“Perfect for our honeymoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2014

Nayara is simply phenomenal. Every single member of the staff we met was incredibly polite and helpful. The food at the restaurants was amazing as was the waitstaff. I mentioned a food allergy during our first meal and the waitstaff remembered for the remainder of our stay and ensured I didn't get anything (even during buffet breakfasts) that would have been an issue. The grounds are simply beautiful and fantastically maintained. This was the perfect resort for us to begin our honeymoon.

Room Tip: The Villas are pricey but provide an extra level of tranquility, relaxation, and isolation we were l...

My husband and I stayed at Nayara for our honey moon and we loved this place. The rooms, the gardens, all the facilities are amazing! the service excellent, the food delicious. It's by far the best hotel we have stayed on.

Can't find one even slightly critical thing to say. This place is crazy amazing. As I sit here finishing one of the best dinners I've ever eaten. The guitar plays softly in the background, the candles flickers and the moon rises. The room is better than can be had in the US. The spa is beyond compare. You need to come here NOW!!

My husband and I stayed at Nayara for about a week in December and absolutely loved it. The reviews that we read on Tripadvisor were very accurate, so we figured we would share some tips that we gathered over our experience. I will warn you this will be pretty long.

Traveling: We landed in Liberia airport, which is a good 2-3 hour car ride away. We opted for the hotel transportation and we very glad that we did. We were met by the driver in baggage claim and were very pleased with the van which had A/C and water waiting for us. We did ask the driver to stop at a corner store on our way to the hotel. We were able to pick up drinks, snacks and beer. I would recommend stopping on your back to the airport if you are leaving from the hotel to pick up coffee (much cheaper than at the hotel) and Costa Rican snacks and sauces for cheap souvenirs. The ride is also just as bumpy as everyone has previously stated. If you get car sick at all, pop a motion sickness pill when you start your drive.

The Hotel: The hotel is beautiful, and honestly, looks just like the pictures. We stayed in the Nayara suite and it was amazing. The view from our balcony was amazing and it seemed like most rooms have similar views. The outdoor shower was great and had amazing water temperature and pressure. The minibar is very reasonably priced for beer ($2.75) and bottles of wine are around $38. Cookies and chips range from $0.50 to a few dollars. The grounds were beautiful but a bit hilly and can be slick after it rains. There are always people offering your rides in a golf cart if you need it. The pool is nice, although small and the pool bar staff is some of the best. Try the frozen drinks; most are made with real fruit.

Food: The food was amazing. The main restaurant was delicious. We really enjoyed the food; but steak night wasn’t our favorite (we enjoyed the local food better). Breakfast was the best meal of the day and had the most amazing fresh fruit selection, as well as a trio of fresh juices to choose from daily. As noted in other reviews, sandwiches are provided at breakfast for you to take for lunch. When we were there, these sandwiches were the same all 6 days (ham or veggie) but were decent for a free lunch when paired with the granola bars. Dinner at sushi amore was great, and I highly recommend people take advantage of happy hour’s 2-for-1 drinks. We were there alone during happy hour most days. The wine bar is nice and had a good wine selection. They also have ipads, scrabble and another board game, which was nice for pre-dinner drinks. We would also totally recommend the romantic private dinner. The food is amazing and having your own private gazebo, waitress ad chef makes for a very romantic evening.

Activities: We tried many of the activities offered by the hotel and would recommend each one.

Sky Tram and Trek was great. Transportation was easy and the site has lockers for your personal belongings that you don’t want to bring with you. There is also a bar/restaurant and souvenir store on site. There are 2 small practice lines so if you decide that it’s not for you, you don’t have to continue on. Bring sunglasses in case it rains to protect your eyes while ziplining.

Canyoning – This tour was also fun. Note that it is tourism canyoning, so you are 100% safe and most of the work is done by the guides. If you have any experience repelling, you may have an issue with not really being in control of your own line. It was a fun time and the meal after the tour was amazing plus the coffee and cookies. You will be able to purchase a DVD of all of the photos for the day at the end for around $30.

Cerro Chato-This was our favorite activity and we would really recommend going with a guide. The guide will show you things you would have otherwise missed. You also are able to go up one path and down another since you don’t have to return to your car. We would also recommend hiking boots, especially if it’s muddy. We saw some people in sneakers having a rough time. This is not an easy hike, but if you go slow it is manageable. It also may not be the best for people with knee or back problems.

