“Perfect!! No room for improvement!”

Pacuare Lodge

May 20, 2008

This review will be repetitive considering all the others. So be it.

This place by far exceeded our expectations- and that says a lot. Can't say enough about the beauty of the lodge and the warmth of the staff. Our guide, Chamo, seemed to do it all and the manager, Willman, was so incredibly helpful.

The rafting was some of the best we have ever enjoyed, the many hikes our guide brought us on were stunning and we saw so many animals!! There are countless waterfalls around the lodge that will take your breath away.

Our room was simply the garden view one, but it was still beautiful. We visited the honeymoon suite and really regretted not reserving it!!

We met many couples on their own honeymoon and not a negative word was spoken. My new husband and I planted a tree (a mahogany) and named it "Costa Rica Beach Wedding" with our wedding day and names on it. What a cute idea and how lucky we felt to contribute to the beauty of the lodge.

The food. Seriously, it was some of the best food I have ever had. And there was so much!! Vegetable couscous, veal marsala, Dijon tilapia, homemade bread, passion fruit flan..... Mmm.

A beautiful place!! The highlight of our honeymoon!

“Best part of our honeymoon”

Pacuare Lodge

May 13, 2008

I guess this sounds redundant to all of the other reviews but the Pacuare Lodge really was the best part of our trip to Costa Rica. The guides were amazing - extremely knowledgeable, fun, great English skills. The food was delicious and the happy hour was a great time to meet everyone else at the Lodge. The Canopy tour was a blast and the hike to the Waterfalls was beautiful. We stayed in the honeymoon suite and it was absolutely fabulous. The outdoor shower was great. One tip: wait until the end of the day to shower because the water is heated by solar panels. The stream running through our room was so cool and the fresh spring water pool was great although very cold. I loved the fact that there was no electricity and at night our room was lit by candles. Everything was beautiful and well done. I would recommend this to anyone who is feeling a little adventurous.

Stayed here with my wife and four children, aged 16 (girl), 15 (girl), 12 (boy), and 8 (girl). My wife and I had the honeymoon suite, with its own private pool and personal platform overlooking the canopy and river, and the kids occupied 2 river view rooms. All of us - even those less than wildly enthusiastic about the outdoors - loved Pacuare.

This is just about the perfect upscale, "eco-lodge" experience. From the experience of rafting in (and then out the following morning), to the extremely comfortable (even luxurious) accommodations, to the wonderful food, to the canopy zip-line adventure, the Pacuare Lodge strikes just the right balance between making you absolutely aware you are in the wilderness, while still keeping you safe, comfortable and happy.

If we were to do it again, we would stay at Pacuare for two nights and take advantage of more of the repertoire of activities which the lodge offers. A great spot, to which we hope to return.

We stayed for the three day-two night tour, and from start to finish were blown away! The rafting was a blast, and our guide (Andres) was fantastic. Going in I was nervous, having not rafted before, but now am charged for more white waters. The scenery was natures finest travelling down the river, with opportunities to jump out and take a float, and sit under waterfalls.

We stayed in a River View suite. The accomodations were luxorious; fine linens, fresh cut flowers, outdoor shower. Bring some ear plugs, as the river is noisy!

The meals were healthy and wonderfully prepared. and the staff....marvelous people! very kind and supportive.

Our stay at the lodge was by far the highlight of our trip to Costa Rica. The scene was romantic, exciting, healthy, and beautiful.
I would recommend the three day tour, as it gave us time to do some hiking, and relaxing!

We took a red eye after our wedding and arrived in San Jose first thing in the morning. The first stop on our honeymoon was rafting the Pacuare River. The plan was to go straight from the airport out to the Pacuare Lodge (we heard there is no reason to stay in San Jose unless necessary). Getting to the Lodge was an adventure as it required a 90 minute highway drive, followed by a 45 minute off-road drive on class 5 terrain, followed by a zip line gondola across the river (really!...the only other way to get to the Lodge is by rafting in, but we arrived too late to catch a raft). The Lodge was spectacular though and totally worth the effort! It only has about 15 cabins (ours was a river view one) and felt very secluded and romantic. Our cabin was adorned with white drapes, have for post beds (with drapes that double as bug nets), had both an outdoor and indoor shower (with solar heated water…though it was only lukewarm), and had a patio overlooking the river. They do a fantastic job making its ecofriendly aspects seem romantic (as there is no electricity, we dined and illuminated our cabin by candlelight). The food was surprisingly good (including banana pancakes for breakfast and a dinner that included flavorful steak, perfectly rare tuna with a wasabi sauce, and a crème brulee dessert that was more like a flan brulee)!

While there, we did an afternoon nature hike to a waterfall and natural pool and of course rafted. The people that zip lined said it was great, but we chose to sleep in. We had a blast rafting the Pacuare for 4 hours (some class 4, but mostly class 2 and 3) and our guide (Max) was great.

We give this place 5 stars and highly recommend for a great combo of a romantic getaway that includes some fun activities. I will say though that it is not for everyone as most of the activities are for the more active/adventurous, there is no easy access to get there or leave, there is no electricity and limited hot water, and it is in the jungle and there are plenty of critters to be found around the grounds.
