“The best volcano experience in Costa Rica”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2014

I am currently on a 5 day trip beginning with Arenal Volcano, then Poas Volcano, then Turrialba and finally back to Irazu. Arenal is the most beautiful volcano...especially if you stay at the Volcano Observatory Lodge which is on the side where the most recent lava flows occurred, yet the Poas overlook and the nearby lake which is in an extinct crater of Poas make it the best value if you have time for only 1 volcano experience. The Hotel Altura is only 5 minutes from the summit which makes an ideal beginning each morning because there is no struggle to get there. Make sure you get to Poas as soon as it opens around 8 AM...the sky is usually clear and the many tour buses have not arrived. By 10:30 the place is an ant hill. They have a nice restaurant with snack food and good coffee, hot chocolate (make sure you get choco/leche) and expresso.

This is one of the best value attractions in Costa Rica because the $10 admission per person and $3 parking is very reasonable for the unique quality of the attraction.

“Must see”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2014

It took awhile for the clouds to blow away so you could see the crater but it did and I got to see and hear a small explosion inside. I missed it on video but was well worth the trip.

“Great day trip from San Jose”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2014

Unique environment, good trails, great views into the crater if it isn't cloudy. Close to San Jose. Lots of birdlife and interesting vegetation, but don't try swimming in the crystal clear lake as it has a high acid content, might dissolve your skin as well as your bathing suit!

“Beware the weather......white-out!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2014

Poas made for a nice spot of fresh air and a leg stretch, but that was about it. Arriving at about 10am, from memory, meant it was already very crowded (with Ticos, it was a Sunday) and when we got to both the crater and lagoon both were covered in a thick blanket of white cloud and you couldn't see a thing.

Worth doing as 'part' of a day trip, but wouldn't bother in isolation.

“A Taste of Costa Rica”

Make sure to bring a jacket when you visit Poas. The temperature is in the upper 50s even though it is 80 in San Jose.
