“We saw the Volcano”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

With the clouds over the Volcano Poas, we were told we would be lucky to see it late in the morning due to the overcast. We saw it for 5 minutes and it was smoking. This was so exciting and worth the long trail walk to the Volcano. My only suggestion as that elderly persons with walking issues this can be a difficult walk up hill. Since this is the dry season we had no problem with rain.

“Awesome to see a live volcano”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2014

We were lucky to come here on a clear day, so we had beautiful views of the volcano and crater lake. It is a short walk to the crater from the visitor center. There is also a 1 hour nature trail with explanation of the flora that passes by the crater lake. The trail loops back to the entrance. Well worth the walk. The elevation is at about 2500 m, so take your time to walk it.

This park has a very nice visitor's center and shop. If you are going to buy souvenirs - do is here so your money goes to the National Park service.

“You gotta be lucky....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2014

We went to this attraction on a day that ended up being cloudy. We drove from San Jose. The drive is about 1.5 hours at a leisurely pace. We left early in the morning as you have a better chance of seeing the crater. We were not lucky. I would post pictures, but if you look up in the sky on a cloudy day - my pictures would show the same thing. The facility was great, plenty of parking for my car, and the path is actually a paved road, so easy for anyone. There was a secondary hiking trail to the lagoon which was cool, and the view much the same (cloudy). We saw pictures of others who managed to go on a clear day, and their view was amazing. Apparently only 7% of visitors get to see the crater. If you are one of them consider yourself lucky. Bring a jacket - it's quite cold.

“Please read for proper perspective”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2014 via mobile

I'm amazed at the whiners and complainers who have shared that this is less than an average rating. you have no sense of adventure and are obviously high maintenance.

It's a volcano people, and it's outdoors, and its a high altitude so, yes, there are lots of variables that could impact your visit and view - that's Mother Nature. BUT there's so much to do, see and experience between the Volcano and the city.

We drove up on a Wednesday afternoon around 3pm. There were about 15 people in the viewing area. So maybe mid afternoon has something to do with crowd size. Yes, it was foggy at first - though it was a beautifully sunny day - but we waited for about 45 minutes and got a break! The fog cleared, and the view was awesome. it lasted about 30 minutes before the billowing cloud from the volcano obscured our vision. Time to go. :)

The trip up and the trip down have so many pull offs where you can see incredible scenic views of the mountainsides, coffee plantations, villages, etc. It's very picturesque...AND it's usually very sunny!! there's a few local roadside gift shops with bracelets, necklaces, paintings and knick-knacks made by the locals, and even a few restaurants like El Churrasco. It a nice little diner with very good food.

So take in the entire experience and you won't feel like it's been a total waste if you can't see the crater.

“Incredible Sight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2014

We were fortunate to visit Poas Volcano and be able to see the crater. On the day we went there was a beautiful blue sky and very few clouds. It is my understanding that not everyone is so lucky as many days result in clouds covering the crater. The view is magnificent and it is worth the effort to drive there and then walk up to the crater area. It can be chilly there so be sure to bring a sweater or jacket. There is a small restaurant and gift shop as well as bathroom facilities at the entrance. We would highly recommend going to Poas Volcano, but try to check the weather before you leave so you are not disappointed.
