“Great if you're visiting on a clear day”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

Costa Rica #1 tourist attraction. That means crowds of tourists. That's why I did prefer the Irazu volcano. But Poas is really nice too. There are a few nice trails, and during a clear day both the crater and the lagoon are just stunning!

“excellent experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

It was so good to visit last month the beautiful Poas Volaco, the trip to the park is just georgeous beutiful mountains , the climate, made this experience marvelous, we were so lucky to get to see the crater , there was not even a cloud near! My children enjoyed the little hiking tree to the lagoon, and then later we had the oportunity to eat at Fresa´s restaurant ,nice people and the food delicious.

“Interesting Volcano”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

The trip to view the crater was an easy walk from the parking lot. Take a warm jacket! The wind chill made us a little uncomfortable, but the 15 minute uphill walk to the lake above the crater fixed that! Beautiful views!

This site is relatively quick and can easily be combined with another attraction. We went to the Doka Coffee Plantation afterwards for lunch, a tour of the coffee works, and the butterfly garden.

“Old Volcano Sights”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

A visit to Poaz Volcano should be done early in the morning because sulphur clouds obscure the crater later in the day. There is a short walk from the parking area to the observation area to see the crater. You stand about 700 Feet above the rim and can watch the smoke billowing from the center. There s a second crater about a half mile strenuous walk but it is completely filled with water. On site are a small museum, restaurant and gift store. The drive from San Jose takes about one hour. The volcano park is worth a visit if you're in the area.

“Get here early or you'll probably only see fog”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

The Poas Volcano is supposed to be quite spectacular. I am unable to verify this. I arrived at 10:00am and the crater was entirely filled with fog. According to the locals, your chances of actually seeing into the crater range from 25%-33%. Your chances of actually seeing anything improve if you arrive first thing in the morning before the fog regularly settles in. Be prepared to walk .5 mile on a fairly steep incline to reach the crater. Also remember to pace yourself since you are at a higher elevation.
