogs follow us home. This was the perfect way to close out an amazing Costa Rican adventure.

Room Tip: The chalet was a wonderful space for a family.

I loved the four days that I stayed at Orosi Lodge.

The owners, Andreas and Connie, and their son, Sebastian, made it an awesome experience. The conversations with them were like chats with good friends. A lot genuine their words are, as opposed to the business-y talk that most owner/operators engage in.

I had the corner room upstairs. From the balcony there, I had gorgeous views of the volcanoes in the distance and the valley in between. To sit there, watch and think, while sipping coffee was an easy way to forget that life comes with hassles.

I told Connie that I loved the bed stuff and the colors. It felt so unique--not your typical hotel stuff. It is such a unique and original and committed aspect they seem to bring to anything they do.

One evening, when I went to pick up a croissant, Andreas suggested cheese to go with it. He put together a warm croissant/cheese thing, and presented it on a plate with sliced tomatoes with herbs sprinkled on it. Looked so lovely and tasted so yummy.

The lodge is a great place as a base from where you can do a whole lot of activities. Well, if you are a morning person like I am. I was always out the door, after breakfast and everything else, by 730 and was back in the room after the day's activities and lunch by about 230 or 300. In time before the clouds rolled in and started raining. It was then simply awesome to sit on the balcony and watch the clouds and rain and listen to the thunder, all while sipping coffee, or reading, or writing.

A big thanks to the family for making sure I had a great time.

After flying all night, a long drive anywhere when we arrived in CR sounded impossible. Thankfully the Orosi Lodge is only an hour outside San Jose and provided a nice place to rest and get acclimated to CR. Though, we stayed on the lower floor and you can definitely hear everything happening in the room above you. Try to get an upper level room that has a nice view of the volcano from the balcony and no worries of hearing footsteps over your bed. Also, the breakfast skillet is delicious.

Are you on the way from the central CR plateau to the Pacific, Caribbean Sea, the volcanos, or the central mountains this location offers you an excellent overnight stay. You need 30 minutes from Cartago and you are in the Orosi Valley. The lodge and the corresponding chalet is located at the end of the town right at the hillside. We had the chalet for 4 persons and were very satisfied with facility and cleanness of the house. Only the access is a challenging, esp. for parking. The management is very professional and pro-active. The bistro is a must and the breakfast meets the best European standard! The bistro also offers very nice and selected gifts from the region and the country.

We stayed in a triple room downstairs for 2 nights. The German owner was very friendly and we were given a glass of lemonade upon arrival. He gave us an area map and showed to us enthusiastically what to see and where to go. Bring a jacket or a sweater as it gets cool here at night!

The middle room downstairs is nice and clean. The mattress is great and the best part is the comforter, so soft, warm and comfortable! There is not much of a view downstairs, but you can walk upstairs to enjoy the view of the mountains and valley, or you can sit at the cafe as well. There is a small kitchenette but you can't cook there as it only has a few glass, cups and spoons and nothing more. Coffee is provided for free. You can make your own coffee or hot drinks with the coffee maker. There is also a fridge. Breakfast is extra and we didn't try it. We bought some fresh fruits from the local market at a fraction of the cost.

One minor thing is the noise level from upstairs could be loud. You could hear walking as it has a wooden ceiling/floor. I think the owner can mention it to their upstairs customers upon check in not to make excessive noise at night to respect those staying downstairs. I brought ear plugs with me so I didn't hear anything. But my husband, without ear plugs, said he could hear noises occasionally in the middle of the night.

There are some restaurants within walking distance, as the town itself is quite small. There is also a supermarket in town. The "hot spring" pool is right next to the lodge. The owner said that the water was only luke warm.

This lodge is a great place as a base to head up to Irazu Volcano (1 hour drive) and Tapanti National Park (about 20-25 min on a gravel road). We did the loop as well and it really was beautiful! The valley was dotted with coffee plantations.

Stayed at this small and friendly lodge on the basis of previous recommendations and were not disappointed. We were greeted by Andreas and a nice cold home made lemonade and mint and the service was excellent throughout. Unfussy but very clean rooms with all the necessary features. Good parking and nice breakfast all made for a nice stay.

The rooms are really nicely furnished - in every detail. Cou can brew delicious coffee in the kitchen located in the room (and buy more coffee and other souvenirs in the shop of the lodge). The owners were really friendly and helpul. We only stayed there for a stop-over, but would have enjoyed to spend more time.
Don´t miss the great breakfast!
