“Very nice place in good location.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2010

This hotel set an "equator" of our trip in all means. The trip was planned from highly active with stops at eco-lodges on the Caribbean side - to tranquil with some beach time at the pacific resort. I would say this is the perfect place to set the base if you want to explore Arenal area, especially if you driving. Location wise I would divide Arenal area into 2 parts: where you can and can not see lava flows. So from Casa Luna you have a great view of volcano and can see eruptions but will not see lava. But you are right next to the waterfall, within walking distance from La Fortuna (~25 min walk) and withing short drive from some active attractions like canyoning with Desafio company. It is about 24km drive from the lake Arenal - great spot to see lava flows and hanging bridges park and about 7-8 km from hot springs (it is on the way to the lake). Some local people recommended to use the place across the street from fancy Baldi springs resort. There is ton of other attractions in the area.
The hotel itself made a very pleasant impression. Nicely decorated, quiet. The pool faces the volcano and you can hear its rumblings about every 2 hours. You can see the eruption in the clear sky. Very reasonably priced restaurant (as I found out later on the trip) has a good menu, I'd go for the fish though. I would say you can it 3 course for $30-$40. This is the only place on our trip that had stable hot water. Elsewhere you got all cold or all hot or unable to mix it to the desired temperature - here we were happy. There is a free laptop with internet to use @ the counter. Our room had TV, condition that we never used and fridge. Staff speaks english. There is a parking area which I believe is free. I found all prices to be in US$. And you loose money if you pay in colones due to a higher rate at least that was a stable trend for us up to the point when we got to the pacific side where all was vice versa and extremely expensive.

Bottom line - I would recommend this place to anyone. This seems to be a good place to stay whole week and get the most out of the area or stay just 1-2 nights before the next hop.

p.s. we were offered a taxi for $20 to go check the eruption in the evening from the lake side. I heard one of the best places to see eruption is Arenal volcano lodge.

Walking in La Fortuna appears to be safe. I heard the same from both guides and local people. What a great characters can be met here :)

After all the great reviews here we were excited to book 2 rooms here months ago. We provided credit card information to secure the room. Then, less than a week before we were scheduled to arrive, we received an email that they had overbooked and had no rooms for us. They said they had made reservations for us at a different hotel. We had no choice in the matter. As a result, we had to contact the new hotel to ensure we had a reservation and re-book numerous activities for which we had scheduled pick up from Casa Luna. I immediately emailed Casa Luna to ask questions about the change and never heard back from them. What is the point of making a reservation if it means nothing? This place may be great if your reservation is honored. But I would prefer the security of knowing my reservation actually means I will have a room when I arrive in Costa Rica.

It is a shame that this problems happened with this client , because we did have a problem and it was necessary to change her reservation to another hotel , but it is not true that we didn’t offer any help necessary for changing the reservation and the client denied any help for us in several occasions , so we think it is a bit rude to put a bad calcification to our hotel , if she never stayed there.

The rooms, location, pool/garden area, and food quality (dinner menu and free breakfast) were excellent. Even the housekeeper was friendly, and her elephant towel sculptures were a joy. The morning/early afternoon front desk was also helpful and friendly. However, there are some glaring service problems that need to be addressed if Casa Luna wants to achieve the level of excellence that its general look suggests. First, the restaurant made errors in our orders; second, the breakfast host nearly bit our heads off when we had the audacity to move the same two tables together that we had done twice already for the previous breakfast and dinner; finally, and most importantly, the young lady at the front desk for the afternoon/evening shift marred our entire stay. All eight in our group are experienced, self-directed world travelers, often staying at middle-of-the road, locally-owned hotels, so we are not holding her to a Four Seasons standard. Every simple request was met with an attitude that showed a clear preference for staying on Facebook rather than getting up to help her guests. We were not asking anything out of the ordinary – just simple directions and questions about area attractions – but each time we were met with everything but an eye roll. We sincerely enjoyed so much about this hotel that we hope the managers address these issues quickly, because we would like to recommend this hotel to others.

Ok there were only 2 "negatives" so will get them out of the way. We stayed in the D block so wireless internet did not work in our room and barely worked on our porch. Was perfect in the restraunt. Other negative is they need a hot tub. The grounds are lush and tropical. The pool was clean with great view of the volcano. We did the couples massage and the treatment was great. You could hear the volcano erupt during the massage. That was unique! The restraunt had a good breakfast. We had some of the best grilled tuna ever for only $9 for supper. The front desk and staff were very friendly. When we got in the pool the groundskeeper came over and turned on the waterfall. The hotel was built in 2006 but is so well kept it looks brand new. Our room was immaculate with a covered balcony looking towards the volcano. Do get an upper room if you are able to climb stairs so you have this view unobstructed. If you want something within walking distance to town this is not the place but if you want awesome food, service, spa and room we highly recommend this hotel! We did only stay one night as we were in town just to see the volcano.

We stayed at Casa Luna one night in between Selva Verde and Monteverde. Wished we had experienced it mote. The place overall is very well sculpted and the rooms are wonderful. We loved having a respite of a/c for the one night.

When we arrived, I was so happy to be somewhere comfy and quiet. The only problem is that they are currently redoing the road into the place and it gets interesting getting in and out. Upon the check in I found out that I could get a massage that night. After two days of hiking, it was a welcome respite. The therapist was very good and the spa I recommend if you need the pick me up.

We were there at the same time as a high school group but the restaurant found it very easy to accomodate us regardless. The food was very good and reasonably priced. The breakfast was just as well prepared.

Make sure if you stay here to get a room on the second floor for the best views of the volcano. We were lucky enough to watch the small eruption from the balcony the afternoon we were there.

We selected Casa Luna from previous Tripadvisor.com reviews, and were not disappointed. Beautiful grounds, with many exotic flowers, and a trail that led down to a gurgling creek.

We liked the room setup, four units per building, separated by the stairway, so no rooms shared a common wall. Great view of the volcano from our second floor balcony, and we had several clear moments when we could actually see the entire volcano. Comfy beds, good AC, attractive stucco walls and nice wooden furniture.

Saw lots of wildlife on the grounds, including what looked like an eyelash viper eating a frog! Walked the grounds at night with flashlights to see tree frogs, many hummingbirds during the daytime.

Breakfast is included, featured fresh fruit plate, then omelettes, french toast, tipical, etc.

Staff was great, from front desk to restaurant staff.

Warning: the previously terrible road is being renovated, portions are just one lane, which can be tricky at night when someone is coming the other way.

This a very nice hotel. All the rooms (both standard and deluxe) have a view to the Arenal Volcano.
Breakfast was good. I also have the chance to have lunch there and the service was excellent.
People at the reception desk are very friendly and willing to help you. I hire with them a combinated tour and it was amazing!
I recommend this hotel!!
