“Interesting!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2014

The view from Irazu Volcano is stunning! This is a perfect one day-picnic trip. Watch out for the Raccoons... They would try to steal your food! Bonus points if you draw something with volcanic rocks :)

“Nice crater but a bit too pricy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2014

Entrance costs $10 (unless you are from Costa Rica) per person, which we felt was too much for what you get.
The road up to the top view point has the biggest holes I've ever seen. Surely they have enough money to redo that short section of road.
The view of the crater is nice, but there are much better looking volcanos throughout Latin America.
I guess if you are not on a backpacker's budget then go and visit.

“Nice day trip from San Jose but go early”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2014 via mobile

Went with private tour by Odessa tours. Great way to see that part of valley. Volcano awesome but air rarified (10,000 feet up) no lake on bottom as in pics for years. Easy walking, clean facilities. Views of valley to ocean. Our driver braved pot holes to save us a 20 min uphill walk to viewpoint tower.
Cartago basilica a must to see. Read the story about why built around the image and be sure to visit the healing waters in the grotto on the grounds. Look to the right of the entrance- ramp down even if not religious. No charge for any. On right side parking with a man directing parking traffic. He will watch the car for a small tip. Looks Like a traffic cop but I think free lances. Everyone seems to know him. As leave church go across plaza and on street on front but left area plaza great grill restaurant.
Lankester gardens close by and worth a short stop.

“Get there early. Beware the lake has gone!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2014

My usual mantra - get there early as it tends to cloud over in the afternoons and the view goes.
I went to the very top this time (it's my second visit) - go to the left after the entrance - right takes you down to the crater. Beware if you are driving the state of the road is pretty terrible with some severe holes in the road enough to wreck tyres and suspension. The view from the top is excellent over the central Valley, out to the coast and the craters themselves. If you walk up there the trees are full of humming birds, but be careful you have plenty of sunscreen on - the sun is very strong at this altitude (3400 m). There is also an altitude effect with the slightly thinner air.
I found going in February the plants are somewhat dried up - my previous visit was August and the umbrella plants were in bloom so the red flowers are spectacular against the grey ash. The main difference is however that the fantastic turquoise lake in the main crater has dried up and the sides of the crater are collapsing into it. I'm told this is due to volcanic activity and not the rainfall. (It last erupted in the 1960's so it's due for one. Fascinating but quite as picturesque. The walk around the ashfield is nice though.
One last bit of advice. There were a number of coatis in the car park - these are cat size mammals with long anteater style noses. They look cute but have large claws and teeth. Tourists feed them which is why they are there. It doesn't do them good eating junk food and they can get aggressive.