Eco Thermales was very nice. We booked this through the hotel and they provided us cab service to and from the hot springs, which are only a few minutes away. We did the morning shift and had the place to ourselves for the first 45 minutes or so. It was nice after a day of hiking but got a bit more crowded as the day went on.

Hanging Bridges- Another one of our favorites. It takes about 3 hours and is about 3 miles of an up-hill walk. This is your best chance to see wildlife and get a bit of exercise. It’s a great tour if you love photography. It is not the best for young children since it’s long and sometimes requires patience and silence to find and not disturb wildlife.

Kayaking on Arenal lake- A somewhat informative and beautifully peaceful tour. It takes a few hours and there is a nice stop with water and fruit.

The only negative thing that I have to say about the resort is the confusion over the romance package. We booked the package, which is normally 3 nights, and extended it for an additional 3 nights. The package included breakfast and dinner, and I was under the impression that the package extension would cover these meals as well (since I extended at the package and not just the room rate). Upon check in, we were told that we only had the original 2 night’s dinner included. We were disappointed but figured we misunderstood. We decided to save the included meals for the last nights. The first few nights we paid for our meals out of pocket. Many servers expressed that they thought that we had all of our meals included, but when they checked with the front desk, they told them the same thing (2 different times). Two days before we left, we were then told that all of our meals had been included. So, we ended up paying for a few meals… twice… We were not offered any reimbursement, maybe since we had paid cash; however, we didn’t really have time to press the issue. We were more upset that we missed a few delicious 3 course meals. The hotel really needs to work out the confusion associated with package extensions.

Overall, we loved our trip and would love to come back and check out the new portion of the hotel!

Room Tip: Room 40 has an amazing view

We stayed two nights at the Nayara in late January and were in awe of this property. It is like you are in the rain forest. The property is beautifully landscaped and a pleasure to walk around in and explore. We were with two other couples and we all had Casitas with a volcano view. We were lucky enough to get one day where we could see the volcano. The outdoor porch with a jacuzzi was wonderful as was the outdoor shower. The bed was very comfortable and the room spacious. The on site restaurant has a delicious breakfast buffet each morning that is included in the room price. The staff are professional and go out of their way to be helpful. A special thanks to Wesley who was just wonderful in helping us and answering a variety of questions. It is no wonder this is a top rated hotel. It is not to be missed if you are staying in the La Fortuna area.

Room Tip: Go for the Casitas as an upgrade to the basic room. Ask for a volcano view.

We are so glad we were able to book a"Casita deluxe " in this dream hotel!
We stayed 3 nights at the end of january.
The welcome we got upon arriving here in our small 4*'4 car was overwhelming. The staff would have done anything to make us feel at home.
The casita offered a balcony with exquisite direct views of the dormant but so beautiful volcano arenal. We could have stared all day at the views! The inside of the casita was stunning too: four posted bed, inside and outside shower (do not hesitate to shower outside, it is wonderfull), plenty of cupboards and on the balcony a jacuzzi bath for two with the volcano in front of your eyes…
The property itself is used in such a way that every casita seems to be secluded, no noise except from airco exhaust, forest in front of the balcony, birds, flowers all around.
The original swimming pool is rather small but the hotel recently opened new suites on a steep hill were you find another pool where you can swim laps.
Don't miss the sushi bar! Strange in this environment but very nice!

Amazing resort. Went for honeymoon (this place is ideal for couples) not so much for just friends hanging out or families. We signed up for a package deal through the hotel "discover the best of" included breakfast and dinnner everyday, 1-5 course wine dinner, couples massage, zip line, hanging bridges and hot springs along w/ our room. My pictures look like postcards, every patio has a view of the volcano. Saw a lot of wildlife i.e. various birds, monkeys, sloths, snakes, some animal related to the racoon, etc. The least favorite thing i did was the hot springs, would of rather of hiked the volcano or gone horseback riding. They have mult restaurants to choose from on site and la fortuna is a short ride if you want to take a cab (not much to see there though) This place hasn't been rated as one of the top resorts in the world for no reason, it's really beautiful and staff is great.

Room Tip: All rooms are basically private cabins w/ a view of volcano so i don't think it really matters w...
