“A very comfortable place with fantastic service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2009

We were looking for a nice and comfortable place to wind down with the kids for a few days after being on the road for while, and really found the perfect spot at Casa Luna! Spacious and clean rooms, a very good restaurant with decent prices and a very nice swimmingpool, all in a beautiful and relaxing setting that both we and the kids loved.

We went on several activities that the hotel recommended/arranged while we were there, they were all very well organized and great fun for both adults and kids (age 7 + 9). We especially enjoyed horseriding on the volcano (Don Tobias) and the white-water rafting (level 2-3, they won't let you do that with kids back home :-) )

The girls at the front desk were super-friendly and really went out of their way to help us arrange whatever we asked for, including taxi-tours to nearby attractions (to see the lava blow at night ++). They also arranged transfer and a tour for our next destination at Tortuguero, and even gave us a doggy-bag with breakfast due to very early departure.

No doubt where we will stay if we ever come back!

Out of the 5 hotels that we stayed in in Costa Rica, this was the best! So accomodating with the English speaking help and beautiful. It was my sons, 15 & 17 years old, favorite hotel in Costa Rica. Did the extreme adrenaline package, level 3 & 4 white water rafting, kayaking, rain forest tour & saw sloths, monkeys, lizards, toucans, frogs, etc, zip-lining, hot springs, spent the day at one of the Pacific beaches, saw lots of coffee-banana-yucca, pineapple, etc farms.....

Just got back from our trip and wanted to leave a note. This place was great; it really should call itself a resort. The rooms and grounds were beautiful, very new, clean and modern. The shower and bathroom was amazing and each room has its own roomy balcony with chairs. The beds were also great. My only complaint was the A/C. It really didn’t do much to keep the room cool. IT was a bnit musty when we checked in, but I think the room had been empty a while and they certainly don’t run the A/C when no one is there. The restaurant was ok but pretty overpriced. The included breakfast was great. This place certainly caters to Americans. The pool was nice and the few staff we interacted with was friendly/helpful. They certainly push the excursions, and from what I hear they were fun, but they were very expensive. We had a car, so we went everywhere by ourselves. The hotel is just on the outside of town, on the edge of walking distance. It would have been quite a trek to walk to town and back. We drove to the Arenal volcano and did the hike ourselves to save the $43/person cost of doing it with the tour bus and had an amazing time. I don’t know what they charged for the waterfall tour, but we walked there (it is a very challenging hilly hike). Plus we did all our excursions on our own schedule. Having a car here will save you tons of money and time.

I am very picky about bathrooms and bedrooms. We had stayed one night at Tabacon, which was amazing, but was also really expensive. We were looking for a hotel that was cheaper but had nice facilities. We were visiting La Fortuna waterfall when we saw this hotel. We payed $77 for the night, and it included breakfast. The bathroom was really nice, clean and modern. The bedroom was nice...nothing out of this world, but it was cozy and clean. We had a rental car, which helped as the hotel it's not on a main road. The views of the volcano are amazing, yet it is located on the side that is not active. Driving to La Fortuna only took 6mins. Very quiet...we had a room on a second floor which had a little balcony...me and wife...spent the night chatting, drinking champagne, and looking over at the volcano! The only thing it didn't have was a phone at the bedroom, weird, right? We forgot to ask why!

Honestly, my husband and I weren't crazy about staying here because we read that that this hotel is not on the active side of the volcano ( http://www.arenal.net/arenal-costa-rica-map.htm) and not very known, but we were traveling with our friends and this was their first choice and we realized that there was no guarantee that we'd see the volcano and/or lava. Absolutely no regrets. We had a car and the hotel was fairly close to all the attractions. Service was amazing, delicious and generous portioned breakfast included in reasonably priced stay (call to get a better deal especially during low season), rooms were clean and beautifully decorative, and the architecture was so nice. When not covered by clouds, the volcano view from our balcony (2nd floor) was so incredible. The restaurant food was delicious too and reasonably priced. Bottom-line: nothing bad that I can say about this hotel except that I thought it was wierd that they don't have safes in the room and they offer to store things for you a the reception desk...they put away for you in an envelope vs. you putting into safe.

Additional suggestions:

-If you like to walk, you can easily walk to the waterfall (keep in mind that the waterfall park has about 400 steps going down/up).
-Shop around for your tours. Find out how much tours cost and then negotiate especially if you have car since you don't necessarily need transportation.

The road to the Casa Luna Lodge is a narrow, curvy, and bumpy. It is about a 10 minute drive from the main downtown area with shops and restaurants.

The hotel and grounds are beautiful! We had a second floor room (no elevators) with an amazing view of the volcano from our balcony. There was a TV, mini fridge, and air conditioner in the room.

There was a pool and hot tub, but we did not have time to get in either.

We ate breakfast and dinner at the hotel both nights. We were given a menu with several choices for both meals. I had the steak one night and the fish the other. Both were great.

What a great place to stay - probably the best hotel we had in Costa Rica!
Excellent rooms with AC, great breakfast, nice pool, friendly staff, very clean.
You need a car to get around but I guess almost everybody who comes to La Fortuna comes by car. We can only recommend this hotel and would always go back here.
