“Always worth the drive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012

We live in Costa Rica, and have been to Poas at least a dozen times. It is always worth the drive. Sure, some times you may have to wait up to an hour for the clouds to clear so you can look down into the crater, but every time it is worth it. Don't visit Costa Rica without making a trip to Poas.

“Wow!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

How many places are there where you can actually see into a volcano?! The Poas Volcano is very easily accessible -- a short drive from the local hotels (and also driveable from San Jose). There's the standard entrance fee to the park, and a $3 parking fee. Then you walk about 10 minutes to the viewing area -- right at the mouth of the volcano. It's true what they say: even if it's covered in clouds, be patient, and the clouds will lift and you'll get to see the azure lake inside. There's no reason to spend more than 15-30 minutes here, but it's definitely worth a visit.

“Tough to catch a view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

The park is really well built but we never got to see the crater. Nice facilities & easy access. There is a restaurant at the vistors center, and the displays are informational. There are in Spanish and English.

“breathless”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

Many times I´ve driven up to the top (almost) of Volcan Poas, and then walked to the viewing area where you can look down, breathlessly, into one of the largest volcanic craters in the world. Early in the day is the best time as clouds often tend to sweep in later. Tourist resources in the official building include scientific explanations of volcanic behaviour, and souvenir photos etc. It will be ten degrees cooler at the summit than in the cities of the central plateau, so dress accordingly. And wear walking shoes!

“Only the weather did not cooperate”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

In between the clouds was a great view of the crater and lake. the hiking trail was entirely paved, though it could still be a challenge to some, due to elevation, steepness, slipperiness.
